Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To keep a YouTube livestream running around the clock, send a continuous feed from an encoder—a computer running streaming software, a hardware encoder, or a hosted service—to YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube supplies the destination URL and stream key; the encoder supplies the video. For a self-managed setup, verify and enable live streaming, configure the encoder, test the incoming preview, and plan for monitoring, recovery, and the 12-hour archive boundary.
Choose the right kind of video server
“Video server” can describe several different setups. YouTube’s standard workflow is to connect an encoder to the platform; it does not require a particular server model. Choose based on whether you are producing live video or continuously playing prerecorded material, what format you need to send, and who will monitor the stream.
| Approach | What it does | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Computer with streaming software | Encodes and sends video from a computer to YouTube. | The computer, encoder configuration, network connection, and operator access must suit the stream. YouTube does not specify a mini PC or particular computer model as necessary. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Encodes and sends video using dedicated hardware. | Check that its supported formats and connection meet your production needs, and plan how you will monitor and recover the broadcast. |
| Hosted prerecorded-video service | Plays uploaded video from a hosted service to keep a YouTube stream running. | Useful for a prerecorded loop rather than a live camera production. Confirm a provider’s current functionality, pricing, territories, and limits before choosing it. |
For a self-managed cloud or dedicated server, the evidence available here does not establish a provider, minimum resources, bandwidth requirement, cost, or uptime commitment. Those depend on the chosen encoder and workload, so do not treat a generic server specification as a guarantee of suitability.
Check YouTube eligibility before configuring the encoder
YouTube’s Help guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its general live-streaming guidance also states a minimum age of 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do this before a planned launch rather than immediately before it. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Connect an encoder to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and complete any channel verification or activation steps. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select a stream. In Live Control Room, create a stream or choose the one you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter the destination in your encoder. In your software or hardware encoder’s streaming settings, select the protocol and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Use the settings that match your stream and encoder.
- Protect the key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and replace the saved key in your encoder. See YouTube’s stream-key instructions.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected picture and sound in Live Control Room. Check the viewer-facing stream before you rely on it for a continuous broadcast.
- Go live and monitor. Start the broadcast in Live Control Room when the preview and settings are correct. YouTube recommends monitoring video and audio continuously; if your encoder supports backup failover, test it before depending on it.
Set protocol, video, and keyframe options
Prefer RTMPS for standard ingestion
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted ingestion option, for sending a stream to the platform. Choose it in the encoder when supported and use the matching destination details provided by YouTube. The exact control names vary by encoder.
Match encoder settings to the intended output
YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264 and other codec options, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that your encoder and connection can sustain; the guidance does not establish one universal bitrate or server specification for every source and output.
Check the settings in both places: the encoder must actually send the chosen format, and the incoming YouTube preview must show the intended picture and sound. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for the applicable format details.

Use HLS only when its format support is needed
YouTube documents HLS as an option for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. HLS has specific segment and transport requirements, and YouTube notes that it has higher latency than continuous RTMP transmission. If low latency matters, account for that trade-off before choosing HLS. Follow YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions rather than assuming that RTMP and HLS settings are interchangeable.

Plan for continuity, monitoring, and archives
A 24/7 broadcast is not a guaranteed 24-hour archive
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise that a single stream longer than 12 hours will be completely archived. If retaining the full program matters, schedule shorter sessions and/or keep a separately maintained local recording. Check that the local archive is being written and remains usable while the stream runs.
Prepare for interruptions
A continuous stream needs an operator plan, not just an encoder setting. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, checking the preview, testing backup-encoder failover when available, checking the local archive as it grows, and continuously monitoring audio and video. Define who can reach the encoder and Live Control Room, how they will identify a dropped feed, and what they will do to restore it. A backup encoder is useful only if it has been configured and tested.

YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal uptime figure or a particular redundancy design for every setup. Treat the stream as an actively monitored service, and test your own recovery path before a long broadcast.
Respect copyright and YouTube policies
Looping footage does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s rules. Content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and creators cannot evade a live-streaming restriction by switching to another channel. Before looping a documentary, music, or other material, confirm that you have the rights needed for the video and audio in the stream. A live stream can still create a rights problem even if the source file is prerecorded. Review YouTube’s live-streaming policies and use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight.
Let a cloud service run prerecorded video
For a YouTube channel that needs a prerecorded loop rather than a live camera production, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs continuously from the cloud, streams uploads at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Your computer can be off while it runs.

A self-managed setup has costs that depend on the computer or encoder, hosting if any, connection, monitoring, and any local recording you need. The available YouTube guidance does not supply a server bill of materials, bandwidth target, or provider price, so estimate those against the actual source format and operating plan rather than relying on a generic 24/7 server recommendation. Use the upload-time calculator to plan transfers and the cloud vs PC cost calculator to compare operating approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep a YouTube livestream running if my computer is off?
Yes, if the encoder is hosted remotely or you use a cloud service that plays uploaded video. A local computer encoder stops sending when that computer or its connection stops.
Does YouTube automatically save a complete 24-hour livestream?
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a complete archive for one stream longer than that.
Can I use a prerecorded documentary in a continuous stream?
Only if you have the rights needed for the video and audio and comply with YouTube’s policies. A loop does not remove those obligations.
