To watch BBC iPlayer on a phone, install the official BBC iPlayer app for iPhone or Android app, sign in with a BBC account and choose a programme. BBC Help currently lists iOS 16.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later as requirements. In the UK, a valid TV Licence is required to watch or download programmes on iPlayer. BBC iPlayer is a UK-only service; the international BBC app and BBC.com are different products.
What you need before you start
- An iPhone or Android phone that can run a supported operating system. BBC Help lists iOS 16.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later; store and device compatibility can also affect installation. Check BBC’s current supported-device guidance.
- Internet access by Wi-Fi or mobile data, unless you are watching an eligible programme already downloaded in the app.
- A BBC account to sign in and use account features such as watch history and a watchlist.
- If you are watching or downloading BBC programmes on iPlayer in the UK, TV Licence coverage. A BBC account does not replace a TV Licence.
- Available phone storage if you plan to download programmes.
How to watch BBC iPlayer on an iPhone
- Open the App Store and search for BBC iPlayer. Check that the publisher is the BBC, or use the official UK App Store listing. Avoid similarly named unofficial apps.
- Tap Get or the download button and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your Apple Account password if asked.
- Open BBC iPlayer and choose Sign in. Enter the email address and password for your BBC account, then complete any verification prompt. If you cannot sign in, use the account-recovery option.
- Browse the home screen or categories, use Search, or look through the live schedule. Open a programme and episode, then tap Play.
To check the iOS version, open Settings → General → About → iOS Version. If the phone is below iOS 16.1, check for an available iOS update. A phone that cannot update may be able to use BBC services in Safari, but browser access is not a guaranteed substitute for the iPlayer app and does not necessarily provide its download features.
How to watch BBC iPlayer on an Android phone
- Open Google Play Store and search for BBC iPlayer. Confirm that the publisher is the BBC, or use the official UK Google Play listing.
- Tap Install, then open the app when installation finishes.
- Choose Sign in, enter your BBC account details and complete any security check. Use account recovery if needed.
- Browse or search for a title, open the programme and episode you want, then tap Play.
BBC Help lists Android 7.0 or later. To check your version, look under Settings → About phone or About device; labels vary by manufacturer. Meeting the version requirement does not guarantee that every phone or Play Store account will be compatible.
What signing in does—and does not do
Signing in lets iPlayer associate viewing with your BBC account. The iPhone listing describes features including watch progress, watchlists and recommendations that can be used across supported devices. The official iPhone listing provides the current feature description. Signing in is separate from TV Licence coverage: an account is not proof that you are licensed to watch or download iPlayer programmes in the UK.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How to download programmes for offline viewing
- In the iPlayer app, open the programme or episode page.
- If a Download button or download icon is available, tap it and wait for the download to finish. The app may ask you to keep it open.
- When offline, open the app’s Downloads section and select the saved programme.
Download availability depends on the programme’s rights, and downloaded video uses phone storage. Downloads are kept within the iPlayer app, not saved as ordinary video files, and may expire when their availability window ends. A download is not a permanent copy. The iPhone and Android listings advertise offline viewing. A TV Licence is required to download BBC programmes on iPlayer in the UK.
Using mobile data, Wi-Fi and casting
Streaming over mobile data
You can stream over mobile data when your connection and plan allow it, but video can use a substantial amount of data. The amount varies with playback quality and viewing conditions, so check your phone’s data controls and carrier allowance rather than relying on a fixed estimate. Wi-Fi is usually the safer choice for long programmes and downloads. A weak cellular signal can cause buffering or interrupted downloads.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Casting to a television
The iPhone listing advertises Apple AirPlay and Chromecast, and the Android listing advertises Chromecast. To cast, start playback and look for the AirPlay or cast icon; select a compatible television or receiving device. The phone and receiver generally need to be on the same local network. The icon may not appear if the receiver is incompatible or cannot be discovered. Support does not extend to every television or device, and casting does not change iPlayer’s UK availability or TV Licence rules.
Do you need a TV Licence to watch on a phone?
Yes. TV Licensing says a TV Licence is needed to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer in the UK, whether you use a phone, tablet, computer or television. This includes live viewing and watching programmes later on demand. See TV Licensing’s BBC iPlayer guidance for the applicable rules. The requirement is about what you watch or download, not which device you use.

