Yes—but indirectly. Toby Keith helped Scott Borchetta establish Big Machine Records, the label that signed Taylor Swift. The available accounts credit Borchetta with pursuing Swift and making her the offer; they do not establish that Keith discovered or signed her.
Keith’s connection was to the label, not a documented artist signing
TIME reported in 2024 that Keith helped Borchetta found Big Machine, then left the partnership about six months later to focus on his own label, Show Dog Nashville. That early label-level involvement helped create the setting in which Swift’s recording career began, but it is different from personally recruiting her.
Accounts that describe Keith as an early financial backer offer a secondary interpretation of his contribution. The precise financing and ownership terms are not established by primary corporate records in the sources cited here, so it is safest to describe Keith’s role as helping establish the label rather than assign him a specific stake or claim he controlled Swift’s signing. TIME’s 2024 account and Saving Country Music’s retrospective frame the distinction between the label’s early backing and Borchetta’s direct pursuit of Swift.
Scott Borchetta pursued Swift before Big Machine opened
The Los Angeles Times reported that Borchetta met Swift on an earlier trip to Nashville, was impressed by her and her song samples, and asked her father to keep him updated. Later, Borchetta offered her the opportunity to record her own songs and have input into production at the not-yet-open Big Machine. The account places the direct artist relationship with Borchetta, not Keith. The Los Angeles Times profile describes that sequence.

- The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th
Swift agreed to wait for Borchetta’s new company, according to the publisher description for Who Is Taylor Swift? That supports the broad timeline, though a publisher’s summary is not a contemporaneous contract record.
Big Machine gave the signing a launch platform
Borchetta described Big Machine’s 2005 start as small: it launched with 13 employees. In a 2011 Fast Company interview, he also discussed the label’s early promotion of Swift through radio, television, and MySpace. In other words, Borchetta’s offer connected Swift to a new company, and the label then worked to build an audience for her. Fast Company’s interview records Borchetta’s account of the launch and promotion.

- Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released worldwide October 3, 2025
That sequence explains Keith’s indirect significance: helping establish Big Machine contributed to the infrastructure that could sign and promote Swift. The evidence supports that connection without making Keith the person who identified Swift’s talent or negotiated her deal.
What Swift’s Toby Keith quote does—and does not—show
TIME reproduced a remark Swift made in a 2005 WSMV 4 Nashville interview, when she was 15: “You’re in the room with him and you can feel it. There’s a power there and you’re just like, ‘Oh my God.’ I don’t think I’ll ever get to a point where I won’t see him and be like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Toby Keith.’” The quote conveys her awe of Keith’s presence. It does not say that he discovered or signed her. TIME’s report attributes the words to Swift and identifies the WSMV interview.
