Apple removed Musi from the App Store on September 24, 2024, after YouTube and music-industry organizations complained that the app used YouTube content in ways that allegedly breached platform terms and infringed intellectual-property rights. Musi disputed those allegations and sued Apple. On March 16, 2026, Judge Eumi K. Lee dismissed Musi’s amended complaint with prejudice, holding that Apple’s developer agreement gave it the contractual right to stop offering the app after notice.
As of August 16, 2026, Musi is not available through the normal iPhone or iPad App Store. The ruling ended Musi’s pleaded case against Apple, but it did not declare that every underlying copyright or YouTube-terms question was finally adjudicated, nor did it permanently prohibit a future app or business arrangement.

The short answer
Musi was an iOS app that presented publicly available YouTube content through its own interface. Apple’s filings described it as removing YouTube advertising, replacing it with Musi advertising or offering ad-free listening for a fee. The dispute was therefore not simply about a missing App Store listing: it involved alleged YouTube terms-of-service violations, advertising practices and possible copyright or other intellectual-property claims.
Apple said it received complaints from YouTube, IFPI, Sony Music Entertainment and the National Music Publishers’ Association, warned Musi several times, and was entitled to delist the app under its developer agreement. Musi alleged that YouTube supplied no meaningful evidence, that it tried to address the concerns, and that Apple breached its contract by removing the app. Those statements were competing litigation positions, not findings that Musi had committed every alleged violation.

The decisive legal result came in Judge Lee’s March 16, 2026 order: Apple’s motion to dismiss was granted, Musi’s amended complaint was dismissed with prejudice, and further amendment was denied.
What Musi did
Musi was not a conventional, directly licensed subscription catalog on the evidence described in the court filings. It used YouTube-hosted material and supplied a separate listening interface. Apple said the service removed YouTube ads, inserted Musi’s own advertising or charged for an ad-free option. The legal dispute centered on whether that operation complied with YouTube’s rules and rights-holder requirements.
That distinction matters. Calling Musi simply a “free music-streaming service” obscures why YouTube, labels and publishers objected, while calling it definitively illegal would go beyond what the dismissal order decided.

What Musi alleged
In its October 2024 complaint, Musi characterized the delisting as abrupt and unjustified. It alleged that YouTube gave Apple no meaningful explanation or supporting evidence, that Musi attempted to address YouTube’s concerns, and that Apple knew the allegations were unsubstantiated. Musi claimed Apple violated the Apple Developer Program License Agreement and the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, causing substantial business and reputational harm.
Those are allegations from Musi’s pleading. The court did not adopt them as factual findings.

What Apple defended
Apple’s defense was broader than saying it merely obeyed a YouTube request. In its opposition to Musi’s preliminary-injunction motion, Apple argued that:
- the developer agreement allowed Apple to stop marketing, offering or permitting downloads of an app “at any time, with or without cause,” subject to notice;
- Apple had received multiple complaints, not just one brief YouTube message;
- the complaints alleged both YouTube-terms violations and copyright or other intellectual-property problems;
- Apple was not required to adjudicate the underlying dispute among Musi, YouTube, publishers, labels and other rights holders; and
- Musi had repeatedly been told to resolve the matter directly with YouTube.
The relevant Schedule 2 and 3 terms reserved a right to cease offering licensed applications and specifically addressed suspected third-party intellectual-property infringement. Apple’s current developer-terms page says the English agreement accepted in a developer account is the binding, up-to-date version; the court case concerned the version applicable to the 2024 removal.
What the 2026 court ruling actually decided
Apple’s contract defense prevailed
Judge Lee held that Apple had a contractual right to stop offering Musi after providing notice. Because that express term permitted the action, Musi’s breach-of-contract claim failed as a matter of law.
The implied-covenant claim also failed
The implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing could not be used to impose duties that contradicted the agreement’s express language. The court therefore dismissed that claim as well.
“With prejudice” has a practical meaning
Dismissal with prejudice means Musi could not keep the same pleaded case alive by filing another amended complaint in that action. The court also denied further leave to amend. The order did not require Apple to restore Musi.

What the ruling did not decide
The order’s central holding was contractual. It should not be reported as a final judicial finding that Musi infringed every copyright, violated every YouTube rule or lost every possible dispute with YouTube and music-rights organizations. The dismissal resolved Musi’s claims against Apple at the pleading stage; it did not supply a universal merits judgment on all underlying rights questions.
Why fans are fighting back
Former users have responded with online petitions, Reddit and forum discussions, complaints about losing access after changing devices or accounts, and requests for a replacement. A Change.org petition reflects that demand, although its signature count and activity change over time.

- A petition can demonstrate user demand and dissatisfaction.
- It cannot override Apple’s App Store distribution decision.
- It cannot resolve YouTube licensing, API, advertising or copyright concerns.
Can former users still use Musi?
If it is already installed
An existing installation may continue to open, but that is not guaranteed. Functionality can depend on Musi’s servers, changes to YouTube, iOS compatibility and whether the app is deleted. A working copy today is not the same as an officially supported service.
If you deleted it or bought a new iPhone
Previous download history does not guarantee that an unavailable listing can be redownloaded. A new device may not receive Musi through ordinary App Store history, and Apple’s January 2025 refusal to grant a preliminary injunction means there was no court-ordered restoration.
Be cautious with IPA files and “replacement” downloads
Unofficial IPA repositories, sideloading services and jailbreak tools can expose Apple credentials, personal data and devices to malware. They may also violate platform rules or distribute an unauthorized copy. Do not treat a download advertised as “Musi” as authentic merely because it uses the name.

Protect playlists and listening data
If Musi still opens on a device, document playlist names and track information while access lasts. Export or recreate lists where the app or another service legitimately permits it. There is no established guarantee that Musi playlists can be transferred automatically to another platform.

No mainstream service is an exact Musi substitute. The trade-off is usually between a free tier with advertising or restrictions and a paid plan that adds ad-free background playback, downloads and fuller on-demand control. Check current regional plans directly before subscribing.

| YouTube Music | Listeners whose playlists and discovery habits center on YouTube | Closest catalog context, while ad-free background playback and downloads generally require the applicable paid plan. | music.youtube.com |
| Spotify | Playlist, discovery, social and cross-platform users | Its free tier and device restrictions vary by market and product; it is not a clone of Musi’s model. | spotify.com/us/premium |
| Pandora | Radio-style, lean-back listening | Better for stations than precise, Musi-style search-and-play control. | pandora.com/upgrade |
| Local library or purchased downloads | Listeners who want control independent of a streaming platform | Requires legally acquired files and personal management; it cannot reproduce YouTube’s enormous on-demand catalog. | Apple Music library information |

What happens next?
Fan pressure could show that demand remains, but it cannot substitute for resolving the platform and rights-holder objections that led to the delisting. Musi is not legally declared impossible forever: a future app, listing or business arrangement would be a separate development. For now, however, the lawsuit that sought to force Apple’s hand is over, and former users should plan around an unavailable App Store listing rather than expect a petition to restore it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the court rule that Musi infringed copyright?
No. The March 16, 2026 dismissal focused on Apple’s contractual authority and Musi’s failed claims against Apple; it was not a blanket merits ruling on every copyright or YouTube-terms allegation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a petition bring Musi back?
A petition can show user demand, but it cannot require Apple to relist an app or resolve licensing, platform-policy and intellectual-property disputes.
Is Musi permanently banned?
The app is unavailable through the normal App Store as of August 16, 2026. The ruling does not prohibit a separately negotiated future app or business arrangement, so “permanently banned” would overstate the evidence.