Can you watch BBC iPlayer outside the UK?
BBC iPlayer is officially available only in the UK. BBC Help says iPlayer is not included in the BBC.com subscription, and the international BBC app and BBC.com are separate services with different content and access rules. A UK TV Licence or BBC account does not make iPlayer available worldwide. BBC Help explains the distinction.
TV Licensing says you cannot currently stream or download programmes on iPlayer while abroad. Programmes downloaded before leaving the UK may remain playable for a limited time; TV Licensing gives 30 days after a programme was shown live as a usual example, not a guarantee for every title. Check each programme’s availability and expiry before travel. TV Licensing’s travel guidance covers this distinction. BBC terms prohibit streaming or downloading iPlayer TV programmes outside the UK, so a VPN should not be treated as an official, reliable or authorised way around the restriction. BBC Terms of Use.

Why BBC iPlayer may not appear in your app store
The country or region attached to your Apple App Store or Google Play account can affect which app appears, even if your physical location is different. Other causes include an unsupported operating system, device or account restrictions, or searching for the wrong app. BBC Help recommends checking the store account’s country or region settings. Changing a store region can affect other account services, so do not do so casually. BBC’s installation guidance.
In the United States and other countries, a BBC app may be available without providing access to the UK iPlayer catalogue. BBC.com and its international app are separate, commercially funded services; content and access can vary by location. BBC Help explains why a UK licence payer may still see a BBC.com paywall abroad. If you cannot install iPlayer, BBC.com in a mobile browser may provide international BBC content, but it is not a substitute for iPlayer and does not bypass its location limits.

Fix common BBC iPlayer problems on a phone
- The app will not install: check the phone’s OS version, the app-store account region and the official publisher listing. If the device cannot meet the supported OS requirement, app installation may not be possible.
- A programme will not play: check the connection, confirm you are in the UK, close and reopen the app, and see whether the title is still available. Try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, or the reverse, to isolate a network problem.
- Playback buffers or stops: move to a stronger Wi-Fi or mobile signal, then restart the app. A BBC-side outage is also possible; a single playback error does not identify its cause.
- A download fails: check available storage and connection quality, and confirm that the title offers downloads. Try Wi-Fi for a large download.
- Sign-in appears stuck: verify the account email and password, complete any security prompt, or use account recovery. Signing out and back in may help if authentication is stalled.
- Casting does not work: check that the receiver supports AirPlay or Chromecast as appropriate, both devices are on the same network, and the receiver is available for discovery. Not all combinations of phone, app and television are supported.
- A saved programme is gone or will not play: its download or rights window may have ended. Search the title in iPlayer to see whether another episode or version remains available.
- You plan to reinstall the app: reinstalling can remove local app data and downloaded programmes, particularly on iPhone. Do this only after accounting for downloads you still need.
For Android, clearing the app cache may help with some app faults, but the menu varies by manufacturer. Restarting the phone and updating iPlayer through its app store are sensible first checks.
Why a BBC programme may be missing
BBC broadcasts do not all remain on iPlayer for the same period. Availability can depend on rights agreements, expiry dates, regional variations, live-event restrictions and whether download rights exist separately from streaming rights. Search for the title in the app and check its programme page; do not assume a broadcast will stay available for a fixed number of days. Some international BBC content may be on BBC.com rather than iPlayer, while UK iPlayer programmes are not thereby available abroad.
Is BBC iPlayer a separate paid subscription?
For UK viewers, iPlayer is not the BBC.com subscription product; the relevant legal requirement for watching or downloading BBC programmes on iPlayer is TV Licence coverage. A BBC.com subscription in the United States does not unlock iPlayer. The apps are distributed through the official app stores, but app availability or store presentation should not be confused with a subscription that grants worldwide iPlayer access. BBC Help details what the BBC.com subscription does not include.
