There is no single way to “unblock YouTube.” First identify what is actually blocked: Restricted Mode, your account, one video, a device, a school or workplace network, your ISP, or YouTube itself in a particular region. Turn off personal settings when you control them; request approval for managed networks; and consider a reputable VPN only where it is lawful and permitted.
First, identify what is blocked

YouTube explains that Restricted Mode can operate at browser or device level, while schools, libraries, universities, network administrators, and mobile providers can impose additional filtering. See YouTube’s Restricted Mode guidance.
If Restricted Mode is blocking videos
On a personal computer, sign in to YouTube, click your profile picture in the upper-right corner, select Restricted mode at the bottom of the menu, then use the activation control to turn it off.
Restricted Mode filters potentially mature content; it is not the same as an age restriction. Turning it off does not make an age-restricted video available to an ineligible or signed-out viewer.

When the switch is unavailable or immediately returns
Open YouTube’s content-restrictions page while signed in. The diagnostic can indicate whether the restriction comes from your account, device, network, administrator, DNS configuration, or mobile provider.
Restricted Mode may be set separately in different browsers, browser profiles, and devices. Signing out or using an incognito window may change an account-level setting, but it will not reliably defeat a DNS filter, firewall, carrier restriction, or device-management policy.
If a school, workplace, parent, or carrier forced the restriction
An administrator-imposed block is normally a policy, not a YouTube preference that an individual user can legitimately disable. Ask the teacher, IT department, parent, or network administrator to approve the specific video. Include the direct URL and explain its educational or work-related purpose.
Possible approved alternatives include an authorized embed, transcript, downloadable lesson, official creator page, or licensed copy. Do not install an unauthorized VPN, proxy, browser extension, or app on a managed device.
Google Workspace administrators can configure Strict, Moderate, or Unrestricted YouTube access, approve individual videos, designate approvers, and grant access to selected users or organizational units. Administrators should consult Google’s documentation for organization YouTube settings.

Google also documents network-wide enforcement through DNS CNAME records and HTTP headers. These are administrator procedures, not instructions for students or employees to circumvent controls.
Home Wi-Fi, router, DNS, and parental controls
If you own or administer the network, check the router’s parental controls, family-safety service, and content-filtering settings. Also check whether a DNS-filtering product or work/school profile is active on the device.
- Compare YouTube on home Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Review the authorized router, family-safety, or DNS settings.
- Check for device-management, VPN, or filtering apps.
- After an authorized change, restart the router and retest the same device.
- Contact your ISP or mobile carrier if the filter is provider-managed.
Do not change DNS blindly. DNS changes cannot fix account restrictions, firewalls, managed devices, private videos, or every national-level block, and they may undermine household safety settings. YouTube specifically advises contacting a mobile provider when DNS restrictions are set to Moderate or Strict; see its troubleshooting guidance.

If YouTube itself is blocked
Test YouTube on another network you are allowed to use. A phone hotspot is a useful diagnostic: if YouTube works on cellular data but not Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi network is probably responsible. A hotspot still consumes cellular data and may be prohibited at school or work.

It is not guaranteed to work. YouTube or the network may block VPN addresses, and a VPN cannot restore a private or deleted video, remove an account restriction, satisfy an age-verification requirement, or override a managed device.
Check local law, school or workplace rules, and the VPN provider’s terms before using one. A VPN does not make copyrighted, age-restricted, or otherwise unlawful access permissible.
Generic VPN setup
- Choose a reputable provider that operates in your country and supports your device.
- Download its official app from the provider’s website or your device’s official app store.
- Sign in, then connect to a nearby server or a location where the service is legally available.
- Close and reopen YouTube, or restart the browser.
- If necessary, try another server or protocol.
- Disconnect when finished if the VPN causes banking, streaming, CAPTCHA, or connection problems.
Do not enter Google credentials into a third-party “YouTube unblocker” page. Avoid public proxy sites and random browser extensions: you must trust their operators, and they may expose URLs, metadata, login pages, or malicious content. Tor can help with some censorship but is slower, may trigger CAPTCHAs, and is not an appropriate method for bypassing school or employer controls.
Comparing VPN plans without misleading “best VPN” claims
Do not choose solely by the lowest promotional monthly equivalent. Compare availability in your country, official device apps, server selection, simultaneous connections, refund terms, renewal pricing, and whether you need YouTube access or broader privacy protection. Long-term introductory prices can renew at materially higher rates.

If only one video is blocked
Age-restricted video
YouTube says age-restricted videos are unavailable to signed-out viewers and users under 18, and are also unavailable while Restricted Mode is active. The supported route is to sign in with an eligible adult account and complete any required age-verification process. See YouTube’s age-restricted content guidance.
Do not use age-verification bypass websites, modified URLs, unofficial clients, or other methods intended to defeat YouTube’s age controls.
Private or deleted video
A VPN cannot restore a private or deleted video. Ask the owner to grant access or locate an official replacement on the creator’s channel or website.
Region-restricted video
Licensing, uploader settings, or local policy can make a video unavailable in a particular country. Check the exact message, then look for an official upload, licensed broadcaster, public-domain version, or transcript. Changing YouTube’s profile location alone does not change the network location represented by your IP address, and a VPN does not guarantee access.
Copyright, policy, or organizational restriction
If the message refers to copyright, policy removal, or an organization’s approval system, use the creator’s official alternatives or ask the relevant rights holder or administrator. Do not rely on pirated mirrors or unknown download sites.

Phones, smart TVs, and game consoles
- Test the same account in a browser and in the official YouTube app.
- Update the app through the device’s official app store.
- Force-close the app, restart the device, and test again.
- Check for an active VPN, DNS-filtering app, ad blocker, family-safety app, or work profile.
- On a TV or console, test the same network with a phone or laptop.
If only the TV or console fails, the cause may be device software, app support, or that device’s network configuration rather than a YouTube-wide block. Avoid unofficial “unblocker” apps that request excessive permissions or account credentials.
Educational alternatives: Classroom and Slides
If a video is needed for a lesson, ask an administrator or approver to authorize it rather than trying to circumvent the filter. An approved video may be shared by link and may not appear in ordinary YouTube search results.
Google Workspace for Education has limitations around private videos in Classroom and Slides. If a shared private video will not play, the owner may need to change it to unlisted or use an approved alternative. See Google’s organization YouTube settings documentation.

Can I use incognito mode to unblock YouTube at school or work?
Usually not. Incognito may change account or browser behavior, but network, DNS, firewall, and managed-device policies can still apply to signed-out users.
Will changing DNS unblock YouTube?
Only some DNS-level filters on a network you control. It will not fix every network block, account restriction, device policy, private video, or age gate.
Can a VPN unblock an age-restricted video?
No reliable VPN can replace YouTube’s eligibility and age-verification requirements. Sign in with an eligible account instead.
Why does YouTube work on mobile data but not Wi-Fi?
The Wi-Fi router, DNS service, parental-control system, ISP, or network administrator is likely filtering it. Compare the settings only where you are authorized to do so.
