Migrate the loop as a service, not as a cloud snapshot: build a Hetzner server, reproduce the encoder and its startup behavior, copy the media and configuration, test it against YouTube Live, then switch over while keeping Linode available for rollback. Do not assume a Linode disk image can be imported as a Hetzner snapshot; Hetzner documents snapshots as copies of server disks, and excludes attached volumes.
What to prepare before migrating
A YouTube loop stream depends on more than the virtual machine: its media files, playlist, encoder, service configuration, credentials, network access, and restart behavior all need to work on the destination. Begin by recording what runs on Linode and how it is managed, then reproduce and test those pieces on Hetzner before stopping the source.
Inventory the Linode service
- Record the operating system, architecture, encoder or transcoder, and software versions.
- Note media and playlist paths, scripts, service or container definitions, runtime user and group, permissions, environment variables, logs, and restart behavior.
- Document firewall policy, required open ports, and any attached block storage.
- Identify where the YouTube stream key is stored, but do not put the key in migration notes, public commands, shell history, or logs.
- Measure CPU, memory, disk, and network use while the loop is running. Choose the destination against the workload you observe—not simply because the process is called a loop.
Akamai describes Linodes as virtual machines and documents supported Linux distributions and cloud features. Its migration procedures cover moves within Akamai Cloud; they are not a method for moving a workload to Hetzner. Akamai Linode compute documentation and Akamai migration documentation.
Choose a transfer and rollback plan
Decide how to copy media and configuration, how you will compare the copies, and when you can tolerate an interruption. Keep the Linode intact until the Hetzner service has passed operational checks. No source-backed transfer command applies to every installation, so use a method suitable for your actual operating system, storage layout, and service.

Create and configure the Hetzner server
In Hetzner Cloud, create a server using an operating system and architecture supported by your encoder. Select a location and server type using measured CPU and memory demand, compatibility, storage needs, and network considerations. Hetzner’s creation flow includes SSH access, public or private networking, volumes, firewalls, backups, and cloud-init options. See Hetzner’s server creation guide and server overview.
- Create the destination: choose the OS image, server type, location, and SSH access method.
- Plan connectivity: decide whether the server needs a public IP, a private network, or both. Recreate only the firewall rules the service and administration require.
- Plan storage: add a volume if the media or working set needs separate storage. Treat volume data separately from the server disk when planning backups.
- Recreate the runtime: install the required packages, encoder, service manager or container runtime, user permissions, environment, and restart policy.
- Make setup repeatable if useful: use cloud-init or another documented setup method so the destination configuration is understandable and recoverable.
Copy media, configuration, and state safely
Copy the loop media, playlist, scripts, configuration, and any required local state to their intended paths on Hetzner. Where practical, compare file counts or checksums before testing. Recreate secrets through a secure method rather than copying them into a command that may be saved in shell history or logs.

Do not treat a Hetzner snapshot or server backup as a copy of an attached volume: Hetzner says those capture the server disk, not attached volumes. If you take a snapshot before a final synchronization, it also represents the disk at the time it was captured; copy later changes separately. If the existing setup uses NGINX RTMP, Linode’s tutorial is an example of an RTMP configuration and recommends authentication to reduce stream-hijacking risk; it does not mean every loop uses NGINX RTMP. Linode’s RTMP tutorial.

Configure and test the YouTube encoder
Use the current stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming the old host’s settings are still correct. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, starting the encoder, checking the preview, and going live according to the selected workflow. - Confirm the stream: open Live Control Room and verify the intended stream, server URL, and stream key. Treat the key as a secret.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported: use the RTMPS endpoint supplied by Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, which provides encryption. Do not reuse an endpoint from an old configuration without checking it. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Start a controlled test: launch the destination encoder and check that the preview appears in Live Control Room before making the planned cutover.
- Check the actual output: verify outbound connectivity, the correct host and port, audio and video, and the resolution and bitrate you expect from the source media and encoder.
- Check firewall behavior: recreate the required Hetzner rules rather than assuming Linode’s policy followed the migration. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting advises checking the URL and, where appropriate, port 443.
Cut over without discarding the rollback option
- Confirm the destination service, files, permissions, and YouTube settings are ready.
- At the planned time, pause or stop the Linode encoder so the two hosts do not unintentionally send competing content using the same stream settings.
- Start the Hetzner encoder with the verified Live Control Room URL and key.
- Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing stream for the expected video and audio.
- Keep Linode available until the Hetzner service has passed operational checks, including a controlled service restart and server reboot test.
Do not plan on a guaranteed seamless handoff. YouTube documents starting and stopping an encoder, but does not promise that replacing one encoder with another preserves one uninterrupted event. YouTube also states that all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Account for that behavior when scheduling the switch and deciding whether the broadcast should be treated as a sequence of sessions or an ongoing event. YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Choose Hetzner capacity and estimate operating needs
Compare server types and locations using the measurements from the running Linode service, along with architecture compatibility, disk and attached-volume requirements, geographic latency to YouTube ingest and to operators, transfer needs, public IPv4 requirements, backup needs, and acceptable downtime. Hetzner says server prices vary by type and public IPs are separate; check its current plan details before choosing. Hetzner server overview.
Do not assume a generic monthly transfer figure applies to your stream. Estimate data use from the actual bitrate and runtime, and compare it with the applicable server and network terms for your chosen plan.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
- The encoder cannot connect: recheck the current Live Control Room endpoint and stream key, outbound connectivity, Hetzner firewall rules, and the required host and port. For RTMPS, consult YouTube’s guidance on the URL and port 443.
- The stream connects but has the wrong content or no audio: verify the playlist and media paths, file permissions for the service user, and the encoder’s selected audio and video inputs.
- The service works manually but not after reboot: check the service or container startup configuration, runtime user, environment variables, mounted storage, and restart policy. Test recovery with a controlled restart before retiring Linode.
- Some media is missing: compare file counts or checksums and confirm whether the source files lived on an attached volume. Hetzner server snapshots and backups do not include attached volumes.
- The YouTube event ends or is archived during the switch: schedule the cutover with YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior in mind; the platform does not guarantee a seamless encoder handoff.
