Which OBS source should you choose?

These sources are not a quality ranking. Choose according to whether you need one file or a playlist, whether loop or shuffle controls matter, and whether you are willing to install VLC. OBS documents the available behavior, but does not establish that either source is inherently more reliable or higher quality in every setup. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Set up a local music playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC Video Source will not appear unless VLC is installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source to your scene. In OBS, select the scene for the stream, use the Sources panel’s add control, and choose VLC Video Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Add your files to the playlist. Populate it with local audio or video files that you have the right to stream. An OBS media playlist is not the same thing as a playlist hosted on YouTube; the OBS documentation describes adding media files and does not establish that an ordinary YouTube playlist URL can be imported as a local playlist.
- Choose playback behavior. Set whether to loop the playlist or shuffle it. OBS’s documented defaults are loop off and shuffle off; treat these as defaults, not recommendations. Check visibility behavior as well: OBS documents options to stop or restart, pause or unpause, or always play when a source becomes visible or hidden.
- Check audio and picture. Confirm the intended audio track, adjust levels in the OBS mixer, and inspect framing if files contain visuals. Listen to a preview to catch silence, clipping or an unintended track before you stream.
- Set up YouTube’s encoder stream. Enable live streaming for the channel and configure an encoder stream using YouTube’s current instructions. YouTube’s interface can change, so follow its current live-streaming setup guidance for stream-key and event steps.
- Preview and verify the feed. Before going live, check the incoming audio and visuals and review YouTube’s stream health indicators. Do not assume that a playlist playing locally means the YouTube feed is receiving it correctly.
- Clear rights before transmission. Confirm permission for the exact recordings and compositions, territories, live broadcast and any archive, and determine whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID.
OBS documents a 400 ms default for VLC Video Source network caching, alongside audio-track and subtitle controls. Network caching is relevant to network media; it is not a universal performance setting for local files. OBS’s documentation does not prescribe a bitrate, resolution or keyframe interval for this source choice. For encoder settings, use YouTube’s current requirements for your stream rather than treating a media-source setting as an encoder recommendation.
Confirm YouTube eligibility and music rights
Channel eligibility
YouTube’s general live-stream guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the person streaming must be at least 16. These are general platform requirements for live streaming, not the separate requirements YouTube sets for mobile streaming. Check the current YouTube live-streaming guidance before scheduling, because platform rules and interface details may change.

Copyright checks can interrupt a live feed
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can lead to a temporary interruption or termination. YouTube advises streamers with a license to ask the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption when the channel has not been allowlisted. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music rights from artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants, and has met applicable requirements in the stream territory. This is a platform-contract statement, not a determination of which Indian legal permissions apply to a particular song, recording, territory or use. The available platform guidance does not settle a complete India-specific legal checklist. Seek qualified advice for your repertoire and obtain permission from the relevant rights holders.

Check the license for both live and archived use
A “free” or “royalty-free” label does not by itself establish that a track is safe for a live broadcast or archive. Check the actual terms for livestreaming, archived video, territories, monetization and attribution, and keep records for the specific works and recordings you use. YouTube identifies public-domain music and music used with permission as copyright-safe options, and recommends its Audio Library, original music and carefully checked third-party licenses. YouTube Creator Music is not a documented solution for this workflow: its current usage details say tracks offered through licensing or revenue sharing cannot be used in livestreams. The same guidance says Creator Music is available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video Source is missing from OBS: Install VLC, then reopen OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, make sure VLC is 64-bit too.
- The playlist ends instead of continuing: Check the VLC Video Source playlist’s loop setting. OBS documents loop as off by default.
- Tracks play in an unexpected order: Check whether shuffle is enabled. OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
- The source pauses or restarts when hidden or shown: Review the source’s visibility behavior and choose the stop/restart, pause/unpause or always-play behavior that fits your scene.
- There is no sound, or the wrong audio is heard: Check the source’s audio-track selection and OBS mixer level, then listen to a preview before going live.
- YouTube replaces, interrupts or terminates the live feed: Treat this as a possible rights or Content ID issue. Stop and resolve the claim with the rights holder; if the use is licensed, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted. A working OBS playlist does not override YouTube enforcement.
- A YouTube-hosted playlist will not load as expected: The OBS documentation supports media-file playlists; it does not establish importing an ordinary YouTube playlist URL as a local playlist. Use supported local media files whose rights you have cleared.
