YouTube does not automatically turn ordinary uploads into a continuous live stream. You can run the encoder on a computer you keep powered and connected, or use a cloud playlist service to avoid operating a local machine.
What you need before starting
Plan the stream as a continuous video programme: prepare the recordings and any board visuals or commentary, arrange the files into a playlist, play that playlist through an encoder, and send its output to YouTube Live. OBS is an open-source option with official streaming setup and encoding guidance at the OBS Help Portal.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the streamer must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Video files you can lawfully use. Check rights for each game recording, board graphic, commentary track, music bed, and overlay. Do not assume that a game’s moves or a recording are automatically free to rebroadcast; rights can depend on the material and jurisdiction.
- A playback and encoding setup. For the local method below, use a computer capable of playing the files and running OBS while connected to the internet. No specific CPU, GPU, RAM, or bandwidth minimum has been established for this particular continuous-playback workload, so test your existing machine before buying a dedicated streaming PC.
Set up the local OBS-to-YouTube workflow
1. Prepare and order the chess recordings
Put the recordings in the order you want viewers to see them. Check that each file plays correctly from beginning to end and that its picture, board graphics, and audio are suitable for a live audience. If you use commentary or music, include only material you have the right to broadcast. Keep a separate copy of the source files in case you need to rebuild the playlist.
2. Create a YouTube Live event and get its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live.
- Set up the live event in Live Control Room and choose the encoder-based streaming workflow. Encoder streams are a YouTube-supported method for gaming and other video-intensive content.
- Copy the event’s stream key and enter it in OBS’s streaming settings for YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with anyone who should not control your stream.
Use the event’s preview before going public. YouTube’s official live-streaming tips recommend configuring in advance and starting the encoder early enough to check the preview.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Configure OBS to play the playlist
In OBS, use a media playlist or an equivalent playback arrangement to load the chess recordings in order and enable looping if you want the sequence to repeat. Add any board image, title, or commentary elements as scene sources. Confirm that the scene displays the intended video and that audio meters move when the recording contains sound. OBS’s help portal links to its streaming setup and encoding guides and recommends trying the Auto Configuration Wizard for basic settings.
There is no single bitrate, resolution, or keyframe value established here for every chess recording and connection. Preserve settings appropriate to your source and available upload capacity, then verify the encoder output in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview instead of assuming a configuration will work on every computer or network.

4. Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start OBS and confirm that the playlist begins, advances to the next recording, and loops as intended.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, audio, framing, and playback continuity. Check from a phone or another device as well as the streaming computer.
- Confirm that the live event is accessible as intended and that the archive file begins growing if you are retaining an archive.
- Monitor the connection and encoder for a meaningful test period before relying on the setup. YouTube’s checklist recommends checking the encoder early, inspecting the preview, verifying archive growth and accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality; these safeguards do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
- When you deliberately end the event, stop the encoder after the YouTube event ends.
Keep a local stream running continuously
A local encoder depends on the computer, OBS, playlist playback, and internet connection continuing to work. A crash, power interruption, software update, or network outage can interrupt the broadcast. For a continuous channel, arrange for a person or alerting process to check the encoder, network, player, audio, and YouTube stream health, and decide who will restart the system if it fails.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes stream health status that can help diagnose problems; it is not by itself a recovery plan. See the LiveStreams API documentation. A dedicated streaming PC is optional, not a stated requirement: test the computer you already have before purchasing hardware. A capture card is not needed just to play video files; it is relevant only when ingesting a separate physical video source.

Choose local playback or cloud playout
| Approach | What stays running | Playlist and recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Local OBS setup | Your computer, OBS, and internet connection must remain available for the encoder to keep sending video. | You control the local playback arrangement; monitor the encoder and connection and plan how to recover from a failure. |
| StreamNeo | StreamNeo runs the uploaded-video stream in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. | It supports 24/7 looping and playlists and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Its product and pricing details are at StreamNeo. |
| OneStream Live | Its help page documents continuous 24/7 YouTube broadcasting from prerecorded videos. | The cited help page establishes this workflow, but current plan limits, pricing, and uptime commitments are not stated there. See OneStream Live’s continuous-stream guide. |
Compare options against the factors that matter for your channel: whether a local machine must stay powered, playlist and scheduling controls, recovery and monitoring, output handling, cost and support, and the rights and terms for every media item. The information above does not establish a like-for-like reliability, cost, or quality comparison for cloud providers.
Or let it run in the cloud

| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube preview shows no incoming video | Whether OBS is streaming, the correct event and stream key are selected, and the computer has internet access. | Confirm the event and key in OBS, restore the connection, then restart the encoder and check the preview again. |
| Video appears, but the playlist stops or repeats incorrectly | Playlist order, loop setting, and whether each source file plays through in OBS. | Correct the playlist and loop configuration, then run a full playback test before leaving the stream unattended. |
| Picture works but audio is missing or poor | Whether the source contains audio, OBS audio meters, and the Live Control Room preview. | Correct the source or audio routing in OBS and test from another device before continuing. |
| The stream drops when the computer or network fails | Power, computer sleep or restart, OBS status, and internet availability. | Restore power or connectivity and restart the encoder. If continuous operation without a local computer is important, use a cloud playout option instead. |
| Stream health reports a problem | YouTube’s Live Control Room status and, for API-based diagnosis, the LiveStreams API health information. | Use the reported health information to investigate the encoder or connection, then verify recovery in the preview. |
Plan for rights and channel suitability
Before making a chess stream public, verify that you may rebroadcast the recordings and every accompanying asset. A game recording can include separate footage, commentary, graphics, or music, each of which may have its own rights holder or terms. Check permissions for the territories where viewers may access the stream and for any intended monetization. The available guidance does not establish a blanket rule that chess-game recordings are free to rebroadcast.
