Use YouTube Studio when you need scheduling or more event settings; use Stream Now when you want vMix to reuse the same stream setup on later broadcasts. The steps below follow vMix’s overview, last updated April 9, 2025, and its version-specific Help 29 User Guide.
Choose where to create the YouTube stream

These are different workflows, not a universal better-versus-worse choice. For scheduled productions, start in YouTube Studio. For a recurring broadcast where you want to reuse stream settings, Stream Now may be more convenient. See vMix’s YouTube Live overview for the two documented routes.
Create or schedule an event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live event using your channel’s current YouTube Live interface.
- Open that event’s stream settings and locate its stream key and, if you are configuring a custom destination, the server URL provided by YouTube.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your event. Do not paste it into public messages or examples.
- In vMix, open the Streaming settings and select the YouTube destination if available, or choose Custom RTMP Server and enter the destination URL and stream key exactly as YouTube provides them.
- Choose the quality profile and encoder, then start the stream in vMix. Check YouTube Studio to confirm that the incoming feed appears and proceed with the event using the controls shown there.
YouTube’s interface and account-specific requirements can change. Use the current event’s stream settings and on-screen status for the destination details and any eligibility or ingest requirements; the vMix sources cited here do not establish current YouTube eligibility rules or a universal platform bitrate limit.
Create the broadcast with vMix Stream Now
Choose this path if you want vMix to create the YouTube Live Stream Now broadcast rather than first building a scheduled event in Studio. In vMix’s Streaming settings, select the YouTube Live Stream Now provider and follow the account connection and stream setup prompts shown in your installed version. Select quality and encoder, then start the stream. vMix’s overview says this route can reuse the same stream for later broadcasts without changing YouTube stream settings each time.

Because labels and account authorization flows are version-dependent, follow the prompts in your vMix release rather than relying on screenshots from another version. If scheduling or more event configuration is important, use the Studio-created route instead.
Set the destination and start from vMix
- In the vMix main window, open the cog next to the Stream control to open Streaming settings.
- Select YouTube or YouTube Live Stream Now for the provider route, or select Custom RTMP Server when entering a provider’s URL and stream key manually.
- For a custom server, paste the destination URL and stream key/name from the provider. Check for missing characters, extra spaces, or values copied from a different event.
- Select a quality profile and encoder that suit the production and your available upload connection.
- Start streaming. If vMix reports an error shortly after startup, first compare the selected destination and its URL/key values with the provider’s current settings.
- If you need more connection detail while streaming, open View Status in vMix and inspect its technical information.
The vMix Help 29 User Guide describes FFMPEG as included with vMix and supporting H.264 video and AAC audio in its getting-started material. Prefer the current workflow for your installed version; older instructions for Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder should not be treated as the default for current setup. Consult the vMix Help 29 streaming guide for its version-specific controls.

Choose quality for the connection and audience
There is no single vMix quality preset that is right for every YouTube production. Resolution and bitrate affect the data vMix must send, while the program’s content and viewers’ needs influence what quality is appropriate. Pick a profile your connection can sustain rather than selecting the highest available option by default.
- Check YouTube Studio’s current stream settings for the event’s requirements; the sources available for this guide do not establish a current universal YouTube bitrate or resolution recommendation.
- Allow network headroom beyond the stream’s configured bitrate. A connection’s advertised maximum does not guarantee stable upload capacity throughout a live broadcast.
- In vMix quality controls, review configured bitrate, encode size, audio bitrate, and audio format where those options appear. Exact controls may differ by vMix version; the vMix Help 27 quality documentation is older, so verify details in the guide for your installed release.
- Consider what the program contains. A static documentary discussion or a fast-moving multi-camera production may have different image-quality needs, but neither makes one preset mandatory.
Do not infer that a particular upload speed is sufficient from the bitrate alone. Network stability, other traffic, and available headroom matter; validate the connection under the conditions in which you will broadcast.

Understand delay and buffering
The delay configured in vMix is a minimum wait before vMix connects and begins sending the stream, not a promise of total viewer latency. The streaming provider and viewers’ connections and browsers can add delay. vMix’s older Help 27 quality documentation also describes a network buffer that can be increased when the maximum available network speed is unreliable; check your installed version’s documentation before changing a control whose label or behavior may have changed.
When external video needs capture hardware
A capture device is optional production equipment, not a requirement for sending a vMix production to YouTube. You may need a compatible capture device if an external HDMI camera, switcher, or other video source must enter the computer running vMix. Choose hardware based on the computer’s ports, the source’s input format, and the production setup. vMix’s training catalog includes lessons on internal versus external capture devices and equipment basics, but it is not a compatibility list or endorsement of a specific model.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
- vMix errors shortly after you start: Recheck that the selected provider is correct and that the server URL and key match the current YouTube event or provider settings. A key from another event will not target the intended destination.
- YouTube Studio does not show an incoming feed: Confirm that vMix is actually streaming, that the destination details correspond to the event you opened, and that the event is in the expected state in Studio.
- The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: Review the configured quality against sustained upload capacity, reduce the load if needed, and check whether the network buffer control in your vMix version is appropriate for an unreliable connection.
- You need more diagnostic information: With the stream running, open vMix View Status and inspect the technical information. Compare it with the selected destination settings before changing unrelated production inputs.
- A camera or external source is missing from vMix: Diagnose the source path separately from YouTube ingest. Check the source connection and whether your setup requires a compatible capture device; a capture device is not needed when the source already reaches vMix another way.
