In Zach Cregger’s 2025 horror-thriller Weapons, the children do not simply sneak out: all but one child from the same class vanish from their homes at exactly 2:17 a.m. The phrase “the kids come out at night” is a useful description of the film’s eerie premise, not a verified official tagline or line of dialogue.
What happens in Weapons?
Warner Bros.’ official description sets the story in motion with a mass disappearance: every child in a class except one mysteriously vanishes at 2:17 a.m. The unexplained event leaves the community asking who—or what—could be responsible. The official synopsis keeps the cause of the disappearances under wraps.
The Associated Press identifies Maybrook, the fictional town where the story unfolds, as being in Illinois. The ensemble includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan.
Why do the children leave at 2:17 a.m.?
Spoilers ahead: The question of why the children disappear is central to the film’s mystery. The official synopsis does not reveal the answer. In a 2025 interview with TheWrap, writer-director Zach Cregger discussed Gladys and the film’s dream imagery, and said the story can be read straightforwardly as a witch stealing children while leaving room for viewers to form their own interpretations. That is the director’s framing; it is not a reason to treat every symbolic reading as confirmed meaning.

Is Weapons horror or dark comedy?
It is a horror-thriller that makes room for humor without abandoning its unsettling premise. Cregger told the Associated Press that humor works when it comes from a character’s authentic reaction. Josh Brolin, discussing how he approached grief, put the performance challenge this way: “You’re not playing for the laugh, otherwise you lose the laugh.” The humor grows from how people respond to the crisis, rather than turning the film into a straightforward comedy.
