If the old VRV website or app will not open, it is not an ordinary service outage to fix: VRV has been folded into Crunchyroll. Use Crunchyroll or its current app, then troubleshoot any sign-in or playback problem there. The useful distinction is whether you are trying to reach retired VRV or a current Crunchyroll feature that is failing.
Is VRV down, or has it been discontinued?
Crunchyroll announced on March 1, 2022, that VRV would be unified under the Crunchyroll brand as part of a single subscription service. The announcement is at Crunchyroll’s transition announcement. Current official materials direct viewers to Crunchyroll apps and activation rather than VRV. In practice, an old VRV app or website that no longer loads is not something a cache clear or reinstall of that legacy app is likely to restore.
May 3, 2023 is commonly reported as VRV’s shutdown date in community posts, but that date is not established here by a current first-party shutdown notice. The key point for troubleshooting is that VRV is not the supported destination now.
Move to Crunchyroll and check the right account
- Open Crunchyroll in a browser or install the current Crunchyroll app from your device’s official app store.
- Sign in using the email address you associated with VRV or its migration. If you have more than one email address, try the likely account before creating another one.
- If needed, use Crunchyroll’s password-reset option. Once signed in, check whether the account shows an active membership before purchasing anything.
- If your existing device cannot install or run the current app, check Crunchyroll’s supported-device information at the activation page before replacing hardware.
Do not assume every historical VRV feature moved identically. A 2017 Crunchyroll account-linking FAQ said linking primarily confirmed Premium status and did not transfer usernames or watchlists; it is historical guidance, not proof of how every later migration record was handled. Activate Crunchyroll on a TV, console, or streaming device
For supported devices that show a code option, Crunchyroll’s activation page currently describes a six-character code flow. Its device list includes platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung TV, LG TV, Vizio, Vidaa, Philips, and Nintendo Switch; availability can change by device and region.
- Open the Crunchyroll app on the device and choose Log In or Log in with a Code (the label can vary).
- Note the six-character activation code displayed on the screen.
- On a phone or computer, open crunchyroll.com/activate and make sure the browser is signed in to the intended Crunchyroll account.
- Enter the code and complete the on-screen confirmation. The device needs an internet connection and a current version of the app.
If activation fails, generate a fresh code, check that it has not expired, update and restart the app, and verify the browser account. If code activation is unavailable, use email-and-password sign-in if offered. You can also review or remove stale sessions under Settings → Device Management; labels may vary with locale and account state.

If Crunchyroll will not load in a browser
- Open another website. If that also fails, investigate the device’s connection before treating it as a Crunchyroll problem.
- Try another browser and update the one that fails.
- Temporarily disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, VPNs, and proxies. These can affect login or video even when the site itself opens.
- Sign out and back in. If the issue remains, clear Crunchyroll site data, restart the browser, and test again.
- Try another network, such as mobile data. If Crunchyroll works there but not on Wi-Fi, check the router, filtering, firewall, or ISP connection.
A third-party outage checker can be a clue, but it does not establish the cause of an individual failure. Compare another device or network before concluding the service is down.
If the Crunchyroll app crashes, freezes, or buffers
- Force-close the app, then restart the phone, TV, console, or streaming device.
- Install available updates for both the app and the device’s operating system.
- Clear the app cache if the device offers that control, then sign out and back in. Menu names and cache controls differ by platform.
- If the app still fails, reinstall the current Crunchyroll app from the official store and confirm there is enough device storage.
- Test another network and, if possible, another supported device to separate a local connection or compatibility issue from a title-specific problem.
TV instructions are platform-specific. For example, Crunchyroll’s Hisense VIDAA guide recommends checking connectivity, restarting, updating or reinstalling the app, clearing cache or data, closing other apps, and checking system updates. That guide says VIDAA U6 is required and VIDAA U4 and U5 are unsupported; do not apply its menu instructions to every television.

Do not sideload an old VRV APK or treat an unofficial build as a normal repair. It cannot restore the retired service and may introduce security or account risks.
If video fails or shows a DRM error
First test another episode or title. Note whether the failure affects one title, one device, one browser, or everything, and whether the video, subtitles, or audio is the part that fails. A single-title failure may reflect availability or a title-specific issue rather than a general app fault.

Crunchyroll identifies DRM-related errors including MED, SHAK-6*-GENERIC, and SHAK-6*DRM. Its DRM troubleshooting guidance recommends updating the browser, enabling protected-content playback, and disabling extensions, VPNs, or proxies that may interfere. Protected-content controls differ between browser versions, so use the current help for your specific browser rather than relying on an old menu path. If the problem persists, test another supported browser or device.
If your former VRV Premium access is missing
- Sign in to Crunchyroll with the email address associated with your VRV account or migration, rather than immediately opening a new account.
- Use the official password-reset flow if you cannot access that account.
- Check the account’s membership status and payment history. If you paid through an app store or another billing provider, verify the subscription with that provider as well.
- Review Settings → Device Management and remove unfamiliar or stale devices. If you suspect someone accessed the account, change its password and follow Crunchyroll’s account-security guidance.
- If the membership is still missing, contact Crunchyroll Support with the former VRV email, proof of payment or subscription confirmation, screenshots, and the exact error.
A missing Premium entitlement can result from using the wrong account, a billing issue, an expired membership, or a migration mismatch. Verify whether an existing membership is active before buying another plan; a new purchase will not repair an app, browser, network, or DRM fault.

If only one show or episode is unavailable
Try another episode and record the affected title, season, episode, language, device, and exact error. Catalog rights vary by country, so a title missing from your Crunchyroll catalog is not necessarily a playback or account failure. Crunchyroll’s historical VRV documentation described VRV as U.S.-only; present-day Crunchyroll catalog and device availability also vary by region. A VPN can complicate regional licensing, authentication, and DRM, so it is not a reliable fix and should not be used to bypass licensing restrictions.
What not to try
- Do not keep reinstalling the obsolete VRV app in the hope of restoring the service.
- Do not buy another subscription until you have checked the account and billing provider for an existing membership.
- Do not use a VPN as a default playback fix; it can make regional or DRM errors harder to diagnose.
- Do not give your password or payment details to unofficial support accounts or login pages. Use Crunchyroll’s official site and support channel.
What to send Crunchyroll Support
A concise report helps support distinguish an account problem from a device, network, title, or DRM issue. Include:
- The exact error text and a screenshot, if available.
- The title and episode, and whether other titles work.
- Device make and model, operating-system version, and Crunchyroll app version; for a browser problem, browser name and version.
- Your country or region, and whether the issue also occurs on another network or device.
- The account email (never the password) and, if Premium is missing, a billing receipt or subscription confirmation.
