For an India-based gaming channel, the documented OBS method is to add a VLC Video source, load the media files into its playlist, and choose whether they play in order or shuffle and loop. OBS can also be controlled with hotkeys or its password-protected WebSocket system. You still need to connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room, test the stream, and make sure you have rights to everything viewers hear and see.
The OBS playlist workflow is not India-specific; the same setup applies elsewhere. The key India-specific consideration supported by YouTube’s guidance is to follow the applicable rules and licensing requirements for the territory where you stream.
What OBS playlist automation can do
OBS Studio’s VLC Video source can play a playlist of local media files. You can set it to loop or shuffle and decide what happens when the source is hidden during a scene change. OBS’s built-in WebSocket system can let compatible external software control scenes and sources; it is an optional control layer, not a requirement for basic playlist playback.
This setup is useful when a gaming broadcast needs a rotating set of authorized video or audio files, or when you want to control media playback without manually changing files in the source. It does not remove the need to operate and monitor OBS and the computer running it.

What you need before setting it up
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the same computer. The OBS documentation says the VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Local media files you are authorized to livestream and, if applicable, leave in the stream archive. OBS’s regular Media Source supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio. Confirm the formats you plan to use with your setup.
- A YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled, verification completed, and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- A stable upload connection that can sustain the settings you select. Test actual gameplay and audio rather than assuming a connection will hold up under broadcast conditions.
Build and configure the OBS playlist
- Install OBS Studio and VLC, matching their architectures. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select or create the scene where the playlist should appear. In the Sources area, add a VLC Video source.
- In the VLC Video source properties, add the local media files to its playlist. Arrange them in the order you want if you plan to play them sequentially.
- Choose whether to enable Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. Use ordered playback for a deliberate sequence; use shuffle when the order should vary. With looping off, playback can make a single pass rather than repeat.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior deliberately. OBS provides options such as stopping when hidden, pausing, or restarting when visible. Switch away from the scene and back during a test to check whether playback continues, pauses, stops, or restarts as intended.
- Apply the settings and play through the playlist in OBS. Check that each file loads and that its video and audio are usable before relying on it during a live broadcast.
Add manual or remote playback control
Use hands-off playback when that is enough
If the playlist should simply proceed according to its loop or shuffle settings, no external automation is necessary. The VLC Video source handles the playlist behavior; focus on testing its visibility setting and scene transitions.
Use hotkeys or WebSocket for extra control
For actions such as moving to the next item or controlling a source remotely, use a suitable OBS hotkey or compatible WebSocket integration. WebSocket is built into OBS starting with version 28, and the obs-websocket protocol includes media input actions such as NEXT. Exact behavior depends on your OBS version, source type, and the integration you use, so test the specific action on the installation you plan to stream with.

Protect remote control with a password. Do not expose an unprotected WebSocket connection, and do not assume that a particular control pad or app is required.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream.
- Use the YouTube stream URL and stream key to connect OBS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.
- If you scheduled the stream, check that the OBS preview appears in Live Control Room before going live.
- Run a private or unlisted test using representative gameplay, playlist playback, and audio. Choose output settings that your upload connection can sustain, inspect stream health, and monitor sound and picture during the test.
- After changing the playlist, scenes, or output settings, test again. A working playlist inside OBS does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Protect the stream key and clear the content
Treat the key as a credential
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS.

Check game, music, and playlist rights
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, produce a warning, or interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the content remains. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, for live content.
Use original, licensed, or otherwise authorized game footage, music, and playlist media. Some licensed material may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID. A license to listen to music personally does not necessarily authorize livestreaming or archiving it.

Common problems and what to check
- VLC Video source is missing or will not load: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops or restarts after a scene change: review the VLC source’s behavior when hidden. Test the selected stop, pause, or restart behavior with the actual scene transitions.
- Shuffle or looping does not match the show format: check the Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist settings, then play through enough of the playlist in OBS to verify the result.
- A WebSocket command does nothing: check compatibility among the OBS version, source type, and external integration. Test the specific action, such as
NEXT, and confirm the integration can reach OBS with the correct password. - YouTube does not show the expected preview: check that OBS uses the correct stream URL and key for the selected YouTube encoder stream, then review Live Control Room and stream health.
- The stream is interrupted or the archive is claimed: investigate third-party content in gameplay, music, and playlist files. Remove or replace material you are not authorized to livestream; a license may also require channel allowlisting by the rights owner.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: verify that livestreaming is enabled and the channel is verified, and check for a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
