Verify a VPS video archive in three separate ways: compare each uploaded file’s SHA-256 checksum with its source, use ffprobe to inspect whether the media container and streams can be recognized, then test playback through the actual serving path on a client. The first two checks do not prove the file is playable over your streaming setup.
1. Compare each file with its source using SHA-256
A checksum comparison checks whether the destination file is byte-for-byte identical to the particular source file you hashed. Generate a digest for each original before transfer, then generate one for the corresponding file on the VPS. GNU Coreutils documents checksum generation and checking, including SHA-2 algorithms, as a way to check for file corruption: GNU Coreutils 9.11 checksum documentation.

On the machine holding the originals, calculate a SHA-256 digest for every archive file. Save the output with the file names and paths so each digest can be matched to its source.

On the VPS, calculate SHA-256 for the uploaded counterparts. Ensure the comparison pairs the intended source and destination files; matching names alone are not enough if paths or archive contents differ.

Compare each pair of digest values. A match supports byte-for-byte identity for the files compared. If a digest differs, do not mark that destination as verified: confirm paths and names, then re-upload or investigate the transfer before proceeding.
A matching digest does not establish that the source itself was complete, valid, or playable. It establishes only that the destination matches the source used in the comparison.
2. Inspect the media with ffprobe
Use ffprobe to check whether FFmpeg can open each file as multimedia input and to inspect its container and streams. Its documentation covers container and stream information, structured output, error reporting, and version reporting: FFmpeg ffprobe documentation.

Run
ffprobeagainst each destination file and review the reported format and streams. Confirm that the output identifies the media components you expect, such as video and audio streams where applicable.Recommended Free Tools

For results you need to save or process automatically, request machine-readable output and retain it alongside the file’s checksum record. The documentation describes structured output options; select a format appropriate to your workflow.

Use ffprobe’s error-reporting options when diagnosing failures. The tool returns a positive exit code when an input cannot be opened or recognized as multimedia. Treat that as a failed probe to investigate, not as a successful verification.

3. Test playback through the real streaming path
Checksums and probing answer different questions from an end-to-end playback test. A checksum compares file contents; ffprobe reports what the media tool can identify. Neither verifies server permissions, URL reachability, application configuration, or whether a client can play the video.

Open that actual URL or stream using a representative client, rather than relying only on a local file path or a successful probe.

Confirm that the client can reach and play the media as expected. If playback fails, investigate the serving path and client behavior separately from the checksum and probe results.
4. Keep an audit record
For each file, retain the source and VPS paths, file names, checksum algorithm and values, ffprobe output, tool versions, and timestamps. GNU Coreutils documents generating and checking digest records, while ffprobe supports structured output and version reporting; keeping these together makes it possible to see what was compared and inspected.
