To update a YouTube stream key used by FFmpeg on Linode, copy the current key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and replace the old key in your script or its protected configuration. Reset the key only if it needs to be rotated—for example, if it may have been exposed. Then restart FFmpeg and confirm that YouTube receives the stream.
Find or reset your YouTube stream key
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that owns the stream. Open Create → Go Live, then select the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Find the Stream key section. See YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings.
- If the existing key is still valid and you are only updating the script, copy the current key. You do not need to reset it for a routine configuration change.
- To rotate a key, select Reset beside the hidden key, then copy the newly generated value. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset; editors and viewers cannot. After a reset, update every encoder or script that used the old key.
Treat the key as a password: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put a real key in public code, an article, or diagnostic output. If it was exposed, reset it and replace it wherever it was configured.
Update the FFmpeg destination on Linode
Locate the FFmpeg output target in the script, service configuration, or other configuration source used to launch it. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key as separate values; copy them from the relevant Live Control Room stream rather than substituting an example server. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
FFmpeg documents RTMP output destinations and shows the general form of an RTMP URL. The example below is only a pattern: use the endpoint and key format supplied for your YouTube stream, and preserve the script’s existing input and encoding options unless you intend to change them. The exact script, Linux distribution, process manager, and Linode configuration vary, so this is not a tested Linode service configuration. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Avoid logging the expanded destination, which could expose the key. Some URLs already contain path components; follow the endpoint/key arrangement shown by YouTube and used by your script rather than blindly appending another path.
Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP traffic in transit. In Live Control Room’s Stream tab, click the lock icon beside Stream URL to retrieve the RTMPS URL, then use that URL with the current key. Do not change only the protocol while keeping an unverified server address. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

- If FFmpeg reports an SSL error, check that you copied the full RTMPS URL and that the protocol and server are correct. YouTube suggests trying port 443 when the URL otherwise looks correct.
- If the connection times out, recheck the URL and verify that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Use the exact port and endpoint shown or recommended for your stream.
Restart FFmpeg and verify the stream
- Save the updated configuration and restart the FFmpeg process using the same method that normally runs it on your Linode host. The correct restart command depends on how that process was installed and launched.
- Check FFmpeg’s output for a successful connection and active output. Do not share logs containing the expanded destination or key.
- Open Live Control Room and check for the incoming preview. Follow the control-room workflow for going live if your stream requires a manual action.

Troubleshoot a failed connection
