Watch the X-Men movies in release order: begin with X-Men (2000) and finish with Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). It is the most coherent first-time route through a franchise shaped by prequels, time travel and alternate realities.
If you are watching the X-Men films for the first time, use release order. It is the clearest way to follow the introductions, returning characters, callbacks and crossovers across the complete 14-film run.

Why release order works best
The X-Men films do not have one simple, official chronological path. There are prequels, recast younger versions of familiar characters, time travel, altered history and, later, cross-reality storytelling. X-Men: Days of Future Past is the major turning point: it brings together characters from the original trilogy and their younger First Class counterparts in a story that changes history.

That makes release order more useful than trying to solve every continuity question before you begin. You see each reveal and change in the order audiences originally received it. It also gives Deadpool & Wolverine its proper context after Deadpool and Deadpool 2.

Optional approximate story order
If you have already seen the movies, or prefer to start with the earlier-set stories, this is a reasonable approximate route. It is editorial guidance, not an official canon timeline:
- X-Men: First Class
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
- X-Men
- X2
- X-Men: The Last Stand
- The Wolverine
- X-Men: Days of Future Past
After Days of Future Past, it is more honest to think in branches and character-led follow-ups than to force every title into one uninterrupted line:
- X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix continue the younger-character strand.
- Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are the character-led Deadpool follow-ups.
- The New Mutants is a spin-off feature.
- Logan is best watched after the earlier Wolverine and X-Men films, even if its relationship to the revised continuity is not neatly fixed.
- Deadpool & Wolverine comes last after the first two Deadpool films and benefits from familiarity with the wider X-Men screen legacy.
Ratings and family-watch warning
Deadpool, Deadpool 2 and Logan are rated R in the United States. They are substantially more explicit in language, violence and adult material than the rest of this guide. The other listed 20th Century X-Men films are generally rated PG-13.
Rank #2
For a family-friendly selection, do not assume the Deadpool films fit simply because they share characters and comic-book DNA with the X-Men movies. Check the local rating and your streaming service’s parental-control settings before choosing a title.
Where to watch the X-Men movies
Check Disney+ and local digital-store listings in your country before starting. Catalogue rights, versions and parental-control settings vary by territory and change over time. Disney+ availability in one country is not a guarantee that every X-Men film is available there—or that it is available in another country.
If you prefer physical media, search for X-Men 3-Film Collection Blu-ray. It contains only the original trilogy: X-Men, X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand. It is not a complete franchise collection. For the newest film, look for Deadpool & Wolverine on digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray or DVD, subject to local availability.
Optional reading after the films
Want the comic-book background behind two of the franchise’s biggest story touchstones? Marvel’s facsimile editions of X-Men (1963) #131–142 cover the material associated with the Dark Phoenix Saga and “Days of Future Past.” They are a useful read-next option, not required preparation for the films.

What is not on this list
This guide covers feature films only. Television series such as Legion, The Gifted and X-Men ’97 are separate viewing projects and are not necessary to complete the 14-movie order above. Likewise, the full Fox-era X-Men run is not ordinary MCU viewing homework: Deadpool & Wolverine is the relevant Marvel Studios crossover, but this list is primarily an X-Men film guide.

Do the Deadpool and Wolverine movies count as X-Men movies?
No. A complete movie watch-through also includes the Wolverine films, the Deadpool films and The New Mutants, for 14 feature films in total.
Should I watch X-Men in release order or chronological order?
Release order is the better first-watch choice. The films use prequels, altered history and cross-reality stories, so there is no single uncomplicated chronological order.
