1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—but Hulu’s Oscars problems were not one repeated outage. In 2025, some viewers lost access at the start and Hulu’s live feed ended before the ceremony’s final major awards. In 2026, the main complaint was different: some Disney+/Hulu bundle users could see the red carpet but not find the live Oscars in the combined experience. Hulu directed those viewers to the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com.
The two incidents reveal why live events remain harder to deliver than ordinary on-demand shows: authentication, subscription entitlements, app routing, event scheduling, live distribution, and customer support all have to work at the same moment.
Hulu did have a serious Oscars failure in 2025, but the 2026 problem was different. During the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, some viewers had trouble signing in and Hulu’s live feed ended before Best Actress and Best Picture were announced. Disney apologized, and reporting linked the cutoff to an event schedule that did not allow enough time for a ceremony running long.
On March 15, 2026, viewers reported a different kind of breakdown: people using the combined Disney+/Hulu experience could find the red-carpet programming but could not reliably find or access the live ceremony. Hulu support said the live event was available through the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com, while the replay would appear on Disney+. Some users still reported errors and buffering. The available evidence does not establish a platform-wide outage or another premature ending comparable to 2025.

What happened when Hulu streamed the Oscars?
| Date | What viewers experienced | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| March 2, 2025 | Login and access complaints at the start; the stream later displayed an “event has ended” message before the final major awards. | A genuine live-stream and scheduling failure affecting some viewers. Disney apologized. |
| March 15, 2026 | Some bundle users could see the red carpet but not the live ceremony in the combined Disney+/Hulu experience. Others encountered errors or buffering. | A confusing and inconsistent access journey. Hulu directed viewers to the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com. It was not documented as a repeat of the 2025 cutoff. |
2025: Hulu’s first standard-subscriber Oscars stream ended too soon
The 97th Oscars were notable because ABC’s ceremony was streamed on Hulu for the first time for standard Hulu subscribers. The event was meant to give viewers an alternative to watching through a local ABC station or a live-TV distributor.
Some users reported login or access failures early in the broadcast. The more damaging problem came later: Hulu’s feed stopped before the ceremony’s final two major awards. Viewers saw an “event has ended” message even though the broadcast was still underway, and Best Actress and Best Picture had not yet been presented.
Disney acknowledged that some Oscars viewers had been affected by “technical and live stream issues” and apologized. Reporting attributed the premature ending to a scheduling-system error: the programmed end time did not include enough allowance for a live ceremony that ran long. That is an important distinction from a simple internet slowdown. A viewer could have a perfectly good connection and still lose the event because the platform’s event window had been bounded incorrectly.
Hulu subsequently made a replay available. That helped viewers recover the missing content, but it did not restore the central promise of a live broadcast: watching the ending at the same time as everyone else.
The size of the disruption is also easy to overstate. Downdetector recorded tens of thousands of user reports, which shows that the incident generated substantial public frustration. Those reports are not an independently verified count of affected Hulu subscribers, however. They indicate the scale of online complaints rather than a precise outage total.
2026: a bundle and app problem, not a confirmed replay of the cutoff
Before the 98th Oscars, Hulu’s March 6, 2026 viewing guide said that all Hulu subscribers could stream the ceremony live without an additional add-on. It also said the full ceremony would be available on demand afterward.
That promise did not translate into a single, obvious viewing path for everyone. On Oscar night, reporting from TheWrap and TV Answer Man described viewers using the combined Disney+/Hulu experience who could see the red-carpet coverage but could not find or access the live ceremony once the main broadcast began.

