If you bought a movie through Google Play, you usually watch it today through Google TV or YouTube—not a separate Google Play Movies app. Sign in with the same Google Account used for the purchase, then choose the library path for your television: Google TV: Library; Android TV: Shop → Your Library; or most other smart TVs and streaming players: YouTube → Library → Your Movies & Shows. Google describes the current platform destinations in its purchase-access guide.
The quickest method for most televisions
- Open the YouTube app on the TV or streaming device. Make sure it is YouTube, not the separate YouTube TV live-television service.
- Sign in with the Google Account that bought or rented the title.
- Open Library.
- Choose Your Movies & Shows or Purchases. The wording varies by television model and YouTube app version.
- Select the movie or episode and start playback.
This route is normally used on Samsung, LG, Vizio and other YouTube-enabled smart TVs, as well as Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV and supported game consoles. Google lists supported device categories in its YouTube movie-help page.
Google TV: open Library
On a television or streaming device running Google TV, including Chromecast with Google TV:
- Confirm the correct Google Account is active.
- Open the Library tab.
- Select the purchased or rented title.
- Choose Watch or the available playback option.
If the library is empty, check the account before reinstalling anything. A title bought under a different account will not appear merely because that account is also present on the television.

Android TV: use Shop → Your Library
On Android TV, the current path is usually:
- From the Home screen, open Shop.
- Find the Your Library row.
- Select the title. If you have more than 10 items, choose View all.
The Shop tab is not available in every region or on every configuration. If it is missing, open YouTube and use Library → Your Movies & Shows (or Purchases) instead. Google says previously purchased Google Play Movies & TV, YouTube, Android TV and Google TV content should be represented in the Android TV library, although newly purchased YouTube TV shows can remain only in the YouTube library; see Google’s Android TV library instructions and content-availability notes.
Roku, Fire TV, Samsung, LG, Vizio and other smart TVs
Install or open YouTube, sign in to the purchasing Google Account, then open Library. Select Your Movies & Shows or Purchases. Menu names and app availability can differ by model, operating-system version and country.
If the TV does not offer a current YouTube app, add an external streaming device or use casting or HDMI from a computer. Do not assume that an old “Google Play Movies & TV” app is still available: Google has moved the viewing experience to Google TV, Android TV’s Shop area and YouTube, with the transition occurring at different times across platforms.

Cast from a phone, tablet or computer
Phone or tablet
- Put the mobile device and the TV or Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open YouTube or another Chromecast-enabled app containing the purchase.
- Sign in to the correct Google Account and open the title.
- Tap the Cast icon and choose the television or Chromecast.
Computer
- Sign in to YouTube in a supported browser.
- Open Movies & TV from the left-side menu, then Purchased.
- Start the title and use the Cast control when the television is available.
Google notes that casting requires the sender and Google TV device to share Wi-Fi and that an up-to-date Chromecast-enabled app or Chrome browser may be required. See Google’s casting instructions.
Apple TV and AirPlay
The simplest option is usually the YouTube app on Apple TV: sign in, open Library, and choose Your Movies & Shows. As an alternative, on an iPhone or iPad open the Google TV app, start the movie, tap the AirPlay icon and select the Apple TV. The Apple device and Apple TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network; model and software support can change, so treat AirPlay as a backup rather than the universal method.
TVs without a suitable app: HDMI
You can connect a computer, phone or tablet to the television with HDMI if the device, adapter and TV support the connection.

- Use an available HDMI port and the correct cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
- Switch the TV to that HDMI input.
- Play the title in a supported web browser when app mirroring fails.
If you see video but hear no sound, check the device’s audio-output setting and the TV’s selected audio source. Reconnect the cable, try another HDMI input and restart the devices. Google’s TV, Chromecast and HDMI guidance warns that mirroring video directly from some apps may not be supported.
When a movie is missing
- Verify the account. Sign out and back in, and check the purchase receipt to see which account was charged. Also check that YouTube is not using a different or brand account.
- Check the platform’s correct library. Google TV uses Library; Android TV uses Shop → Your Library; YouTube uses Library → Your Movies & Shows or Purchases.
- Check whether it was a rental. A rental disappears after its rental period ends.
- Update and restart. Update YouTube or Google TV, restart the TV or streaming device, and try again.
- Verify on the web. Open YouTube on a computer and check the purchased library. If it is absent there too, the issue is likely account, title or region related rather than the television.
- Try casting. Casting can distinguish an app/interface problem from an account or licensing problem.
- Consider region and licensing. Availability can vary by country and title.
- Use Movies Anywhere when applicable. In the United States, link the Google Account to Movies Anywhere and look under My Movies. Only eligible movies transfer; television shows and non-eligible titles do not.
Purchases, rentals and family access
Google’s help pages state that purchased titles can generally be watched indefinitely, subject to account, platform, title and regional conditions. A rental is different: Google commonly allows about 30 days to begin watching and usually 48 hours after playback starts, but the checkout screen controls the terms for that title. Android TV help also says you generally cannot turn an active rental into a purchase by paying the difference; wait for the rental to expire before buying the same title.
Do not assume every YouTube purchase appears in Google Play Family Library. Google’s purchase guidance specifically notes limitations for movies bought on YouTube.

HD, 4K UHD and HDR
A 4K television alone does not guarantee 4K playback. The final quality is limited by the quality purchased, whether the title is offered in HD/UHD/HDR, the TV and streaming device, HDMI/display capability, app and network conditions. Google says playback can reach only the highest quality supported by both the title and the device. Its approximate minimum download guidance is 2 Mbps for HD and 14 Mbps for 4K; these figures are guidance, not a guarantee against buffering.

No separate subscription is required simply to watch a movie you already purchased. Try the free YouTube app first. If the television lacks a supported app, choose hardware according to your priority: a Google TV device for the deepest Google-library integration, Roku for a simple interface, Fire TV for an Amazon-centered setup, or Apple TV for an Apple/AirPlay household. Hardware prices and availability change, so check the manufacturer’s current store. Movies Anywhere is a free cross-service option in the United States for eligible movies, not a universal replacement for Google TV or YouTube.

Where did my Google Play Movies go?
The old Google Play Movies & TV destination has been moved across platforms. Use Google TV’s Library, Android TV’s Shop → Your Library, or YouTube’s Library → Your Movies & Shows with the purchasing Google Account.

Can I watch Google Play purchases on Roku or Fire TV?
Yes, when the YouTube app is supported: sign in, open Library, choose Your Movies & Shows or Purchases, and select the title.
Can I watch Google Play movies on Apple TV?
Yes. Use the YouTube app, or use AirPlay from the Google TV app on an iPhone or iPad when both devices support it and share Wi-Fi.
Do I need YouTube Premium?
No. Premium is not required merely to play a purchased movie. Purchased titles can also be downloaded for offline viewing on supported mobile devices without Premium, according to Google’s help page.
