Select With timing if the SRT already contains timecodes, choose the file, and click Save. The steps below follow YouTube Help’s current English labels; menus may look different in another language or after an interface update.
Upload an SRT file in YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the left-hand menu.

Select the video you want to caption.

Choose Add language and select the language spoken in the captions.

In the Subtitles row for that language, choose Add, then Upload file.

Choose With timing if your SRT includes timecodes. Choose Without timing only if the file contains caption text without timing information.

Select the SRT file and choose Save. Check the subtitle track against the video to confirm the captions appear at the intended times.
YouTube also lets creators add subtitles during the video upload process. The Studio menu labels above are from YouTube Help’s Add subtitles & captions instructions.

Check that the SRT is upload-ready
YouTube lists SubRip (.srt) as a supported basic subtitle format. Save the file as plain UTF-8 text. A typical cue contains a number, a start and end time separated by -->, and the caption text; cues are separated by line breaks. YouTube’s example includes a timestamp in this form: 00:00:00,599 --> 00:00:04,160. That example illustrates the format; it does not define every accepted SRT variant.

Choose a caption method that fits your starting material

For auto-sync, follow the YouTube Studio subtitle instructions. YouTube says timing may take a few minutes to create. Manual entry is another option described on that page; captions can serve deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers as well as viewers who speak another language.

Fix common SRT upload and syncing problems

The upload is rejected: confirm that the file has an .srt extension and is saved as plain UTF-8. YouTube lists SRT as a supported basic format.

The captions are in the wrong language or track: return to the video’s Subtitles page and check that you added the intended language under Add language.

The text appears too early, too late, or at the wrong point: check the SRT timecodes against the video. A correctly formatted file can still be out of sync if its timings do not match the video.

Styling is missing: YouTube does not recognize style markup in SRT. Keep the file to basic captions and timing rather than relying on styling tags.

You have a transcript but no timestamps: use auto-sync if the spoken language is supported and the audio is suitable, or enter captions manually. Auto-sync is not recommended for videos over an hour or with poor audio.
Let a collaborator handle subtitles
You can invite a Subtitle Editor through YouTube Studio. The role is limited to the Subtitles area, and the video must have a video language set before a Subtitle Editor can add or edit subtitles. See YouTube Help’s Subtitle Editor access instructions.
