How to Use NVENC for a 24/7 FFmpeg YouTube Stream on a Linux VPS

A practical guide to verifying NVENC on a Linux VPS, configuring FFmpeg for YouTube Live, and handling bandwidth, recovery, and the limits of 24-hour archiving.

You can run a continuous FFmpeg stream with NVIDIA NVENC only if your Linux VPS actually exposes a compatible NVIDIA GPU and your FFmpeg build includes the encoder. A VPS image or a GPU listed in a plan description is not proof that NVENC will work inside your guest. Confirm GPU access, check the encoder on the instance, then match FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s current ingest settings. A long-running encoder also needs monitoring: “24/7” does not by itself guarantee that YouTube will archive one uninterrupted event for 24 hours.

What you need before configuring FFmpeg

NVENC is NVIDIA’s hardware video encoder. It can move video encoding from the CPU to NVIDIA hardware, but it is not a software fallback that works on any Linux VPS. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg GPU-acceleration guide shows an example using h264_nvenc; it does not mean every GPU, driver, virtual machine, or FFmpeg build supports that encoder.

  • GPU access inside the guest: ask the VPS provider whether the specific instance gives your Linux guest access to a compatible NVIDIA GPU and its encoding capability. A provider’s GPU product listing alone does not establish guest access.
  • A working driver and FFmpeg build: the driver must work in the guest, and the FFmpeg binary you will run must expose the required NVENC encoder.
  • A suitable media source: this setup is for sending prerecorded video or another FFmpeg-readable input as a live feed. It does not make a camera stream or provide content rights.
  • Sustained outbound capacity: the VPS connection must carry the total stream bitrate continuously, with headroom.
  • A YouTube stream URL and key: create or schedule a stream in YouTube Live Control Room and use the ingest details YouTube provides for it.

Check NVENC on the actual VPS

After the provider has enabled GPU access and the driver is installed, run these checks using the same FFmpeg binary you plan to use:

ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders | grep nvenc
ffmpeg -hide_banner -h encoder=h264_nvenc

The first command should list h264_nvenc if that encoder is available in the build. The second should show the encoder’s options. If the commands return no matching encoder or report that it is unavailable, do not assume the VPS can use NVENC: check the instance’s GPU access, driver, and FFmpeg build with the host or system administrator. Installing a different FFmpeg build will not fix a guest that has no usable GPU access.

Choose YouTube’s video settings

YouTube’s official live encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are its recommended H.264 video bitrates; they are not universal values for every input. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest, but the encoder, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream configuration must all support the chosen format. H.264 is the most direct choice for the example command below.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate Keyframe interval
720p30 8 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
720p60 8 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
1080p30 10 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
1080p60 17 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Set a keyframe interval in frames based on the output frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps is two seconds; at 60 fps, 120 frames is two seconds. Set the output resolution and frame rate deliberately so that the selected row matches what FFmpeg sends, rather than selecting a bitrate from a different mode.

Use RTMPS when available: YouTube recommends the secure option. YouTube’s live settings also list RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Confirm the destination details in Live Control Room rather than assuming an endpoint or key format.

Configure and start the stream

  1. Confirm the source and output mode. For the example below, use a prerecorded 1920×1080, 30 fps video with audio, and select YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommendation. If your source or intended output differs, change the frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate to match the output mode. Test the actual file: a file that ends, has unusual timestamps, or lacks the expected audio stream can behave differently from a simple example.
  2. Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event. Treat the key like a password. Store the complete FFmpeg output destination, assembled using the exact details YouTube provides, in a protected environment variable or secret-management system. Do not commit it to a script repository, paste it into public logs, or share it. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset flow for a channel owner or manager and update the VPS configuration.
  3. Run a short test with representative content. Verify the source video’s picture and sound, confirm the output arrives in Live Control Room, and check stream health before relying on the process. Keep an eye on the watch page as well as FFmpeg’s output; a process that has started is not proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
  4. Start the FFmpeg process. This example loops one file, reads it at its normal playback rate, encodes video with NVENC, requests CBR-style rate control, and sets a two-second keyframe interval for 30 fps. Replace the destination variable with the protected output destination for your YouTube event.
export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_OUTPUT='<protected YouTube output destination>'
ffmpeg -hide_banner -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/program.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map '0:a:0?'
  -c:v h264_nvenc -r 30 -b:v 10M -minrate 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_OUTPUT"

