On most Samsung Smart Remotes, press the center of the Volume control once to unmute; press it up to raise the volume. On older remotes, press the dedicated Mute button once. If sound still does not return, check where the TV is sending audio and whether the connected device—such as a soundbar, cable box, or streaming player—is muted.
Unmute a Samsung TV with the remote
- Samsung Smart Remote: Briefly press the center of the Volume control. On this remote design, pressing the control toggles mute; pushing it up or down adjusts volume. See Samsung’s Smart Remote instructions. A long press may open Accessibility Shortcuts on some models, so press briefly.
- Traditional remote: Press the button marked Mute, often shown as a speaker with a slash through it. Then press Volume Up several times in case the volume is also set very low.
Look for the mute icon to disappear or the on-screen volume indicator to change. Button layouts and behavior vary by remote and TV model; consult the manual for your exact TV if the controls differ. Samsung’s model manual example illustrates one older layout.
If unmuting does not restore sound
Try these quick checks in order:
- Press Mute or the Smart Remote Volume control once, then press Volume Up. Confirm the on-screen volume changes.
- Check the TV’s speaker output. Sound may be routed to a soundbar, receiver, Bluetooth headphones, or another device instead of the built-in speakers.
- Check the external device’s own volume and mute controls. The TV can be unmuted while a cable box, streaming stick, game console, or soundbar remains muted.
- Try a different built-in app or input. If only one source is silent, investigate that device and its cable before changing TV settings.
Switch the output to the TV speakers
On many newer Samsung TVs, use Home → Settings (or All Settings) → Sound → Sound Output → TV Speaker. If you do not see those exact labels, look for options such as Speaker Select or Speaker Settings. Samsung’s sound settings guidance explains the output choices and notes that when external speakers are selected, the TV remote’s Volume and Mute controls may be disabled.

Use SmartThings or the TV’s controls if you have no remote
- SmartThings app: If the TV is already added to SmartThings and is reachable on your network, open the app, tap Menu → All devices, select the TV, and use the on-screen remote to unmute or raise volume. The setup requires a Samsung Account and internet connection for network-based smart features. See Samsung’s SmartThings TV remote guidance.
- Physical TV controller: Some models have a button or joystick underneath, at the back, or on the side. Its functions vary; use it to reach settings or adjust volume if your model supports that, but do not assume every set has a direct mute control.
- Replacement remote: Search by the TV’s exact model number and confirm compatibility. A universal remote may work but can lack some model-specific features. Samsung explains replacement options here.
Check a soundbar or receiver
If you use an external audio system, make sure it is powered on, set to the correct input, and not muted independently. Confirm the TV’s Sound Output matches the connection—such as HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi—and check that the HDMI cable is plugged into the TV’s ARC/eARC port when that connection is in use. Reseat the cable at both ends, then restart the TV and audio device.
With a compatible setup and correct output selection, a Samsung TV remote can control soundbar volume and mute over optical or HDMI ARC. See Samsung’s soundbar control instructions. Check Bluetooth headphones or speakers
The TV may still be playing audio, but sending it to a paired Bluetooth device. Open Home → Settings → Sound → Sound Output and choose TV Speaker to test the built-in speakers. You can also disconnect the Bluetooth device. Samsung notes that supported models may offer a Bluetooth Speaker List option under Sound Output; Bluetooth support is not universal. If the remote’s mute button does nothing
- No volume indicator appears: Check whether external speakers are selected. Try the sound system’s remote, then test the Samsung remote’s other buttons.
- Remote commands are unreliable: Replace batteries in an infrared remote or charge a rechargeable Smart Remote. Point it at the TV and remove anything blocking the sensor. A Smart Remote may need to be paired again. Samsung’s remote troubleshooting guide has model-specific steps.
- Only the source is silent: Use the cable box, streaming device, console, or player’s own remote to check its mute and volume settings. Restart that device if necessary.
- Only Mute or Volume fails: If other buttons work, the control itself may be damaged. SmartThings, if already configured, can help as a temporary control; otherwise consider a compatible replacement remote.
Still no sound? Isolate the problem
- Test another source. Try a built-in streaming app, live TV, another HDMI input, or another connected device. If only one source is silent, focus on that source and its cable.
- Run the TV’s Sound Test. On many models, open All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Sound Test and follow the prompts. The menu can differ. Samsung says a problem during the test may require service; it does not identify a particular failed component.
- Cold-boot the TV. With the TV on, press and hold the remote’s Power button until the set turns off and turns back on. This is Samsung’s restart procedure for clearing residual power and resetting the main board, not a guaranteed repair.
- Check for updates. Look under All Settings → Support → Software Update. If the problem is limited to an external device, check for updates on that device as well.
- Inspect HDMI connections. Reseat the cable at both ends and try a known-good cable. Some Samsung models provide an HDMI cable test; availability varies, and Samsung cautions that results may be inaccurate for cables longer than 2 meters.
Samsung’s no-audio troubleshooting guide covers the Sound Test, cold boot, updates, and HDMI checks. Contact Samsung Support or arrange service if the TV fails the Sound Test, or if every source remains silent after checking the output, restarting, and testing connections. Seek help as well if the TV’s physical controls or remote sensor are malfunctioning, or audio repeatedly cuts out or crackles.