Hulu support clarified that the live stream was available through the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com. The replay, meanwhile, was expected to appear on Disney+. That division may have been technically intentional, but it was not clear enough at the moment viewers needed it. People who reasonably assumed that a Hulu subscription inside a combined Disney+/Hulu interface would expose the same live event were sent looking for a program that was not visible in the place they were using.
Some viewers said the standalone-app workaround produced errors, and others reported buffering. At the same time, people who successfully reached the stream were generally more satisfied, aside from occasional playback complaints. The available reporting therefore does not support saying that Hulu universally crashed or that it cut off the ceremony early again.
The most defensible description is an inconsistent product and entitlement experience. The live feed may have been operating for some customers, but the service did not consistently make the event discoverable and accessible through the expected bundle interface.
Why “Hulu crashed again” is too simple
Live video is not one system. It is a chain of services, and an event can fail at any link:
| Layer | What can go wrong | How it appeared in the Oscars incidents |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | The service cannot sign a user in or maintain the session. | Some viewers reported login and access problems at the start of the 2025 broadcast. |
| Entitlement | The account, plan, market, or bundle is not correctly recognized as eligible. | The 2026 confusion centered on which Hulu destination exposed the live event to subscribers. |
| Product routing | The event exists but is surfaced in a different app, website, or content row. | Some Disney+/Hulu users saw the red carpet but not the ceremony and were directed to standalone Hulu or Hulu.com. |
| Event scheduling | The live program is given an incorrect start or end window. | In 2025, the scheduled end did not leave enough room for the ceremony to run long. |
| Live delivery | Encoding, distribution, capacity, ad transitions, or playback systems fail under real-time demand. | Some viewers reported buffering and playback errors in 2026, while the evidence does not prove a universal delivery outage. |
| Communication and support | Users are told to use a path that differs from the one presented in the product. | The 2026 split between the combined experience, standalone Hulu, Hulu.com, and Disney+ replay created a confusing recovery path. |
This is why an on-demand catalog can work normally while a major live event fails. On-demand video can be cached, requested at different times, replayed, and delivered through a relatively forgiving workflow. A live awards show concentrates demand into a narrow window and adds real-time dependencies: account authorization, event metadata, live encoding, distribution, device compatibility, advertising or program transitions, and immediate customer support.
The question is therefore not simply whether Hulu live events are technically possible. It is whether the service can make the event visible to the right account, in the right app, at the right time, and keep the live window open until the program actually ends. The 2025 and 2026 cases also should not be used to blur standard Hulu with Hulu + Live TV. The 2025 Oscars stream was promoted for standard Hulu subscribers, while plan details and event availability can change.
The Oscars are part of a wider live-streaming pattern
Hulu is not the only major streaming company to discover that a famous live event puts different pressure on a platform than an ordinary episode does. The incidents below are comparable in audience frustration, not necessarily in technical cause or severity.
Netflix’s Love Is Blind reunion
Netflix scheduled a live Love Is Blind reunion in April 2023. Technical problems delayed the start by roughly 75 minutes. Netflix ultimately canceled the live presentation and released the episode on demand later that day, while apologizing to viewers.

That was a clear live-event failure, but it was not the same failure as Hulu’s 2025 Oscars cutoff. Netflix’s event was delayed and abandoned as a live presentation; Hulu’s 2025 feed started but ended before the program was finished.
The Jake Paul–Mike Tyson fight
Netflix’s November 15, 2024 Jake Paul–Mike Tyson fight illustrates the pressure created by a global audience. Netflix later said the event reached 65 million concurrent viewers worldwide at its peak. Axios reported more than 500,000 Downdetector issue reports during the fight.
Netflix’s audience figure was company-reported and not independently verified, while Downdetector’s number represents user reports rather than a confirmed count of failed streams. The figures still show why a high-profile fight can generate a much larger wave of complaints than a normal night of television. A platform may deliver a successful event to many people while other viewers experience buffering, login failures, or trouble loading the stream.
Hulu’s 2018 Super Bowl problem
Hulu also has an earlier live-TV example. The Associated Press reported that Hulu’s more expensive live-TV service cut off early for some viewers during the final minutes of the 2018 Super Bowl. Hulu attributed that incident to a technical issue affecting some NBC feeds.

The 2018 incident is useful historical context, but it does not prove that every later Hulu problem has one persistent root cause. It involved a different service configuration, a different broadcaster, and a different technical environment. The stronger conclusion is narrower: live programming has repeatedly exposed failure points that are less visible during ordinary on-demand playback.
What viewers should do when a major live stream fails
For an event such as the Oscars, the most reliable strategy is not to assume that the app’s home screen will tell you everything. Have a second route identified before the ceremony begins.
1. Start with the event owner’s viewing guide
Check the Academy’s official viewing information and the platform’s support account for the current event. The Academy has listed local ABC broadcast availability, Hulu, and other live-TV distributors. This is more useful than relying only on a promotional tile inside an app, especially when a bundle has multiple destinations.
Confirm four details: whether the event is live in your country, whether your plan qualifies, which app or website carries the live feed, and where the replay will appear. Do not assume that the place offering the replay is also the place offering the live broadcast.

2. Try the standalone service when a bundle interface is missing the event
The 2026 Oscars experience provides a specific lesson: if the combined Disney+/Hulu interface shows related programming but not the ceremony, open the standalone Hulu app or go to Hulu.com. Sign in with the account that holds the subscription, then search for the event rather than relying only on the home page.
This is not a guarantee that the workaround will succeed. Some users reported errors even after trying the standalone destination. It is simply the most relevant first step when the problem appears to be product routing rather than a total service outage.
3. Use local ABC as the most independent fallback
Where available, a local ABC broadcast is the fallback least dependent on Hulu’s app, account entitlement, and streaming delivery. The Academy has described the Oscars as available free over the air through a local ABC station, but local affiliate availability varies by market.
Practical broadcast backup
An indoor HDTV antenna may be useful for receiving a local ABC affiliate without relying on an internet stream. It is not a universal solution: reception depends on the station, distance, buildings, terrain, antenna placement, and local signal conditions. If a television has recently lost or changed channels, use its channel-scan or rescan function. FCC consumer guidance notes that frequency changes can make rescanning necessary.

