If OBS crashes, automatic reconnect cannot restart it: reopen OBS, check the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, and try sending the feed to the same event if it is still available. That may restore the stream, but neither OBS nor YouTube documentation reviewed here guarantees that a crashed OBS session will resume the same broadcast. YouTube also does not publish a universal grace period for this situation, so check the event’s current state rather than relying on a timer.
First, identify what failed
A connection dropout and an OBS crash are different problems. OBS can retry a supported output connection while the program remains open; if OBS closes, the encoder process has stopped and must be reopened. OBS’s overview describes reconnect as an output option, and its API documentation says retry intervals double on each attempt to avoid overloading services: OBS Studio Overview Guide and OBS Studio 33.0.0 Output API Reference.

What to do immediately after an OBS crash
- Note what happened and when. Record whether OBS vanished, froze, or remained open with a connection warning. This helps distinguish a process crash from a network interruption.
- Check the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Review its broadcast status, preview, and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and messages during an event in its live encoder settings and stream health guidance.
- Reopen OBS. If it offers Safe Mode after an improper shutdown, use it as a diagnostic run. OBS’s interface text describes Safe Mode as disabling third-party plugins, scripting, and WebSockets: OBS Studio English interface strings.
- Verify the intended output before streaming. Select the correct profile and scene collection; confirm the YouTube service, server, and stream key; then start streaming. Watch both OBS’s output status and YouTube’s health or preview.
- Keep the existing key unless it is invalid or compromised. A stream key routes the encoder feed, and YouTube documents creating and entering a key as part of stream setup. A restart alone is not a reason to reset it. See Manage live stream settings.
- If YouTube has ended the event, switch deliberately. Select or create a new broadcast and tell viewers where to find it. The reviewed documentation does not guarantee that an ended event can be resumed.
- Save the crash evidence. Preserve the OBS log and crash report before changing many settings. OBS’s overview guide asks users seeking support to include a log file.
Prepare a gaming rerun so recovery is more likely
Configure OBS reconnect for connection drops
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the network reconnect options; exact labels may vary by version. Enable automatic reconnect for supported outputs and choose a retry count and delay appropriate to your connection. This helps with a dropped output while OBS is running; it is not a watchdog and will not relaunch OBS after a crash. OBS documents output reconnect settings and the API’s exponentially increasing retry interval, but does not establish a setting that covers every outage or process failure.
Keep the event, profile, and assets ready
- Create or select the scheduled YouTube broadcast in Live Control Room, then verify that OBS is pointed at the intended event and stream key.
- Save the OBS profile and scene collection. Keep copies of essential custom assets and notes about plugins or scripts so a restart does not depend on reconstructing the setup from memory.
- Keep Live Control Room available on a phone or second screen. It gives you a separate view of YouTube’s event state if the streaming computer fails.
Test the full rerun before the event
Run a private or otherwise safe test that includes gameplay motion and audio. Check that the correct scene is visible, sound is present, and YouTube reports a healthy feed. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while live in its encoder settings guidance.

Choose whether YouTube should auto-stop
For scheduled broadcasts, the OBS YouTube guide says YouTube auto-stop disables the possibility of reconnecting later to continue that broadcast. If returning to the same event matters, test with auto-stop disabled and confirm the current behavior in Live Control Room. Disabling it preserves a possibility, not a guarantee: the event can still end for other reasons, and OBS must still be restarted after a crash. Diagnose recurring crashes separately from network trouble
If OBS keeps crashing
Try Safe Mode, then investigate recent plugins, scripts, browser sources, graphics or encoder drivers, and software updates one at a time. Safe Mode disables plugins and scripts, which can help narrow the cause; the interface description does not identify the cause of any individual crash. Preserve logs before removing or changing components so you can compare what changed.

If OBS stays open but drops frames or disconnects
Treat this as a connection or output problem rather than assuming a software crash. OBS identifies unstable connectivity or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate as possible causes, and recommends investigating items such as server choice, bitrate, security software, VPN, and network configuration in its connection troubleshooting guide. Compare OBS logs with YouTube’s stream-health messages.
What not to assume
- There is no documented universal crash grace period. The official material cited here does not say how long YouTube waits after OBS crashes before ending a broadcast. Check the event’s actual state and settings in Live Control Room.
- Automatic reconnect is not crash recovery. It addresses supported output interruptions while OBS is running; it does not restart the application or guarantee that a restarted encoder can rejoin the same event.
- A backup ingest address is not automatic crash failover. YouTube’s HLS stream setup guidance discusses a backup ingestion URL for compatible encoders. That does not establish that OBS will switch to it after a crash or that the same broadcast will remain available.
