Yes, Netflix works on Ubuntu through a web browser. The most practical options are a current Firefox installation or official Google Chrome with Widevine DRM enabled. Netflix supports some GNU/Linux configurations but warns that playback is not guaranteed on every setup and that Linux-specific troubleshooting is limited.
For the shortest route, open Netflix in Firefox first. If it cannot initialize protected playback, try official 64-bit Google Chrome and follow the DRM steps below.
What you need
- A 64-bit Ubuntu installation. Current mainstream browser support should not be assumed on 32-bit Ubuntu.
- A current Firefox or Google Chrome browser. Netflix currently lists Chrome 117 or later, Firefox 111 or later, Edge 118 or later, and Opera 92 or later for Linux playback. See Netflix’s browser requirements.
- An active Netflix account and a plan that supports the viewing quality you want.
- Working internet, audio, graphics drivers, and system date and time.
- Browser settings that permit protected content.
Netflix’s GNU/Linux support is conditional: the company says that some Linux computers are supported, but it cannot guarantee every distribution, browser build, graphics stack, or configuration. Netflix also says it does not troubleshoot Linux-specific device problems.
Method 1: Watch Netflix with Firefox
Firefox is the simplest first choice if it is already installed on Ubuntu. Mozilla provides official 64-bit Linux builds from its Firefox for Linux page.

- Update Firefox through Ubuntu’s normal software updates or through the same channel used to install it.
- Open Firefox and visit netflix.com.
- Sign in and select a title.
- If Firefox asks to enable DRM or download the Widevine Content Decryption Module, allow it.
- In Firefox settings, confirm that Play DRM-controlled content is enabled. The exact menu layout can vary between Ubuntu’s Firefox package and Mozilla’s direct download.
- Reload Netflix. If Widevine has just installed or updated, restart Firefox before trying again.
When the setup is working, a title should play directly in the browser. Ubuntu does not need a separate Netflix application for normal streaming.
Method 2: Watch Netflix with Google Chrome
Official Google Chrome is a useful fallback when Firefox cannot initialize DRM or when you prefer a Chromium-based browser with Google’s Widevine component. Google documents Chrome for 64-bit Ubuntu 18.04 and later, among other Linux systems; architecture and distribution requirements still apply to the particular computer.
Install Chrome through Ubuntu’s graphical installer
- Download the 64-bit Debian/Ubuntu
.debpackage from Google Chrome. - Open the downloaded package in Ubuntu’s software installer.
- Choose Install and authenticate with your administrator password.
- Launch Chrome, open netflix.com, sign in, and start a title.
Google says Chrome is added to the software manager for updates. Its official Linux installation guidance is available at Google Chrome Help.

Optional terminal installation
If the package is in your Downloads folder, you can install it with:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.debThis command installs a package that you have already downloaded; it does not download Chrome. The filename may differ, so replace it with the actual name of the file on your system.
Why Netflix needs Widevine DRM
Netflix streams protected video. Your browser therefore needs Encrypted Media Extensions and Google’s Widevine Content Decryption Module to authenticate and decrypt the stream.

Widevine may be enabled, downloaded, or updated differently depending on the browser package. If it is disabled, missing, corrupted, or unable to update, Netflix may show a playback error or ask you to update content protection. Installing random “Netflix codecs” or copying Widevine files from another computer is not the normal solution.

Netflix says the browser is unsupported
- Update Firefox or Chrome.
- Confirm you are using a browser listed by Netflix for Linux.
- Disable user-agent-switching extensions.
- Test an unmodified Firefox installation or official Google Chrome.
- Avoid troubleshooting with an unofficial Chromium build until the supported browsers have been tested.
Changing the browser’s reported identity does not add missing DRM capabilities. Netflix recommends switching to a supported browser for unsupported-browser errors; see its M7701-1003 guidance.
Chrome shows “Pardon the interruption” or M7701-1003
- Open
chrome://settings/content/protectedContent. - Enable Sites can play protected content.
- Open
chrome://components. - Find Widevine Content Decryption Module.
- Click Check for update.
- Restart Chrome, then try Netflix again.

Chrome shows M7702-1003
First enable protected content, update Chrome, update Widevine from chrome://components, and restart the browser. If the component will not update, temporarily test without aggressive extensions, proxy filtering, or security software. Reinstall official Chrome only after the simpler checks fail. Netflix’s documented procedure is in its M7702-1003 guidance.
Firefox will not play DRM video
- Confirm Play DRM-controlled content is enabled.
- Return to Netflix and accept the Widevine installation prompt if it appears.
- Wait for the module to install or update, then restart Firefox.
- Update Firefox through its normal installation channel.
- Test a private window or a new Firefox profile to rule out extensions and damaged site data.
- If the problem remains, test official Google Chrome.
There is a black screen, audio only, or frozen video
These symptoms can result from a graphics-driver or hardware-acceleration interaction, an extension, stale Netflix site data, a display-server issue, or VPN/proxy filtering. Try the following in order:

- Test Netflix in a private or incognito window.
- Disable extensions temporarily.
- Clear Netflix site data and sign in again.
- Restart the browser.
- Test hardware acceleration in the browser settings. If it is enabled, try disabling it; if disabled, try enabling it. This is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix.
- Update Ubuntu’s graphics packages and reboot.
- Compare Firefox with official Chrome.
Video quality is lower than expected
Netflix’s current Linux table lists maximum playback of up to HD (720p) in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, and up to Full HD (1080p) in Opera. It does not list 4K playback for Linux browsers. These are published platform limits, not guarantees: your plan, title, account playback settings, network conditions, browser implementation, and display path also matter.

Do not assume that a 4K monitor or fast broadband connection will produce 4K Netflix playback on Ubuntu. Unofficial “1080p” extensions are not an official or guaranteed remedy.

Chromium-based does not automatically mean Netflix-supported. Different Ubuntu packages may omit Widevine, apply different sandbox permissions, or use policies that Netflix does not recognize. A browser may play ordinary online video while failing with Netflix’s protected stream.
Use current Firefox or official Google Chrome as the baseline. If another Chromium-based browser fails, test one of those browsers rather than manually copying DRM libraries or running third-party scripts. Netflix specifically warns that some Chromium-based browsers are unsupported.
What not to install
Older Linux instructions mentioning Silverlight, Pipelight, Netflix Desktop, special user-agent spoofing, manually copied Widevine files, or old launch flags are obsolete or fragile defaults. They can break after browser updates and do not reliably solve a missing or unsupported DRM configuration.
When Ubuntu is not the best Netflix platform
Ubuntu is a reasonable choice for browser streaming, but another platform may be better if you require 4K, offline downloads, a living-room interface, or manufacturer-supported troubleshooting. A supported smart TV, streaming device, game console, Windows installation, or macOS computer may provide a more predictable experience. Netflix’s documented Linux route is browser streaming; do not assume that offline downloads are available through Ubuntu.
For most Ubuntu users, the practical decision is simple: try updated Firefox, enable Widevine when prompted, and switch to official Chrome if Firefox fails. If both supported browsers fail, investigate DRM settings, extensions, graphics drivers, and network filtering before trying unofficial workarounds.
