Spotify’s AI DJ did not launch in 2026: it debuted in beta on February 22, 2023, first for Premium listeners in the United States and Canada. The newer Spotify AI beta announced in July 2026 is Talk to Spotify, a separate conversational feature. DJ offers a narrated, personalized music stream; Talk to Spotify lets eligible users ask questions and control music, podcasts, and audiobooks with follow-up requests.
What Spotify’s AI DJ does
DJ is a personalized music guide that selects songs from Spotify’s catalog and introduces selected tracks or artists with spoken commentary. Spotify describes it as a way to combine familiar favorites with discovery, including new genres, artists, playlists, and older tracks a listener may have stopped playing. Users can ask for a different mood or kind of music rather than leaving the stream entirely on autopilot.
It does not create original songs or operate like professional DJ software that mixes tracks. It selects and presents catalog music, with commentary around the listening experience. Spotify says its personalization technology informs selection and that listener feedback helps shape recommendations; that does not guarantee every session will avoid repetition or match a request exactly. Spotify’s current DJ support page describes its present controls and eligibility.
How Spotify describes the technology
In its 2023 launch announcement, Spotify said DJ combines its personalization technology with OpenAI technology used to help music editors produce commentary and context. Spotify also said its Sonantic voice technology generates the DJ’s synthetic voice, initially based on Xavier “X” Jernigan, then Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships and former host of The Get Up. These are Spotify’s descriptions of the feature, not an independent audit of its technical architecture. Jernigan’s voice model does not mean he personally introduces each track in a listener’s session. Spotify’s original announcement explains the launch and its stated technology.

The timeline is not a promise of universal access. Spotify’s current documentation says language availability is limited, and access can vary by market and account. The dated launch details are in Spotify’s original announcement; check the current support page for the latest instructions rather than assuming an old rollout list applies to every account.
How to find and use DJ in the mobile app
- Open Spotify on a supported mobile device and check the Home screen for the DJ option or card.
- If it is not visible on Home, use Search and search for DJ.
- While music is playing, open Now Playing and tap the chat-window control to bring up DJ’s interactive controls.
- Choose a personalized suggestion or request a mood, genre, or artist. Type a request or tap the microphone to speak, if voice input is available on your account.
Spotify’s original 2023 instructions sent listeners to Home’s Music Feed, where they tapped Play on the DJ card, then the DJ button to change genre, artist, or mood. The interface has since changed, so the current directions on Spotify’s support page are the better guide.

What the newer Talk to Spotify beta adds
Talk to Spotify is a separate conversational experience, announced on July 14, 2026. Rather than mainly presenting an ongoing narrated stream, it lets users type or speak requests, ask questions, and refine what is playing in follow-up turns. Spotify says it can handle questions about music, artists, podcasts, audiobooks, and listening history, as well as actions such as adding a song to the queue or following an artist. Spotify’s examples for Talk to Spotify include requests such as “Make it more upbeat,” “Play songs I listened to in 2024 but not 2025,” and “Add this to my queue.” They are examples from Spotify, not a guarantee that every phrasing or multi-part request will produce the intended result. The beta can misunderstand requests, and generated explanations about music or listening history should not automatically be treated as authoritative.

Who can use DJ and Talk to Spotify?
DJ
Spotify’s current support documentation lists DJ as a Premium feature. Availability also depends on market, language, account rollout, and device; Spotify does not present one universal country list on the support page. The documented entry points are in the mobile app, so this article does not promise equivalent access in the desktop or web player.
Talk to Spotify
At the July 14, 2026 beta announcement, Spotify said the gradual rollout covered Premium users aged 18 or older in the United States, Ireland, and Sweden, on iOS and Android, in English. A qualifying subscription does not guarantee immediate access while rollout is gradual. Spotify’s support documentation is the place to check for current access details and interface changes.

If a feature is missing or not responding
DJ does not appear
- Confirm that the account has Premium.
- Update the Spotify mobile app, then check Home, Search for “DJ,” and Now Playing.
- Consider whether the account’s market or language is supported and whether rollout has reached the account.
- If checking on desktop or the web player, try the documented mobile-app entry points instead.
These checks can help locate the feature, but Spotify does not say reinstalling the app will guarantee access.
Talk to Spotify does not appear
Check the beta’s stated age, Premium, country, language, and mobile-platform criteria, and remember that eligible accounts may receive access at different times. Beta behavior and availability can change.
Voice input fails
- Check that Spotify has microphone permission in the device settings.
- Try typing the request instead, or tap or press and hold the microphone as directed in the app.
- If the issue is spoken replies rather than recognition, check the response-volume control; Spotify says voice responses can be turned on or off there.
The result misses the mark
Try a shorter, more concrete request or give DJ feedback by asking for a different mood or style. DJ is built around personalized selection, while Talk to Spotify is a beta conversational system; neither guarantees an exact track, interpretation, or search through a particular period of listening history.
Which Spotify feature should you choose?
DJ is the more natural choice when you want Spotify to take the lead: it builds a stream and adds spoken context, with controls to redirect the mood or sound. Talk to Spotify is better suited to listeners who want to ask questions, make narrower requests, or use follow-up prompts across more than music. Neither is a replacement for professional DJ software. Both are Premium-oriented features, but subscribing alone does not ensure access to every feature or beta in every region.
