What Is WebRTC? A Guide to Interactive Live Video

WebRTC enables compatible devices to exchange live audio, video, and data. Here’s how its APIs, protocols, signaling, and security considerations fit together.

WebRTC is a set of browser APIs and real-time communication protocols that lets compatible devices exchange audio, video, and application data. It can power interactive calls and conferences, but it is not itself a calling app: each service still needs a way to coordinate connections, and its media path may use additional network resources.

What WebRTC means

WebRTC stands for Web Real-Time Communication. The name refers to technology for real-time communication between browsers and other compatible endpoints—not to one particular app, company, or video service. It supports audio, video, and generic application data. The W3C defines the browser-facing APIs; the IETF describes the protocols used by endpoints to communicate.

The W3C’s WebRTC Recommendation, dated 13 March 2025, defines ECMAScript APIs for sending and receiving media and application data: WebRTC: Real-Time Communication in Browsers. The IETF overview, RFC 8825, describes the related protocol architecture: Overview: Real-Time Protocols for Browser-Based Applications.

What people use WebRTC for

WebRTC is broader than video chat. Eric Rescorla, author of RFC 8826, describes its “major use cases” as “real-time audio and/or video calls, Web conferencing, and direct data transfer.” The statement appears in the IETF’s WebRTC security considerations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Calls: Participants exchange live audio and, when enabled, video.
  • Conferencing: A service coordinates real-time communication among participants.
  • Data transfer: Applications can exchange data, not just audiovisual media.

A webcam is optional: it is a local input device for video capture, not a requirement of WebRTC. A device’s built-in camera may be sufficient, and WebRTC can be used for audio or data without camera video.

How a WebRTC connection is set up

A WebRTC session involves more than opening a camera. The application must arrange connection setup, endpoints must negotiate how to communicate, and the network path must carry the session’s media or data. The signaling mechanism is an application responsibility, not a single built-in WebRTC service.

  1. Choose local inputs if needed. The application can request audio or video from the user’s device. Whether a camera or microphone is needed depends on the use case.
  2. Exchange setup information through signaling. The application uses a service or another communication channel to pass connection setup and control information between participants. This signaling path can be separate from the path that carries media.
  3. Establish a communication path. WebRTC’s protocols are designed to communicate over the most direct path possible between participants. That is a design goal, not a guarantee that every session will be a simple device-to-device connection; real deployments can involve additional network resources.
  4. Exchange media or data. Once the connection is established, the endpoints can send and receive supported real-time media or application data.

Does WebRTC need a server?

WebRTC does not supply one universal signaling server or a complete calling service. An application needs some mechanism to coordinate setup and control information, but that mechanism is chosen and provided by the application. The signaling system and the media path need not be the same system. Network resources may also be involved in a session, so “peer-to-peer” should not be read as a promise that every connection travels directly between two devices without intermediaries.

Is WebRTC secure?

Security depends on more than the WebRTC protocols. The IETF publishes a threat-model document, RFC 8826, and a companion security-architecture document, RFC 8827: WebRTC Security Architecture. These documents provide security considerations for the technology; they do not establish that every application using WebRTC is trustworthy.

  • Consider when an application requests camera or microphone access, and whether that access makes sense for the activity.
  • Evaluate the calling service and the services involved in connection setup; signaling is an application concern.
  • Do not treat encryption alone as proof of the other participant’s identity or as a guarantee that an application is safe.

WebRTC versus a 24/7 YouTube stream

WebRTC is designed for interactive real-time communication such as calls, conferences, and data exchange. A pre-recorded video streamed continuously to YouTube is a different use case: it is a one-way, always-on channel stream, not an interactive WebRTC call.

For a YouTube channel that should keep uploaded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera, and the computer at home can be off. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
