The basic chain is NAS shared folder → OBS on an encoder computer → YouTube Live. This documentation-based setup is a practical workflow, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation on every NAS or network.
How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works
A NAS holds your music videos in a shared folder. The encoder computer accesses those files over the local network; OBS plays them and encodes the output; YouTube receives that output over your internet connection. YouTube does not read or stream files directly from your NAS. Synology documents accessing NAS files from a computer over SMB, while OBS documents playlist playback through its VLC Video source. Synology’s shared-folder guidance and OBS’s media-source documentation support this arrangement.
There are two separate network paths to keep healthy: the local connection from the NAS to the encoder, and the encoder’s internet upload to YouTube. A fast internet connection cannot fix an unreliable local NAS share, and a healthy local network cannot compensate for insufficient upload capacity.
Prepare the NAS and video library
Create a shared folder and grant access
- Create a folder on the NAS for the stream’s cleared video files and enable the file-sharing method the encoder computer will use. Synology’s example uses SMB access from a computer; the exact menus vary by NAS model and software version.
- On the encoder computer, connect to the shared folder over the local network and confirm that the files open and play. Use a dedicated NAS account with only the access needed for the stream rather than exposing the share more widely.
- Keep a separate backup of the library. RAID can help with some drive failures, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup. Choose capacity based on the actual video library, expected growth, and recovery needs; there is no universal drive size or RAID layout for this workflow.
Check the media before building the playlist
Confirm that every file is readable from the encoder computer and that its audio and video play as intended. Include the real mix of motion and sound in later tests: a static devotional image with music and a visually busy music video can behave differently for encoding and network load.

Install OBS and make a looping playlist
- Install OBS on a computer that can remain powered and connected while the stream is meant to run. Install VLC as well; OBS says the VLC Video source will not appear unless VLC is installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene. Add the NAS-hosted media files to the source playlist. If the share is unavailable after a restart, reconnect it and verify file access before going live.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the last item. OBS documents looping as enabled by default and shuffle as disabled by default; check the source settings rather than relying on defaults, especially if sequence matters.
- Choose whether to shuffle based on the channel’s programming. A fixed order suits scheduled devotional blocks; shuffle can vary playback but may not fit a planned sequence. Check that the playlist contains only files you have rights to stream.
The playlist loop keeps OBS playing the selected files; it does not make the encoder computer, NAS, network, or YouTube connection fault-tolerant. Plan for interruptions separately.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting with these values.
- Enter the server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Prefer RTMPS, which YouTube recommends. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with anyone who does not need access.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before relying on the setup. Confirm that YouTube receives video and audio, the playlist advances and loops, and the stream health is acceptable.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval
Set quality to what your upload can sustain continuously, not merely what it can reach in a brief speed test. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supported codecs including H.264, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its current H.264 bitrate recommendations include:

These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not measured requirements for your channel or a guarantee that a connection will hold steady. Leave headroom for audio and network overhead. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing upload speed and using a preflight stream with comparable movement and audio, then monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Clear music and video rights before streaming
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. It can replace a live stream with a placeholder, and unresolved matches can lead to interruption or termination. Even content you have licensed may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s live copyright guidance.

For an Indian music stream, verify rights for each recording, composition, and video, including the territories covered and whether the permission includes livestreaming and any resulting archive. Buying a track or holding a general license does not by itself establish that YouTube streaming and archiving are cleared. Ask the relevant rights holders when the scope is uncertain.
Plan for continuous operation and archives
A 24/7 stream depends on more than the playlist: the encoder must stay powered, the NAS share and local network must remain reachable, and the internet upload must stay stable. Decide who will respond to outages and how the encoder, NAS, and network will be restarted or checked after a failure. Test recovery procedures rather than assuming a looping playlist will resume correctly after a reboot or dropped connection.

YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not provide a complete procedure for archiving a continuous 24/7 broadcast or handing off between streams. Confirm the current YouTube limits and decide how you will handle the channel’s live session and archives before launch. YouTube’s encoder setup page is the relevant starting point.

- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the source list.
- OBS cannot open NAS files: Check that the encoder computer is connected to the local network, the share is mounted or reachable, and the account has access. Test a file outside OBS to separate a NAS-access problem from a source configuration issue.
- Playback stops or files disappear mid-stream: Check NAS availability and local network stability. A local share interruption is distinct from an internet upload problem.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or drops frames: Check sustained upload capacity and stability, lower the output resolution or bitrate if needed, and repeat a preflight test with representative audio and movement.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key in OBS, confirm that the selected stream is live and available in YouTube Studio, and keep the key private.
- The stream is interrupted for a copyright match: Review YouTube’s notice and resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner. A license may not prevent interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted through Content ID.
