To watch YouTube while texting, browsing, using maps, or working in another app, turn on Picture-in-Picture (PiP), play an eligible video, and leave the YouTube app. The video should shrink into a movable floating window. Free PiP generally covers non-music videos on supported iPhone, iPad, and Android devices; YouTube Premium is required for official-app background playback and for PiP on music content.
PiP and background play are different features: PiP keeps the video visible, while background play keeps audio running after YouTube is minimized or the screen is locked.
Picture-in-Picture versus background play
YouTube uses two separate ways to continue playback outside its normal player.

How to use PiP on an iPhone or iPad
Check the requirements
- Use iOS or iPadOS 15.0 or later.
- Enable PiP in Apple’s system settings.
- Enable PiP in the YouTube app.
YouTube’s iOS instructions are at YouTube Help for iPhone and iPad.
Turn it on and start playback
- Open Settings → General → Picture in Picture.
- Turn on Start PiP Automatically.
- Open YouTube, tap your profile picture, then choose Settings → Playback.
- Turn on Picture-in-Picture.
- Play a qualifying video and swipe up to leave YouTube (or press the Home button on older devices).
The player should collapse into a floating window that you can drag around the screen while another app is open.
Close or restore the window
- Tap the PiP window to show its controls.
- Tap the X in the upper-left corner to close it.
- Tap the window to return to YouTube.
- If it is partly off-screen, drag it back. It may appear as a small edge tab rather than having stopped.
How to use PiP on Android
Allow Android’s PiP permission
Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. Start with Settings → Apps → YouTube → Picture-in-picture → Allow picture-in-picture. On some phones the same control is under Apps and notifications → Advanced → Special app access → Picture-in-picture → YouTube.

Enable YouTube PiP
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings → Playback.
- Turn on Picture-in-Picture.
- Play an eligible video, then swipe up or press Home to leave YouTube.

Close PiP
Tap the window and choose X, or drag it to the bottom of the screen. For Premium members, dismissing the PiP window can leave playback continuing in background mode.

- Non-music long-form videos: PiP is generally available to users on supported iOS, iPadOS, and Android devices.
- Music content: Official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and user-generated song covers require Premium for PiP.
- Shorts: YouTube’s current help page says non-music Shorts PiP is available to all users on iOS and Android. Update the app if the control is missing.
- Background play: Requires Premium in the official mobile apps and is unavailable in the Shorts player.
YouTube announced the global expansion for long-form, non-music PiP on April 29, 2026; the United States already had free PiP, so that announcement did not change the U.S. experience. See YouTube’s announcement and its current feature documentation.
How to keep YouTube audio playing in another app or with the screen off
For dependable background playback in the official apps, sign in to the account with an active YouTube Premium membership, play a video, and leave YouTube or turn off the screen. To choose when it operates:

- Open Settings.
- Under Background & Downloads, select Background Play.
- Choose Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers.
Premium background play also applies, where available, in the YouTube Music and YouTube Kids mobile apps. It does not turn the Shorts player into a background audio player. Details are in YouTube Help.

Which option fits your use?
Use free PiP when
- You need to see an ordinary, non-music video while messaging or browsing.
- Your supported phone or tablet has both PiP settings enabled.
- You do not need audio after locking the screen.
Consider YouTube Premium when
- You want audio with the screen off or while another app is active.
- You regularly watch music videos or other music-focused content in PiP.
- You want ad-free viewing, downloads, and the other benefits included with the plan.
Check the live offer for your country at YouTube Premium; prices and availability change by location and date. YouTube announced that Premium Lite would add Background Play and Downloads in 2026, but availability, supported content, and pricing are country-specific. - Check the content first. Test a normal non-music long-form video. Music restrictions can look like a device problem.
- Recheck system permission. On Android, allow YouTube under the device’s PiP permission; on iPhone or iPad, enable Start PiP Automatically.
- Recheck YouTube’s setting. Confirm Settings → Playback → Picture-in-Picture.
- Update YouTube from your device’s app store, especially when Shorts PiP is missing.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then restart the device.
- Verify the account. Premium benefits only apply to the signed-in account that has the membership.
- Check membership status and location. Premium benefits depend on an active membership and availability where you are.
- Check connection and background data. Network restrictions can interrupt playback.
- Stop competing audio. Another app playing audio can prevent background playback.
- Try another video. If only one video fails, its content restriction is more likely than a hardware fault.

Using YouTube on a computer
On a desktop or laptop, resize the browser and place it beside another application, or use the operating system’s split-screen or window-snapping feature. Some browsers also expose their own video pop-out or PiP control. Browser labels and behavior change, and YouTube’s documented Premium background-play feature specifically concerns mobile apps, so do not assume a desktop tab will continue audio after the screen is locked.

Browser workarounds and unofficial apps
Mobile-browser methods can sometimes keep audio playing, but they are not dependable replacements for the official app. YouTube, iOS, Android, and browsers change behavior independently; an update can disable a workaround. Third-party or modified clients and sideloaded APKs also introduce account, privacy, security, malware, and terms-of-service risks. Use the official app’s PiP for eligible video multitasking and Premium for supported background playback.
The Bottom Line
Turn on PiP and leave YouTube for a floating video window. For non-music videos, this is generally free on supported iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. Choose YouTube Premium when you need music PiP, audio with other apps, or playback with the screen locked.
