How to Watch Netflix from an iPhone on a TV or Monitor Using HDMI

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—you can watch Netflix from an iPhone on an HDMI-equipped TV, monitor, or projector with a compatible wired video adapter. Match the adapter to the iPhone’s connector: Netflix specifies Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter for Lightning iPhones and recommends a video-capable USB-C adapter, such as Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, for USB-C iPhones. Netflix does not support AirPlay or screen mirroring, so a cable or the Netflix app on the TV or a streaming device is the more dependable route.

What you need for Netflix over HDMI

  • An iPhone model that supports wired video output.
  • An adapter that matches the iPhone’s connector and supports video playback.
  • An HDMI cable and an HDMI input on the TV, monitor, or projector. Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter listing says the HDMI cable is sold separately. Apple’s adapter listing
  • A power source for the adapter, if it has a charging input. Power pass-through is useful for longer viewing sessions, but whether video works without it depends on the adapter and setup.

The HDMI connection sends the iPhone’s picture and sound to the display; it does not make the display a smart TV or add a Netflix app to it. You’ll generally choose and control playback on the iPhone.

Identify your iPhone’s connector before choosing an adapter

Check the charging port on the iPhone. A Lightning port needs a Lightning Digital AV Adapter; a USB-C port needs a USB-C adapter or cable that actually supports video output. Connector shape alone does not prove that an accessory can send video.

Netflix warns that some iPhone models do not support wired video output. Check the exact model’s Apple technical specifications under “Video Playback” before buying an adapter. Netflix’s guidance also identifies USB-C or Thunderbolt cables for display playback as needing high-resolution video support; a charging or data cable is not necessarily a video cable. For an iPhone with Lightning

Use Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter with an HDMI cable. Netflix identifies adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported for Netflix playback. A Lightning adapter that fits the port is not automatically supported for protected Netflix video.

For an iPhone with USB-C

Use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or hub with video output. Netflix recommends Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter; it provides HDMI, USB, and USB-C charging connections. Apple lists iOS 12.4 or later as a system requirement and lists output up to 3840×2160 at 60 Hz for compatible iPhone models. Those are adapter specifications, not a guarantee that every Netflix title or connection will play in 4K. The display, cable, content, and full connection chain also matter. Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter specifications

Connect the iPhone to the display

  1. Plug the video adapter into the iPhone.
  2. Connect the HDMI cable to the adapter, then connect the other end to an HDMI input on the display.
  3. If the adapter has a charging input, connect the iPhone charger to it for a longer session or if the setup is unreliable without power.
  4. Turn on the display and select the HDMI input that you used. Apple’s wired-display instructions use this adapter-to-HDMI-to-display connection sequence and tell users to select the correct video source. Apple’s wired-display instructions
  5. Unlock the iPhone and open Netflix. If Netflix was already open, stop playback and relaunch the app after connecting.
  6. Choose a title and start playback. The display may briefly go black while the connection changes resolution or establishes protected playback.

If the iPhone’s screen appears but Netflix playback does not, the picture on the home screen alone does not confirm that the adapter and display can handle Netflix’s protected video.

Verify a Lightning adapter Netflix does not recognize

Netflix gives this check for identifying a Lightning Digital AV Adapter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect all cables from the adapter.
  2. Connect the adapter to the iPhone.
  3. Open Settings > General > About.
  4. Find Apple HDMI Adapter and check Model Number.
  5. Confirm that the number is A1438 or A1621.

Netflix identifies those two models as supported. If neither number appears, its guidance says the adapter is unsupported for Netflix playback. Netflix adapter compatibility steps

Why AirPlay is not the Netflix fallback

An iPhone may use AirPlay with other apps, but Netflix says AirPlay and screen mirroring from iPhone or iPad are not supported for Netflix. If HDMI is inconvenient, use a compatible cast setup or open Netflix on the TV or connected streaming device instead. Netflix casting and mirroring guidance

Troubleshoot by symptom

The display says “No Signal”

  1. Confirm that the display is set to the HDMI input connected to the iPhone.
  2. Unplug and reconnect the adapter and cable at both ends.
  3. Try another HDMI input, then another HDMI cable if available.
  4. Restart the iPhone and check whether its exact model supports wired video output.
  5. If possible, test the adapter with another compatible display.

When there is no signal at all, start with the input, cable, adapter, and wired-video compatibility rather than the Netflix account.

Netflix audio plays but the screen is black

A black picture with sound can indicate a protected-video or HDCP handshake problem. Stop playback, disconnect the adapter and HDMI cable, reconnect the adapter to the iPhone and then HDMI, and select the correct input again. For Lightning, check the adapter model using the steps above. For USB-C, Netflix says the video equipment may need to support HDCP 2.2. Try a different HDMI cable or input and restart the iPhone if the picture remains black. Netflix black-screen troubleshooting

The iPhone home screen appears, but Netflix does not play correctly

The adapter may mirror ordinary content but fail when Netflix starts protected playback. Check Lightning adapter compatibility or USB-C HDCP support, and make sure the iPhone model supports wired output. Updating Netflix and iOS may also help. Do not assume that a charging-only hub, unsupported adapter, or cable that lacks video capability will work just because it fits.

  • Raise the display’s volume and check its audio-output settings.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or speakers that may be receiving the audio.
  • Reconnect HDMI and start playback again.

Video stutters, glitches, or looks distorted

Update Netflix from the App Store and install available iOS updates. Then test another HDMI cable or input, reconnect the adapter, and restart the iPhone. For a detachable USB-C video cable or adapter, try reversing the cable ends if applicable. Confirm that the adapter supports the display’s resolution and protected-video requirements. A downloaded title has black bars

Netflix says downloaded shows and movies may display with black bars on an external display because of the downloaded video’s format. Black bars by themselves do not establish that the adapter is faulty. Netflix’s downloaded-video display note

Choose an adapter that can handle protected video

Before buying, look beyond whether the plug fits. Check these details in the accessory’s specifications:

  • Connector: It must match Lightning or USB-C on your iPhone.
  • Video output: The product must explicitly support display or video output, not only charging or data.
  • Protected playback: For USB-C setups, check for HDCP 2.2 support as Netflix recommends.
  • Power pass-through: A charging input can keep the iPhone powered during longer viewing.
  • Resolution support: Match the adapter’s stated capability to your display and expectations; maximum output does not guarantee a particular Netflix stream quality.
  • Cable and returns: Check whether an HDMI cable is included and whether the seller accepts returns if the adapter does not work with your exact phone and display.

For Lightning, use Netflix’s supported adapter identification rather than relying on a generic “Lightning to HDMI” description. For USB-C, Apple’s multiport adapter is Netflix’s recommendation; a third-party option should explicitly support video and protected content.

When a TV app or streaming device is easier

If you watch Netflix on the same TV frequently, its built-in Netflix app or a connected streaming device avoids keeping the iPhone tethered, uses the device’s own remote, and avoids the phone-to-HDMI adapter chain. For occasional viewing on a monitor or projector without a Netflix app, a compatible wired adapter remains a practical option.
