Hulu announced on March 11, 2022, that Unlimited DVR would become part of every Hulu + Live TV subscription at no additional charge. The change took effect on April 13, 2022. It remains part of the Live TV offering, but “unlimited” refers to storage capacity—not permanent access: Hulu currently says recordings are retained for up to nine months.
What Hulu changed in 2022
Before the change, Hulu + Live TV included up to 50 hours of DVR storage. Subscribers could pay for Enhanced Cloud DVR, which raised the allowance to as much as 200 hours.
Hulu’s announcement made Unlimited DVR part of the Hulu + Live TV base offering. Customers who already paid for Enhanced Cloud DVR were to be moved automatically to Unlimited DVR and receive lower monthly bills. The announcement listed the former Enhanced Cloud DVR price as $9.99 per month, or $14.98 per month when combined with Unlimited Screens. Those were historical add-on prices, not current pricing.

What “Unlimited DVR” means in practice

Hulu’s current U.S. Live TV page says recordings can be stored for up to nine months. A recording that reaches that limit may disappear even though the service still describes its DVR capacity as unlimited.
Fast-forwarding applies to DVR recordings where supported. It should not automatically be understood as permission to skip commercials in every on-demand title, or as a guarantee that every live broadcast can be controlled like a completed recording. Device, app, programming-rights, sports, network and regional restrictions can affect playback.
Who received the benefit?
- New Hulu + Live TV subscribers: Unlimited DVR became part of the subscription automatically.
- Existing subscribers without a DVR add-on: They received the larger DVR feature without a separate DVR charge.
- Existing Enhanced Cloud DVR customers: Hulu said they would transition to Unlimited DVR and see a billing reduction.
- Customers with Enhanced Cloud DVR and Unlimited Screens: Unlimited DVR and Unlimited Screens were separate features. The DVR change should not be interpreted as a promise of unlimited simultaneous viewing.
If an old DVR charge still appears on an account, check the itemized bill first. The charge may relate to Unlimited Screens or another plan feature rather than DVR. Customers who believe they are still being billed for a discontinued DVR add-on should contact Hulu support.

What Hulu + Live TV includes now
As displayed on Hulu’s U.S. Live TV page on August 16, 2026:
- Hulu (With Ads) + Live TV was advertised at $89.99 per month.
- The offer advertised more than 100 live channels.
- Unlimited DVR was included.
- Recordings could be retained for up to nine months.
- Fast-forwarding through DVR content was advertised.
- A three-day trial was shown for eligible customers where available.
Hulu says pricing, channel lineups, features, compatible devices, regional availability and other offer details can change. The current package also uses newer Disney- and ESPN-related bundle terminology, so older descriptions of the plan as simply “Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN+” may no longer describe the exact offer shown at signup.

What the feature does not cover
Unlimited DVR belongs to Hulu + Live TV, not to every Hulu subscription. A regular on-demand Hulu plan does not become a live-TV DVR service merely because it includes access to Hulu’s catalog.
Nor does Unlimited DVR remove the normal limitations of a cloud service. Local channels depend on location, sports may be affected by blackouts and rights agreements, and a recording may be unavailable because of programming restrictions, device support or a plan change. A title in Hulu’s on-demand library is also not necessarily equivalent to a DVR recording; its advertising and playback rules may differ.
Is Hulu + Live TV a good choice for DVR users?
The change is most useful for households that record a large amount of television, follow sports or news, watch seasonal programs, or want live channels alongside Hulu’s on-demand ecosystem. Those viewers no longer need to manage an hourly storage ceiling or buy a separate DVR upgrade.

It is less compelling for someone who wants only a small selection of channels, does not use Hulu’s broader bundle, needs a particular regional sports network, or expects recordings to function as a permanent archive. The $89.99 price is for the wider live-TV package; “no additional cost” means DVR is not separately itemized, not that the overall subscription is inexpensive.

Do not compare live-TV services on the word “unlimited” alone. Check:
- How long recordings remain available.
- Whether fast-forwarding is allowed on DVR recordings and on-demand programming.
- Local-channel coverage, regional sports networks and blackout rules.
- Simultaneous-stream limits.
- The included on-demand libraries and bundle services.
- Price after any trial or promotional period.
- Supported devices and the quality of the DVR interface.
Services such as YouTube TV, Fubo, DIRECTV STREAM, Sling TV and Philo can be useful comparison points, but their current prices, channel lineups and DVR rules should be checked directly before making a decision.

Quick troubleshooting
The DVR option is missing
Confirm that the account has Hulu + Live TV rather than standalone Hulu, verify that you are signed into the correct account, update the app or try a supported browser, and check whether the program is live, on demand or already recorded.
A recording will not fast-forward
Confirm that it is a DVR recording, test another recording, and check the device or app version. The restriction may be specific to the title. Also verify that the recording has not expired.
A recording disappeared
Check whether it is older than nine months, whether it was manually deleted, or whether the account changed plans. You can also search Hulu’s current on-demand catalog, although an on-demand listing is not a guaranteed replacement for the DVR recording.
