The important catch: Spotify’s current Android setup is based on files already on the device, not the old desktop-to-phone Wi-Fi transfer process. Copy your music to Android first, then let Spotify find it.
What “syncing” local files means in Spotify
Spotify’s Local Files feature lets the app play legally obtained audio files stored on your device. It does not upload those files to Spotify, add them to Spotify’s searchable catalog, or automatically make them available on your other devices. Spotify’s Local Files instructions describe playing audio that is already stored on the device.
There are three separate actions:
- Transfer: Copy the audio file to Android using USB, a file manager, or a cloud app’s download command.
- Discover: Enable Local audio files so Spotify can scan files on the device.
- Sync a playlist: Spotify can show the playlist on another device, but that device still needs its own playable copy of each local track.
That distinction explains why a playlist may appear on your phone while one of its local songs is unavailable.
What you need before you start
- An Android phone or tablet with the Spotify app.
- Audio files you are entitled to use, stored locally or ready to transfer.
- Enough free device storage for the files.
- A way to copy or download the files onto Android.
- Permission for Spotify to access audio or media files when Android requests it.
Use common formats such as MP3 first if you are troubleshooting. Spotify does not publish a complete current compatibility list for Android Local Files, so an extension alone—such as .m4a—does not guarantee that a file will play. Codec, container, DRM, and device support can matter. Spotify’s artist-delivery specifications are for music submitted to Spotify, not a definitive guide to files played locally in the Android app.

Transfer music to your Android device
From Windows with USB
- Unlock your Android device and connect it to the computer with a USB cable.
- If Android asks whether to allow access to device data, tap Allow. If needed, select the USB option that permits file transfer.
- On Windows, open the connected device in File Explorer.
- Copy the music into a clearly named folder such as
Music,Download, orSpotify. - Safely eject the device, then disconnect it.
These steps follow Spotify’s transfer instructions for Windows and Android.
From a Mac
Connect the Android device and use an Android file-transfer utility compatible with your current macOS and device setup to copy music into a local folder. Spotify’s instructions refer to an Android file-transfer app and note that a USB cable may be needed; they do not designate one utility as the universal solution.
From cloud storage or another Android app
- Open the cloud-storage or file-management app and locate the audio file.
- Choose Download or the equivalent option.
- Make sure the file is saved on the device, not merely visible in an online-only cloud folder.
- If the app offers a destination, save it in a folder such as
MusicorDownload.
Spotify gives Google Drive as an example of an app from which users can download audio to their device. A cloud file that has not been downloaded is not a local file Spotify can reliably scan.

Turn on Local audio files in Spotify
- Open Spotify on Android.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Apps and devices.
- Turn on Local audio files.
- If Android prompts for access, grant Spotify the relevant media or audio permission.
This is the path in Spotify’s current Local Files instructions. Spotify can change its menus, and Android permission labels differ across versions and manufacturers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind, play, and add the tracks to a playlist
Return to Your Library and open Local Files. Select a track to play it. If you want to combine personal music with Spotify catalog songs, use the three-dot menu beside a local track and choose Add to playlist, then select an existing playlist or create one.
The playlist entry is not the audio file. If you move, rename, or delete the file, Spotify may no longer be able to play that entry. Likewise, a playlist shared with someone else does not give that person your local file; they need their own playable copy on their device.

Can Spotify transfer local files from a computer over Wi-Fi?
Do not rely on the older method that asks you to enable desktop Local Files, put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network, and download a playlist on your phone. Spotify Community guidance says the former cross-device local-file sync method is no longer supported. Spotify’s current Android instructions instead focus on music already stored on the phone. If a tutorial describes the old Wi-Fi process, copy the files directly to Android instead.
You can still use desktop Spotify to find and play files on the computer: open Settings, scroll to Library, turn on Show Local Files, then enable the folders you want or choose Add a source. That desktop setup does not itself put the files on Android.

Play local files offline
When the audio file is physically stored on Android, its audio data does not need to be streamed from Spotify. Playback still depends on Spotify being able to access and decode the file; keeping it in place matters. This is separate from downloading Spotify catalog tracks: Spotify says catalog offline downloads are a Premium feature, and that account must go online at least once every 30 days. Those catalog-download rules do not establish that Premium is required simply to play a user’s local file. See Spotify’s offline-download information.

Troubleshoot missing or unavailable tracks
Local Files is missing or no files appear
- Confirm the files are stored on the phone, not just displayed in a cloud app.
- Check that Local audio files is on in Spotify.
- Open Android Settings → Apps → Spotify → Permissions and allow the relevant media/audio access. The permission name may be Music and audio, Files and media, Storage, or another label.
- Copy one test MP3 into
MusicorDownload, then check whether it appears in Spotify. - Force-close and reopen Spotify. If necessary, turn Local audio files off, restart Spotify, and turn it on again.
- Check whether the Android file manager can see the file and update Spotify and Android if updates are available.
- If the entry was already in a playlist, remove it and add the newly discovered local track again.
Spotify recommends updating the app and device and, if needed, removing local tracks from playlists and restarting setup. A clean reinstall is a last resort: Spotify says downloaded music and podcasts need to be downloaded again afterward, and local tracks may need to be rediscovered or re-added. Keep an original copy of your files outside Spotify’s app storage.
A track appears but is greyed out
First verify that the file still exists on the phone and plays in an Android file player. A grey entry may point to a file moved or renamed, one available only on another device, an online-only cloud file, restricted Android access, DRM protection, or a format Spotify cannot decode.
- Copy the file into
MusicorDownload. - If the filename uses unusual characters, try a simple name with standard characters.
- Toggle Local audio files off and on, then check Local Files again.
- Remove the stale playlist entry and add the newly discovered file.
- If the file still does not play, test a known-good MP3 copy rather than assuming the original extension is supported.
The track works on desktop but not Android
Each device scans its own storage. A file available to Spotify on Windows or Mac has not thereby been copied to your phone. Transfer the same file to Android and enable Local audio files there. Spotify Community guidance likewise notes that the files must be physically present on the devices that need to play them.

The playlist appears, but its local song does not
The playlist structure has synchronized; the underlying audio has not. Copy the track to Android, make sure Spotify discovers it, then add that local copy to the playlist.
The file is in Drive, but Spotify cannot see it
Use Drive’s download command so the audio is stored on the device. A file that is only available online is not equivalent to a downloaded local copy.
When Spotify Local Files may not be the right fit
Spotify Local Files is useful when you want personal tracks alongside catalog songs in Spotify’s interface. For a large local-only collection, folder browsing, extensive codec or metadata controls, or advanced library features, a dedicated Android music player may suit you better. If you want to stream the same library remotely to several devices, a music locker or personal media server is a different option, usually involving separate software and setup. Neither alternative is required for straightforward playback of files stored on Android.
For edge cases, Spotify notes that crossfade between local files works when the files use the same sample rate and channel count, such as mono or stereo.