This is an example for a 1080p30 H.264 output, not a provider-independent production recipe. It preserves the input’s frame dimensions; it does not scale a different-sized source to 1080p. Confirm FFmpeg’s output details and YouTube’s received mode during the test. The optional audio map allows the command to run if the input has no audio, but a documentary stream intended to include sound should use a source with the correct audio track. The AAC setting is an example; choose audio settings appropriate to the content and verify them in the preview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The YOUTUBE_RTMPS_OUTPUT placeholder is intentionally not a literal YouTube address. Use the exact URL and key issued for your stream, and protect the resulting value. Shell environment variables can still be exposed through process inspection or diagnostics on some systems; use access controls suitable for your host and avoid logging the destination. If the variable is unavailable in a service manager’s environment, the process may start without a valid destination.

Make it a managed process, not just a terminal command

A command launched in an interactive SSH session is not a reliable 24/7 service: logging out, a VPS reboot, an FFmpeg error, or a network interruption can end it. Run the process under a service manager such as systemd or another supervisor configured for your distribution, and arrange for it to start after reboot. Keep the media path readable by the service account, provide the secret securely to that account, retain useful logs with rotation, and set a deliberate restart policy. A restart policy can recover from a process exit, but it cannot correct a bad key, missing input file, unavailable encoder, or persistent network failure. Test a restart and a reboot before calling the deployment production-ready.

Plan bandwidth and check stream health

Your VPS needs sustained outbound bandwidth for the video, audio, and protocol overhead. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; its streaming guidance says the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. For a 10 Mbps video stream, account for audio and overhead as well as the additional margin, rather than provisioning exactly 10 Mbps. Confirm the VPS plan’s sustained egress capacity and network policy with the provider; advertised burst or port speed alone may not describe continuous throughput.

  • Watch Live Control Room’s preview and health messages during the test.
  • Check the actual public or private watch page for picture, sound, freezes, and continuity.
  • Monitor FFmpeg output and system resources so encoder errors, input failures, or process exits are noticed.
  • If recording locally as well, confirm that the recording file is being written and can be played. A healthy YouTube feed does not prove a local archive is intact.

Understand the 24/7 archive limitation

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that rule as a promise that one uninterrupted 24-hour event will be archived in the same way. If a VOD archive is important, verify YouTube’s current behavior for long streams and decide whether planned stream transitions or separate event segments suit the channel. That choice can interrupt the live feed, so test the operational plan rather than assuming a single FFmpeg process and a single YouTube event solve both continuous playback and archival.

Troubleshoot common failures

h264_nvenc is missing or fails to initialize

Check that the instance exposes NVIDIA GPU access to the Linux guest, that the driver is operational, and that the FFmpeg binary you are invoking includes NVENC support. Confirm that the selected encoder is supported by the available hardware and driver; no universal compatibility guarantee follows from the VPS plan name or FFmpeg version alone. If the host cannot expose a usable NVIDIA GPU, NVENC is unavailable on that instance.

YouTube reports a connection or bitrate problem

Recheck the stream URL and key, the selected codec and output mode, and whether the FFmpeg process is sending the expected bitrate. Compare the mode to YouTube’s current settings, use CBR, keep the keyframe interval at two seconds where possible, and verify that outbound bandwidth has the recommended 20% headroom above total stream bitrate. If the provider’s egress is unstable or insufficient, changing encoder settings alone will not supply missing network capacity.

The feed reaches YouTube but has no picture or sound

Inspect FFmpeg’s input and stream mapping. Confirm the file contains a video stream and, if sound is expected, an audio stream; check the preview and watch page rather than relying only on a successful process launch. The example command does not resize the input, so verify its dimensions and output frame rate against the selected YouTube mode.

The stream stops after a disconnect or VPS restart

Check the FFmpeg log and the supervisor’s status to distinguish a process exit from a network interruption. Confirm the service starts after reboot, has access to the media file and secret destination, and is configured to restart when appropriate. Automatic process restart is not the same as a confirmed YouTube reconnection: test recovery with the actual host, FFmpeg build, and stream configuration, and confirm that viewers see the feed resume.

The live event works, but the archive is missing or incomplete

Check whether the event exceeded YouTube’s documented under-12-hour automatic archive scope. A 24-hour stream is outside that stated condition. Verify current YouTube behavior and use a tested segmentation or transition plan if an archive is required.
