You can ask Siri to play or control Spotify without creating a shortcut: say what you want and add “on Spotify”, as in “Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify.” For a custom spoken phrase or a multi-step routine, use Apple’s Shortcuts app—but the Spotify actions available there can vary by device and app version.
What “Siri Shortcuts on Spotify” means
There are two related ways to use voice control. A direct Siri request asks Spotify to play or control content. An Apple Shortcut is a named workflow you create in Apple’s Shortcuts app, then run by asking Siri for that shortcut by name. You do not need to build a Shortcut for ordinary Spotify playback.
Spotify’s documented command pattern includes “on Spotify.” That phrase helps Siri choose Spotify when more than one audio service could match the request. Spotify lists support for songs, artists, albums, playlists, podcasts, and several playback controls in its Siri and Spotify guide.
What you need
- The Spotify app installed, with the intended account signed in.
- Siri enabled on a device that can activate it, plus an internet connection for Spotify searches and streaming.
- A supported device and software version. Spotify lists iPhone and iPad, iPod touch running iOS 14 or later, Apple Watch running watchOS 6 or later, and AirPlay setups. This is not a promise that every command works identically on each device.
Apple’s guide to using Siri on iPhone explains how to enable and use Siri. Settings labels can shift between operating-system releases, so use the Siri section in Settings rather than relying on an exact menu path from an older version.

Use Siri with Spotify directly
Open Spotify once and confirm you are signed in. Activate Siri using your device’s configured voice or button method, then make a specific request ending with “on Spotify.” Spotify’s examples and supported command categories include:
Play music or podcasts
- “Hey Siri, play [song title] by [artist] on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, play [artist] on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, play the album [album name] on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, play my playlist on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, play [podcast name] on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify.”
Control playback
- “Hey Siri, pause Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, resume Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, skip this song on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, turn up the volume on Spotify.”
- “Hey Siri, what’s playing on Spotify?”
- “Hey Siri, like this song on Spotify.”
These are useful patterns, not a guarantee that every phrase will be interpreted the same way in every language, region, device, or account setup. If a title is ambiguous, add the artist or use the playlist’s exact name.
Create a custom Apple Shortcut for Spotify
Use a custom Shortcut when you want a distinctive phrase or a workflow that combines several actions. Apple says Shortcuts can combine actions across apps and services and can be run by speaking the shortcut’s name. What Spotify can do inside a Shortcut depends on the actions the current app exposes on your device.

- Open the Shortcuts app and tap + to create a shortcut.
- Tap Add Action and search for Spotify.
- If a Spotify action for the task you want appears, add it and configure its available options. Do not assume every account or app version has a “play playlist” action.
- If no suitable Spotify action appears, you can add an action that opens Spotify. Treat that as an app-launch shortcut: opening Spotify alone does not necessarily start a particular song or playlist.
- Give the shortcut a brief, distinctive name, such as Morning Spotify, then run it by saying “Hey Siri, Morning Spotify.”
- Test the shortcut while the device is unlocked and confirm what it actually does before relying on it.
Apple’s Shortcuts User Guide describes creating and running workflows. Apple also notes that a shortcut that opens an app from a locked device may require authentication, and that a name resembling a standard Siri command can cause a conflict; see Use Siri to run shortcuts with your voice.
Add a suggested Spotify action to Siri
Some apps offer Siri suggestions for actions you perform often. If Spotify presents an Add to Siri suggestion, follow the prompt and record a phrase for that action. Apple describes app-provided suggestions in its guide to using Siri with apps on iPhone.
The suggestion may not appear for every user; availability can depend on the app, device, region, and software version. If it is absent, use a direct Siri request or check the Shortcuts action list instead. Apple’s introduction to Shortcuts on iPhone and iPad covers managing shortcuts.

Choose a shortcut name Siri can recognize
- Keep it short and easy to pronounce.
- Choose words that do not sound like a built-in Siri command or another shortcut.
- Use a distinctive phrase rather than a common title such as “Play music.”
If Siri repeatedly misunderstands it, rename the shortcut and test the new phrase. Apple warns that shortcut names resembling standard Siri commands can lead to the shortcut running instead of the standard command.
Troubleshoot common problems
Siri opens Apple Music instead
- End the request with “on Spotify.”
- Use the playlist’s exact name, or specify both song and artist.
- Open Spotify, confirm the right account is signed in, and try again.
Spotify recommends the “on Spotify” phrasing in its Siri support instructions.
Siri says it cannot find Spotify
- Check that Spotify is installed and you are signed in.
- Confirm Siri is enabled and your device meets Spotify’s listed software requirements.
- Include “on Spotify,” update Spotify and the operating system, then restart the device if Siri still does not recognize the app.
The wrong playlist or artist plays
Try the exact playlist name, include the artist, or say “my [name] playlist.” Replace vague requests such as “play Sunday music” with a specific title. On a shared device, check that the active Spotify account is the one whose library contains the intended playlist.

The shortcut opens Spotify but does not start playback
Inspect the shortcut’s actions. If its only action is to open Spotify, it has not been configured to play a track or playlist. If a playback action is present, check that Spotify is signed in, the device is online, and the action still appears and works after app updates. A locked device may require unlocking before a shortcut can open an app.
Audio plays through the wrong speaker or device
A successful Siri response does not guarantee that playback is routed to the output you intended. Open Spotify’s device or output selector and choose the desired speaker, TV, AirPlay destination, or other available device. Do not assume Siri can select every Spotify Connect destination by voice.
Siri misunderstands a shortcut name
Rename it to a short, clearly pronounced phrase that does not overlap with another shortcut or a standard Siri command. Run it once by tapping it in Shortcuts to distinguish a naming problem from an action that is not working.

Use the right approach for your goal

Apple Watch and AirPlay differences
Spotify lists Apple Watch and AirPlay among supported categories, but an iPhone workflow should not be assumed to carry over unchanged. Asking Siri on a watch, controlling playback already in progress, running a synchronized Shortcut, and choosing an output device are separate tasks. Try the specific action on the watch or AirPlay setup you plan to use, and use Spotify’s output selector when you need to change where audio plays.
Apple’s Shortcuts guide also notes that availability of apps, services, and content can vary by country or region. Commands, Siri settings, and app actions may change as Spotify and Apple update their software.
When voice control is not the best option
Use Spotify’s in-app controls when you need to browse or choose an output precisely. For desktop listening, Spotify documents keyboard controls for tasks such as play/pause, next track, search, and queue in its keyboard shortcuts guide. On iPhone or iPad, Apple says shortcuts can also be launched from places such as the Home Screen, Control Center, or an Action button, where supported; see the Shortcuts User Guide.
