Usually, you can use Disney+ while traveling in a country where the service is available—but you may see that destination’s catalog, not the one at home. Before you leave, download important titles if your plan and device allow it. If you are an EU resident temporarily traveling within the EU, portability rules may preserve your home-country service. A VPN is not a guaranteed or officially supported way to switch catalogs.
First, identify your situation
| Your situation | What to do | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary trip to a country where Disney+ is available | Open Disney+ normally after arrival. | The available catalog may differ from home. |
| Temporary trip within the EU as an EU resident | Sign in normally; EU portability rules may apply. | You must meet the residence and temporary-travel conditions. |
| Moving permanently | Check Disney+ availability and local signup terms in your new country. | A travel arrangement does not settle eligibility, billing, or local service terms. |
| Trying to watch a different country’s catalog from home | Check local availability or lawful purchase and rental options. | A VPN may be detected, may fail, and may conflict with Disney’s agreement. |
Disney says subscribers traveling abroad can stream content available in the country or region where they are located, and recommends downloading titles before travel. Availability is limited to supported countries and regions; a subscription from one country is not a promise of its full catalog everywhere. See Disney+ location and availability guidance.
How to use Disney+ on a temporary trip
Before you leave
- Check that Disney+ is offered in your destination.
- Update the Disney+ app and your device’s operating system, then sign in while you still have a reliable connection.
- For any title you need during the trip, check whether the app offers a download option under your plan.
- Download it over Wi-Fi, open the Downloads section to confirm it appears, then test playback with Wi-Fi and mobile data turned off.
- Make sure you can access the account email and its recovery method.
After you arrive
- Connect to local Wi-Fi or mobile data and open the Disney+ app or website normally.
- If Disney+ asks you to confirm that you are away from home, follow the prompt if you are genuinely traveling.
- Search for the title. The catalog may reflect your destination rather than your home country.
- If the title is missing, try a valid download made before departure or check lawful local viewing options.
- If Disney+ will not connect, check whether it is available in the country and use the Error 73 steps below if that message appears.
The country you are in and the connection Disney+ detects matter; hotel Wi-Fi does not itself switch you to a home catalog. Prefer a trusted hotel network or your own mobile data, and avoid entering credentials on suspicious captive portals.
Downloads: the best backup for a specific title
A download can help when a title is unavailable in the destination catalog or your connection is unreliable, but it is not a permanent guarantee. Whether it is available depends on the plan, title, device, app status, and Disney’s current rules. Disney’s U.S. pricing page lists downloads as a Premium-plan feature and says that plan supports downloads on up to 10 devices; that is a U.S.-specific plan detail, not a worldwide rule. Check Disney+ plan and download information for your market.

If a downloaded title will not play, possible causes include an app or account verification requirement, title or plan restrictions, device storage, or an app that needs updating. Reconnect to the internet, update the app, check the account and available storage, and contact Disney+ support if it still fails. Do not assume every download remains playable for the whole trip.
What changes when you cross a border?
Disney says some content may be available in many places, while particular titles can be unavailable in selected countries or regions. A show you watch at home may therefore disappear from search abroad. Language and subtitle choices, content hubs, and live programming may also differ. Disney’s availability guidance does not establish a title-by-title reason for each difference, so check the destination catalog rather than assuming why a title is missing.

Plans, bundles, add-ons, eligibility, features, restrictions, and device availability can vary by territory under Disney’s subscriber agreement. Live sports and other live programming may have additional location, rights, blackout, plan, or device restrictions; ordinary on-demand access does not guarantee that a live event will work abroad.
EU portability: when your home service may travel with you
Paid online-content subscriptions generally have portability protections when an EU resident temporarily travels to another EU country. For eligible subscribers, the service should generally provide the same content, devices, users, and functionality under the same conditions as at home, without an extra charge just because of the temporary trip. The framework also covers travel to Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein under the applicable European Economic Area arrangements.

This is not a general right for everyone visiting Europe. In particular, a U.S. subscriber traveling in Europe should not assume these rules preserve a U.S. catalog. The provider may verify residence using permitted information such as payment details, address, or identification. Read the EU’s online-content portability guidance for the applicable residence and travel conditions.
How to fix Disney+ Error 73
Disney identifies two possible causes: trying to access the service from a country where it is unavailable, or using a VPN or IP anonymizer. Its official guidance is to access Disney+ from a supported country or disable the VPN or anonymizer.

- Turn off any VPN or IP anonymizer.
- Close and reopen the Disney+ app or browser.
- If the message remains, restart the device.
- Check that your internet connection works, then try again.
- Confirm that Disney+ is offered in the country where you are physically located.
- If the error persists in a supported country without a VPN, contact Disney+ support about Error 73.
Disney’s instructions do not recommend cycling through VPN servers. A VPN provider’s troubleshooting suggestions do not change Disney’s own guidance or terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a VPN change your Disney+ country?
Sometimes a VPN may change the apparent location of a connection, but it is neither reliable nor an officially supported Disney+ catalog switch. Disney lists VPNs and IP anonymizers among possible Error 73 causes. Its agreement also prohibits using technology or techniques to obscure or disguise your location and says Disney may restrict, suspend, or terminate access for agreement violations. That does not mean every VPN use inevitably results in account action; it does mean you should not treat catalog circumvention as a dependable or risk-free feature.

- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
Using a VPN for general privacy on public Wi-Fi is a different purpose from trying to disguise your location to obtain another catalog. A VPN does not guarantee Disney+ playback in either case. VPN providers themselves acknowledge limitations: ExpressVPN’s Disney+ guidance advises connecting to a server location matching the country where you are physically located, while NordVPN’s support page notes that Disney+ may not work while connected and warns users to follow applicable terms and law.
If you have moved permanently
A permanent move is different from a short trip. Check whether Disney+ is available in your new country and consult its local signup and support information about eligibility, billing, and account arrangements. Disney’s agreement makes service access subject to the applicable territory and says plan features and eligibility can differ. Do not assume that changing a phone’s region, changing app language, or changing billing details will switch the catalog; those actions are not a guaranteed country-change setting.
Travel access also does not automatically authorize sharing an account with someone who lives elsewhere. Disney’s agreement defines a household around devices associated with the primary personal residence and restricts sharing outside it unless the applicable tier permits it. A person traveling, a household member using the account elsewhere, and a permanent resident of another country are different cases.
When Disney+ is unavailable at your destination
If the service has not launched where you are, streaming may be blocked. Check Disney’s availability information, and use a pre-trip download if it remains valid and your plan and device permit playback. Otherwise, look for a licensed local streaming service, rental, or purchase option, or contact Disney+ support about your account. A VPN is not Disney’s recommended workaround for an unsupported country.
