Hummingbird Colors: Which Flowers Attract Them—and Which Avoidance Claims Fail

Red, orange, and pink are sensible colors for a hummingbird garden, but no study establishes a universal list of five colors hummingbirds love or two they categorically avoid. Hummingbirds visit flowers in many colors. Color can help a bird notice a planting, yet nectar reward, tubular shape, plant suitability, and a steady supply of blooms matter at least as much.

The often-repeated “two colors they avoid” claim comes from one study of one natural monkeyflower population. Its result cannot be applied to every hummingbird species, flower, or garden. Treat the assigned list as a gardening prompt, not a biological rule.

Which flower colors are useful for attracting hummingbirds?

Extension guidance from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) and Illinois Extension consistently supports using red, orange, and pink flowers. Those colors are practical visual signals, not an exclusive menu. Hummingbirds also visit purple, white, and other flowers when the plants provide accessible nectar.

Color or group What the evidence supports How to use it in a garden
Red A conventional, useful choice; hummingbirds can learn that a red flower offers food. Artificial-flower tests did not establish an innate red preference. Include red tubular flowers, but do not make red your only planting criterion.
Orange Recommended by extension guidance. A natural Mimulus aurantiacus population received more visits to orange flowers than their frequency would predict. Use orange as one component of a mixed-color bed.
Pink Recommended by UF/IFAS and Illinois Extension as a useful hummingbird-garden color. Combine pink blooms with other nectar plants that fit local conditions.
Purple, white, and other colors Hummingbirds are documented visiting flowers in colors beyond red, orange, and pink. A community study found hummingbird-associated signals reflected long wavelengths, but it did not define a preferred garden palette. Keep suitable non-red plants when they offer nectar and bloom at useful times.
Yellow Two yellowest classes were visited less often in one particular monkeyflower population. That is not evidence of universal dislike. Do not remove a well-adapted yellow nectar plant solely because it is yellow.

There is therefore no defensible fifth “loved” color that can be ranked from the available findings. The studies describe particular flowers, populations, and test conditions rather than a universal hummingbird color scale.

Why color preference is not a simple rule

Artificial flowers produced no single winner

A 2011 Journal of Experimental Biology study tested hummingbirds with artificial flowers and reported no preference among the colors used in those experiments. Its abstract also noted that earlier preference tests had not demonstrated an innate preference for red and that hummingbird-pollinated white flowers occur in nature.

This matters because observations at a red feeder or red artificial flower can be misread. A bird may learn that a conspicuous object reliably supplies sugar water, then return to that object because of its reward history. That learned association is different from being born with a fixed red preference. Artificial-flower results also cannot predict how a bird responds to every natural flower, whose shape, scent, nectar volume, surrounding foliage, and position differ.

A natural monkeyflower population showed mixed responses

A study first published in 2012 examined a natural hybrid population of Mimulus aurantiacus. In that population, flower color classes differed in visitation: hummingbirds visited orange flowers more often than expected from their frequency, visited the two reddest classes in proportion to their availability, and visited the two most yellow classes less often.

The same study found no correlation between flower color and flower size or nectar measures in that population. Its pattern is consequently a population-level observation, not a universal ranking. A hummingbird in another habitat may encounter different species, nectar rewards, competitors, light conditions, and learned associations. The authors also discussed a distinction between feeder studies, which generally failed to show a red preference, and flower studies that found preference for red pigments under their own test conditions. Those findings are not interchangeable.

Community research concerns signal evolution, not an avoid list

A 2018 community-level study reported that hummingbird-associated flower signals were less conspicuous to bees and reflected long wavelengths. That result is consistent with a possible role for pollinator interactions in floral evolution: a flower may be more visible to hummingbirds while less attractive to some insects. It does not identify two colors that hummingbirds avoid, nor does it tell a gardener to eliminate yellow, white, or purple flowers.

What matters more than color when choosing plants

Nectar access and tubular shape

UF/IFAS recommends bright, tubular flowers. Tubes commonly hold nectar at their base, where a hummingbird’s long bill and extensible tongue can reach it. A color that looks ideal is of little use if a plant produces little nectar, has a flower shape a local hummingbird cannot exploit, or blooms only briefly.

When comparing plants, check the actual species rather than relying on a color label. Consider whether the plant is adapted to your soil, winter temperatures, moisture, and sunlight; whether it is native or otherwise appropriate in your region; and whether its flowers remain usable during the period hummingbirds are present.

