Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can use a Raspberry Pi 5 as a YouTube encoder for prerecorded bhajan videos, but the Pi is not a one-click 24/7 streamer: you need boot media, a power supply, looping playback and encoding software, a reliable upload connection, and a YouTube stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and, for H.264 at 1080p30, 5 Mbps. Test the complete setup before relying on it for an all-day broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings and encoder setup guidance explain the platform-side requirements.
What you need before setting up the Pi
This setup is for playing video files already on your Raspberry Pi and sending them to YouTube Live—not for streaming from a camera. Raspberry Pi’s official setup guide lists boot media containing an operating system and a power supply as prerequisites. A case is optional, and wired Ethernet is one possible network connection; the guide does not prescribe a storage size, case, or cooling product for this workload. See the Raspberry Pi getting-started guide.
- A Raspberry Pi 5 with an operating system installed on boot media.
- A compatible power supply and access to the Pi’s desktop or terminal.
- Your prerecorded bhajan video files, with permission to stream both their audio and visuals.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen bitrate. Prefer wired Ethernet if it is practical at the installation site.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days.
There is an important encoding distinction: Pi 5 can hardware-decode H.265, but Raspberry Pi documents that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” Hardware decoding does not mean the Pi has a hardware video encoder. Read the Raspberry Pi camera documentation on the Pi 5 encoder before choosing a software pipeline. The sources here do not establish a particular media player, FFmpeg command, OBS configuration, unattended-restart service, or 24/7 thermal profile as a verified recipe.
Choose the video and stream settings
Set the encoder to match the source where practical, then choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a given Pi, network or stream will remain stable at that setting.

| Setting | Recommended starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | Use the server URL shown for your stream in YouTube Studio. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest; confirm your selected encoder can produce the chosen format. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | Choose a rate your upload connection can reliably maintain. |
| H.264 video bitrate | 5 Mbps for 1080p30 | This is YouTube’s recommendation for that format, not a measured minimum or stability promise. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | Check that the bhajan audio is audible and synchronized in the preview. |
These recommendations are from YouTube’s live encoder settings. If you cannot sustain the selected quality, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again rather than assuming the published recommendation will work on your connection.
Prepare a continuous playback workflow
First arrange the prerecorded videos in the order you want them to play, and decide whether the broadcast should repeat a single video or cycle through a playlist. Then use a playback-and-encoding application whose current instructions support continuous looping and YouTube’s ingest settings. The exact application and configuration depend on your operating system and preferred workflow; the documentation cited here does not validate a Pi-specific loop command or encoder recipe.

- Install and update Raspberry Pi OS on your boot media, connect the Pi to power and network, and confirm it can access the video files.
- Choose playback and encoding software that can feed prerecorded audio and video to a live encoder, repeat the selected file or playlist, and set the protocol, codec, bitrate, audio and keyframe interval.
- Configure playback to begin automatically only after you have confirmed that a manual test works. For an unattended installation, separately investigate how your chosen software recovers after a crash or power interruption; no particular watchdog or restart method is established here.
- Keep the Pi on a stable surface with adequate ventilation. The available sources do not specify a Pi 5 temperature limit or certify a cooling arrangement for continuous encoding, so monitor the actual system during your test.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube Studio into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- Start the encoder so it sends the loop to YouTube. Wait for the incoming signal and inspect YouTube’s preview before going live.
- Run a private or unlisted end-to-end test using the same video, audio, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, playback loop, network path and approximate duration you expect to use on air.
- During the test and broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s output. Address warnings or interruptions before treating the setup as ready for unattended use.
YouTube describes the stream-creation, URL/key, preview and go-live sequence in its encoder setup guide. Its guidance recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health; a successful short test does not establish that a longer run will be uninterrupted.
Plan an all-day run and its archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not promise that a broadcast longer than 12 hours will be preserved as one complete archive. If the archive matters, keep the broadcast within the stated under-12-hour behavior or check the Live Control Room and channel after the event rather than assuming a longer stream will produce one complete video. A long-running stream can also be interrupted by network, power, software or YouTube-side problems, so monitor it when possible.

Confirm rights before streaming bhajans
A devotional subject does not make a recording automatically free to livestream. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the composition, the particular sound recording and any visuals, for the territories and uses you intend. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn the creator, and it may interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. Even when you have a license, a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel. Resolve that with the owner before broadcasting rather than relying on a license document alone to prevent an automated interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming copyrighted content.

Know what a license does—and does not—mean for monetization
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy, clarified on July 15, 2025, calls repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content” and says monetized content must be original and authentic. Its reused-content review is also separate from copyright permission and applies at channel level. Having a music license therefore does not guarantee monetization, and it is not possible to predict how YouTube will assess a particular bhajan stream or channel. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm the stream is selected in YouTube Studio, and verify the Pi has internet access.
- The preview stutters or stream health degrades: Check the Pi’s network connection and sustained upload capacity. Reduce resolution or bitrate and retest; YouTube advises choosing a quality the connection can reliably sustain.
- The picture appears, but audio is missing or out of sync: Check the encoder’s audio input and selected AAC or MP3 output, then listen to the YouTube preview before going live.
- The loop stops or the stream ends unexpectedly: Check whether playback reached the end without repeating, whether the media application stopped, and whether power or network connectivity was interrupted. The exact recovery steps depend on the software you selected.
- YouTube warns about third-party content: Stop and resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner. Confirm permissions cover both the recording and visuals, and ask whether your channel must be allowlisted.
- A long broadcast is not available as one archive: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete archive for longer runs. Check the Live Control Room and channel archive.