4. Consider another live-TV distributor only after checking local coverage
If local broadcast reception is not practical, an alternative to Hulu for ABC may be available through a live-TV distributor such as YouTube TV or FuboTV. The Academy has listed alternate distributors, but local-channel coverage, pricing, free-trial rules, device support, and terms vary by market and can change. A service that carries ABC in one ZIP code may not carry the local affiliate in another.
A free trial can also require a valid payment method, have restrictions, or expire before the next major event. It is an emergency option, not a guarantee that a last-minute signup will work under peak demand.
5. Separate a local connection problem from a platform problem
Try another app or website on the same television. If every service is buffering, reboot the router, move closer to the access point, or switch to a more stable connection if possible. A wired connection using an Ethernet cable for streaming can remove local Wi-Fi interference and make troubleshooting easier.
But Ethernet cannot repair an incorrect Hulu event schedule, a missing entitlement, a broken app route, or a platform-side outage. If other services work and only the event is missing or unavailable, repeatedly changing cables or devices may waste time. Check the official support channel and the alternate viewing path instead.
6. Keep the fallback ready through the opening minutes
- Sign in before the event begins and confirm that the account is active.
- Install or update the standalone app before the broadcast, not during the opening monologue.
- Bookmark the official event page and note whether the service names a separate replay destination.
- Know how to switch the television to its antenna input or local ABC channel.
- If using a backup streaming service, verify local ABC coverage and cancellation terms before the event.
What Hulu and other streamers need to fix
The obvious lesson from 2025 is that a live event should not be assigned a hard end time that assumes the program will run exactly to schedule. Awards shows routinely run long. The event configuration needs a sufficient buffer, or the platform needs a way to extend the live window without forcing viewers into an “event has ended” state while the broadcast is still on air.
The 2026 lesson is different. Subscription bundles need a clear entitlement model and a single, unmistakable answer to the question: “Where do I watch this live?” If the answer is standalone Hulu, the combined Disney+/Hulu interface should say that prominently instead of showing adjacent programming and leaving users to infer that the event is unavailable. If the replay moves to Disney+, that should also be explained without making the live and on-demand destinations appear contradictory.

Platforms should also communicate the difference between a feed-delivery failure and an access failure. “The stream is down” tells users one thing; “your plan is eligible, but you must open this specific app or website” tells them another. Precision matters when millions of people are troubleshooting at once.
Does this mean streaming is failing at live television?
No. These incidents do not establish that Hulu has a uniquely high failure rate, that its infrastructure was definitively under-capacity, or that broadcast television is universally replacing or defeating streaming. They show a more specific weakness: live programming has less tolerance for mistakes than an on-demand catalog.
For a normal episode, a viewer can wait, refresh, select another copy, or return later. For the Oscars, a login failure during the opening minutes, an event that cannot be found after the red carpet, or a cutoff before the final awards is a very visible failure. The viewer cannot recreate the shared live moment simply by watching a replay hours later.
That is why Hulu’s 2025 cutoff and 2026 bundle confusion belong in the same industry conversation even though they should not be described as the same outage. Netflix’s delayed Love Is Blind reunion and the complaints surrounding the Tyson–Paul fight reinforce the pattern: major live events test authentication, routing, scheduling, delivery, and support simultaneously.
Source note: This account draws on reporting and statements from Disney, Hulu support, TheWrap, TV Answer Man, the Associated Press, Axios, Netflix, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and FCC consumer guidance. Frequently Asked Questions
Did Hulu fail in the same way during the 2025 and 2026 Oscars?
No. During the 2025 Oscars, some viewers had login problems and Hulu’s stream ended before Best Actress and Best Picture. In 2026, the documented problem was mainly that some viewers using the combined Disney+/Hulu experience could not find or access the live ceremony. Hulu directed them to the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com, and some users also reported errors or buffering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Could all Hulu subscribers watch the 2026 Oscars?
Hulu’s March 6, 2026 guide said that all Hulu subscribers could stream the 98th Oscars live without an additional add-on. However, the live event was directed to the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com for some users, while the replay was expected on Disney+. Plan details and event availability can change, so viewers should check the current official event guide.
Why did Hulu stop the 2025 Oscars before the ending?
The 2025 feed displayed an “event has ended” message before the ceremony’s final two major awards. Disney apologized, and reporting attributed the cutoff to an event schedule that did not allow enough time for the ceremony to run long. Hulu later made a replay available.
What is the best backup if Hulu is not working for a live event?
First check the event owner’s official viewing guide and the platform’s support account. Then try the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com if the event is missing from a combined bundle interface. Where available, local ABC over the air is an independent fallback. An antenna may help, but reception varies by location and may require a channel rescan.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Hulu’s 2025 Oscars failure was a real access-and-scheduling breakdown that cut off the live ceremony before Best Actress and Best Picture. The 2026 incident was primarily a confusing split between the combined Disney+/Hulu experience and the standalone Hulu app or Hulu.com, with some playback complaints but no confirmed repeat of the premature cutoff. For future live events, verify the exact app, keep local ABC or another checked-for-coverage fallback ready, and remember that a working on-demand service does not guarantee a reliable live broadcast.