Bloom continuity through the season

A garden with one spectacular week of red flowers can be less useful than a quieter bed that supplies nectar over many weeks. Select several species with overlapping bloom periods. UF/IFAS lists coral honeysuckle and cardinal flower among hummingbird-garden choices, but local growing conditions should determine whether either belongs in your planting.

Map your expected hummingbird season and note when each plant begins and ends flowering. Add early, middle-season, and late-season sources rather than buying every plant for the same bloom date. This approach also reduces the temptation to treat one color as a guaranteed attractant.

Local suitability and maintenance

Choose plants that can thrive without excessive irrigation, fertilizer, or pesticide use in your setting. A locally suitable plant that flowers reliably is generally more valuable than a fashionable color that struggles. Check regional extension or botanical guidance for invasiveness, hardiness, mature size, and pruning needs before planting.

Use color as a visibility cue, not a guarantee

Red, orange, and pink can make a planting easy for a passing bird to notice, so they are reasonable starting points. Place them where flowers are visible from open flight paths and where foliage does not hide the blooms. Then add other colors that meet the nectar and timing requirements. Color can improve visibility while the plant’s reward determines whether a hummingbird returns.

Should you avoid yellow flowers?

No. The yellow finding is narrower than the headline suggests. In the Mimulus aurantiacus population, the two most yellow classes received fewer visits under that study’s conditions. It does not show that hummingbirds universally reject yellow flowers, and extension guidance explicitly notes that hummingbirds feed from flowers in other colors.

Keep a yellow plant if it is nectar-rich, suited to your region, and flowering when birds need food. If you want to test its usefulness, observe visits over several weeks while recording bloom abundance and weather. A quiet day does not prove avoidance; the plant may be competing with a more rewarding bloom nearby, flowering outside the main migration period, or offering flowers that are difficult to reach.

Do hummingbird feeders need to be red?

A feeder is optional support, not a substitute for a nectar-plant plan. UF/IFAS describes feeders as supplements to flowering plants. The color studies do not show that a feeder must be red. A bird may investigate a conspicuous feeder, but dependable nectar, clean equipment, and a safe location determine whether it remains useful.

If you use a feeder, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and nectar-replacement directions, keep it where cats and other predators cannot ambush birds, and continue providing flowers. Do not remove natural nectar sources on the assumption that feeder color solves the attraction problem.

How to build a color-balanced hummingbird garden

  1. List the local constraints. Record your hardiness conditions, sunlight, soil drainage, available water, and the months when hummingbirds occur in your area.
  2. Choose a structural mix. Start with several nectar-rich, tubular species that are locally appropriate. Include red, orange, or pink where those plants perform well, then add suitable flowers in other colors.
  3. Plan overlapping bloom dates. Arrange early-, mid-, and late-season plants so that one species does not carry the entire food supply.
  4. Provide safe access. Place flowers in visible pockets with perches or nearby branches, while avoiding locations exposed to pesticides, heavy traffic, or ambush predators.
  5. Evaluate the planting by visits and plant health. Watch which flowers are used, but interpret observations alongside bloom quantity, weather, time of day, and competition. Replace a failing plant because it is unsuitable, not simply because its color is outside a popular list.
  6. Add a feeder only if it helps your situation. Treat it as supplementary equipment and maintain it carefully; it is not required for a color-effective garden.

Common mistakes in color-based hummingbird advice

  • Calling red an instinctive requirement. The 2011 artificial-flower experiment found no preference among its tested colors, and learned food associations can explain repeated visits.
  • Turning one monkeyflower result into a universal rule. The yellow and orange visitation pattern came from one natural population of one species complex.
  • Confusing visibility with reward. A conspicuous flower may receive an inspection, but nectar access, quantity, and timing influence continued use.
  • Planting a single-color bed. A narrow palette creates gaps when that color’s plants stop blooming or fail in local conditions.
  • Discarding yellow, white, or purple plants automatically. Hummingbirds visit flowers in these and other colors, so exclusion can remove useful nectar sources.
  • Buying a feeder as a replacement for habitat. Extension guidance treats feeders as supplements to nectar plants, not as proof that a particular feeder color is decisive.

The practical answer to “what colors do hummingbirds like?”

Use red, orange, and pink as easy starting cues, then build around nectar-rich tubular flowers that suit your region and bloom in sequence. Keep productive flowers of other colors, including yellow, unless a plant fails for horticultural reasons. The strongest conclusion from the available studies is not a list of five favorites and two avoided colors; it is that color responses depend on the test, the flower, the population, and the reward.
