YouTube end screens appear in the closing seconds of eligible videos—not during an ongoing live broadcast. To guide viewers from a 24/7 stream to more documentaries, first check whether YouTube has produced an eligible video archive; if so, add an end screen in YouTube Studio that links to a video or playlist. If the broadcast is actually ending and you want to send viewers to another live event or Premiere, YouTube Live Redirect is a separate option.
Can an end screen appear while a 24/7 stream is live?
No. YouTube describes end screens as elements added to a video’s ending. They can appear in the last 5–20 seconds, and the video must be at least 25 seconds long. They are not a way to place a clickable video recommendation over a broadcast that is still running.
For a continuous stream, the unresolved question is what archive YouTube creates. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that guidance does not establish whether or how a 24/7 broadcast is divided into archived videos, or whether any resulting archive can accept an end screen. Check the stream and any archive in YouTube Studio; use the end-screen workflow below only if an eligible video is available. See YouTube’s end-screen instructions and live encoder guidance.
Add an end screen to an eligible video
- Open the video in Studio. In YouTube Studio, select Content, choose the eligible archived or uploaded video, then open Editor > End screen.
- Choose the destination. Add a Video element to feature a specific documentary or follow-up video. You can also choose a playlist, let YouTube select a video suited to the viewer, or feature your most recent upload.
- Set timing and placement. Keep the element within the final 5–20 seconds. Adjust its timing and position so it is visible without obscuring important closing material.
- Preview and save. Apply a template if useful, preview how the end screen looks, make any adjustments, and save.
Make the call to action match what viewers will reach—for example, invite them to continue with a related documentary or a playlist on the same subject. An end screen offers a route to another video; it does not guarantee that viewers will click.

Choose the right end-screen element and check availability
For a standard 16:9 video, YouTube allows up to four end-screen elements. Besides videos and playlists, available element types include subscribe, channel promotion, and—in eligible cases—an external website link for YouTube Partner Program creators. Choose only the elements that serve the next step you want viewers to take.
End screens do not appear in every viewing context. YouTube lists unavailable apps and formats, excludes Made for Kids videos, and lets viewers hide end screens. The display can also differ from the design based on performance, viewer behavior, device, and context. These limitations mean a carefully placed element may not be shown to every viewer.

Measure clicks and refine the destination
After viewers have had an opportunity to watch the video, check end-screen element click-rate reporting in YouTube Analytics. You can review a video’s Engagement tab and channel reports comparing element types and videos. Use those observations to decide whether to change the linked video, playlist, or layout; YouTube’s reporting measures your channel’s behavior rather than promising a particular lift in views.
When Live Redirect is a better fit
If the goal is to move viewers as a live stream ends—not while a 24/7 broadcast continues—consider YouTube Live Redirect. It can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream, subject to YouTube’s eligibility and permission requirements. You need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; redirecting viewers to another channel’s stream requires that channel’s permission. This is distinct from an end screen: its destination is a Premiere or live stream, rather than a video or playlist element at the end of an eligible video.

YouTube’s Live Redirect guide recommends setting up the Premiere first and telling viewers to wait a few seconds for the screen to reload. Check YouTube’s current requirements before relying on the feature.
