A Raspberry Pi can be used as the local encoder for a continuous YouTube lofi stream, but no Pi model and encoder combination is established as reliable for a particular resolution or frame rate without testing. Start with a conservative setup, run it on the actual board, power supply, network and media, and monitor it before treating it as a 24/7 broadcast. “24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee from YouTube or Raspberry Pi documentation.
What you need to decide first
The Pi sends your audio and visual loop to YouTube; it does not make the broadcast immune to power, network, software or platform interruptions. Choose the output workload based on both the Pi’s measured encoding performance and the upload capacity available at the installation site. YouTube’s published bitrate targets describe ingest requirements, not proof that a particular Pi can encode continuously at those settings.
- A Raspberry Pi model and power supply appropriate to the intended workload.
- A stable internet connection, preferably Ethernet where practical.
- A rights-cleared audio track or playlist and a still or lightly animated visual.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus an encoder that runs on the exact Pi operating system and model.
- A way to access the Pi remotely, inspect logs and check YouTube stream health.
Prepare the Pi for unattended operation
Install Raspberry Pi OS and enable remote access
Use Raspberry Pi Imager to install Raspberry Pi OS Lite, configure networking and remote access, and connect to the board over SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. The official getting-started guide covers headless setup and Ethernet or Wi-Fi configuration: Raspberry Pi getting started. Check that the chosen model supports the connection method you plan to use; for an installation that will run continuously, favor a stable wired connection when feasible.
Match the power supply to the model
Use a supply appropriate for the board. Raspberry Pi’s current recommendations list 5 V/5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 to support full peripheral capability and 5 V/3 A for Raspberry Pi 4; earlier boards have model-specific requirements. These are power recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming. See the official Raspberry Pi documentation for the current model-specific guidance.

Choose the encoder by testing, not assumption
Before settling on software, confirm it is available for your Pi OS and model, can loop the media and maintain continuous audio/video, and offers a practical way to restart after a process or network failure. During a test, observe CPU load, temperature behavior, upload stability, dropped frames, audio continuity and YouTube’s health messages. No Pi-specific sustained-encoding benchmark or thermal threshold is established here, so a setup that works briefly is not enough evidence for unattended use.
OBS Project documentation describes H.264 as its default, broadly compatible video codec. It also explains that MKV is more resilient if an unfinished local recording is interrupted, while MP4/MOV need finalization and may be unrecoverable if recording is interrupted. Those container notes concern local recordings; they do not determine the RTMP/RTMPS protocol used to send a live stream. OBS documentation does not establish performance for a particular current OBS build on a Pi, so verify compatibility and performance on your device. OBS recording formats

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into the encoder’s ingest settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in public logs.
- Start the encoder only after the stream configuration and media are ready, then use the Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is receiving a signal and inspect stream health.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the eventual broadcast. YouTube recommends monitoring health messages and testing before going live to an audience. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live encoder settings.
YouTube says enabling a channel’s first live stream may take up to 24 hours, so do not plan a launch around an untested last-minute activation.
Set video and audio to YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its published settings list H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 frames per second; a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds; and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use settings your chosen encoder supports and validate the resulting feed in YouTube’s health panel. Details: YouTube live encoder settings.

Choose a conservative resolution and bitrate
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Lower target than 1080p30, but still test Pi encoding and leave upload headroom. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 5 Mbps | Requires more upload capacity and must be verified on the specific Pi. |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees that the Pi can encode the output continuously or that a connection can sustain the rate. Leave margin for network variation rather than planning to use the full measured upload capacity. Test with representative motion as well as audio; a static image may conceal performance problems that appear with animation.
Make recovery observable and controlled
For an unattended deployment, configure the encoder to start at boot and use a process supervisor or restart policy so an exited encoder can be restarted. Keep logs available for diagnosis, but ensure they do not print the secret stream key. Check remotely on a schedule and distinguish an encoder process that has crashed from one that is running while YouTube is no longer receiving a healthy feed. These are practical implementation recommendations, not documented guarantees of uninterrupted service.

- Simulate an ordinary process failure during testing and verify that the restart policy behaves as intended.
- Test network interruption and recovery without assuming a process restart alone will restore the stream.
- Observe CPU load, thermal behavior, upload stability, dropped frames, and audio/video continuity during a long test.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for health warnings and verify the broadcast from a separate viewer device.
Plan around YouTube archives and music rights
Do not assume an unbroken broadcast becomes one replay
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That establishes the automatic archive rule for streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that longer streams are always deleted or preserved as one replay. If an archive matters, plan around that limitation rather than promising viewers a single recording of an uninterrupted stream. YouTube encoder setup guidance
Use music and visuals you have permission to broadcast
Secure the rights needed for both the music and visuals, including the intended livestream and any monetization. Attribution alone does not establish permission. YouTube says an active live stream removed for copyright can result in a copyright strike and a seven-day live-streaming restriction; three active copyright strikes can make a channel subject to termination. Review YouTube copyright strikes guidance before choosing the loop.

Troubleshooting a Pi lofi stream
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Stream URL/key, encoder state, or network route | Confirm the correct URL and private key are configured, check encoder logs without exposing the key, and verify YouTube’s Live Control Room status. |
| Frequent dropped frames or unstable health | Upload capacity, network variation, or encoder load | Check the actual upload connection and Pi load; test a lower workload such as 720p30, using YouTube’s listed bitrate guidance as the ingest reference. |
| Audio cuts out or drifts | Media playback, audio configuration, or encoder continuity | Test the full playlist and output path for an extended period; confirm stereo 44.1 kHz audio and a supported AAC or MP3 output. |
| Encoder stops after reboot or crash | Boot configuration or restart policy | Verify automatic startup and supervisor behavior with a planned reboot and controlled process-failure test; then confirm YouTube receives the recovered feed. |
| Stream runs, but replay expectations are unclear | Broadcast duration and YouTube archive behavior | Do not promise a single automatic archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or more; make a separate archive plan if replay availability is essential. |
