Choose one output frame rate for the OBS stream or recording based on its destination, the motion you want, and what your computer can render and encode reliably. Do not try to make one output contain several simultaneous frame rates just because playlist clips differ. Start with 30 fps for general-purpose material; consider 60 fps when smoother motion matters and your system can sustain it, then check a short test recording.
Choose the output rate for the finished video
In OBS, Common FPS Value is an output setting, not a command to match each playlist item independently. OBS’s overview guide says it should match the desired output FPS, giving 30 and 60 as examples: OBS Quick Start Guide.
First check any frame-rate requirement from the streaming destination, recording workflow, or downstream editor. If there is no specified requirement, decide based on the material’s motion and test whether OBS remains stable at the chosen rate.
When 30 fps is a sound starting point
For talking, slides, and many general-purpose streams, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point. It asks the system to render and encode fewer frames than 60 fps, which can help if performance is limited.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to try 60 fps
Use 60 fps when smoother motion is important and the full workflow can handle it. OBS cautions that 60-fps streaming can be more taxing than 30-fps streaming; if 60 fps is not working, its performance guide advises dropping to 30: OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Keep integer and fractional rates distinct
Rates that look nearly alike are not interchangeable: 24, 25, 30, and 60 fps differ from 23.976, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. In OBS’s Windows DirectShow rate list, fractional rates include 30000/1001 (about 29.97) and 60000/1001 (about 59.94): OBS DirectShow Video reference.

If the source or destination specification calls for fractional timing, choose the corresponding fractional option when it is available. OBS’s interface, available choices, device drivers, and destination rules can vary by operating system, OBS version, and hardware, so verify the setting in your own installation and check device support in its properties.
Test mixed-rate playlist clips before going live
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist, provided VLC is installed: OBS Media Sources guide. Keep the OBS output rate fixed while checking how representative clips look at that cadence. OBS forum discussion and a developer response describe synchronization intent for certain sources, including Media Source and Video Capture Device, but do not specify a universal drop, duplication, or interpolation pattern for every file and playlist: OBS forum discussion about media-source FPS.

Short test checklist
- Make a short local recording using the output FPS you plan to use.
- Include the playlist clip with the lowest frame rate, the one with the highest frame rate, and any clip from a different integer or fractional rate family.
- Watch the transitions as well as the clips themselves. Look for visible judder or repeated frames, check that audio stays in sync, and confirm OBS maintains stable output.
- If the result is not satisfactory, try another output rate and make another short sample before committing to a long stream or recording.
Do not confuse capture-device FPS with output FPS
A camera or capture card’s FPS is an input setting; OBS’s output cadence is selected separately in video settings. A device may not support every rate its controls appear to offer, so check the device’s own properties and documentation rather than assuming its input can use the output rate: OBS Video Capture Devices guide.
Account for destination-specific rules
Some delivery formats have additional cadence guidance. Apple’s HLS authoring specification says inserted media should be at a similar frame rate—x, 2x, or x/2—as other content in the same Media Playlist. That is HLS-specific guidance, not a universal OBS playlist rule: Apple HLS Authoring Specification for Apple Devices.

If OBS cannot hold the chosen rate
- Lower the output FPS. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps, as OBS recommends.
- Simplify the scene. Reduce unnecessary sources or visual processing so OBS has less work to render.
- Reduce output resolution if needed. This can reduce the workload without changing the clips themselves.
- Retest after each change. Check motion, audio sync, and output stability with the same representative playlist sections.
