Use separate portrait and landscape compositions whenever possible. A 16:9 horizontal scene and a 9:16 vertical scene frame content differently, so one overlay may crop faces, titles, alerts, or other essential details. Choose the platform’s dual-format workflow or configure separate outputs in your broadcast software, then preview both orientations before going live.
Why one overlay may not work in both orientations
Horizontal video is typically framed at 16:9, while vertical video is 9:16. A landscape composition can be center-cropped for portrait viewing, but the crop may cut off important parts of the picture or overlay. Treat the two formats as different compositions, not simply the same scene rotated.
Where the platform or software allows it, make or adjust a dedicated portrait layout. Keep the subject and essential information visible in each view, and check titles, alerts, faces, and other graphics against both canvases. There is no universal safe-zone measurement established here, so preview the actual layouts rather than relying on a fixed margin.

Set up both compositions before going live
- Choose how you will deliver the formats. Decide whether to use the platform’s dual-format feature or a broadcast application configured for portrait and landscape outputs. YouTube documents both Live Control Room editing and third-party encoder use; TikTok LIVE Studio and Twitch each describe their own dual-format workflows.
- Arrange the horizontal scene. Place the main content and overlay elements for landscape viewing. Keep essential information within the composition instead of assuming a later crop will preserve it.
- Create or edit the portrait scene. Preview the 9:16 view and reposition or stack key elements for a phone screen. In YouTube’s documented vertical editor, the choices include center crop, fit-to-phone-width, and stacked; the editing canvas lets creators adjust zoom and position.
- Route the right output. For YouTube third-party encoder setup, select the vertical stream key and check that the intended content and formats go to their corresponding keys.
- Preview both orientations. Check that titles, alerts, faces, and essential visual information remain visible in each. Twitch recommends checking the stream on a phone in portrait and landscape; its guidance also describes using the primary horizontal scene menu to transition linked scenes.
- Confirm what cannot be changed mid-stream. YouTube says vertical format cannot be added after the stream starts. Restream Studio says an active channel’s orientation cannot be changed during a stream. Set up the formats before you begin.
How to decide between cropping and separate layouts
- Use a crop when the important action stays within the cropped area and your platform offers a crop option that frames it adequately.
- Use a fit-to-phone-width or stacked option when YouTube’s vertical choices better preserve the content than a center crop.
- Build a separate portrait composition when the vertical view needs different placement, scale, or stacking to keep the subject and overlay legible.
- Check the full signal path when using an encoder: platform support, software compatibility, output preview, stream-key routing, and whether orientation can still be changed after going live all matter.
