YouTube’s official help does not document a setting that permanently disables the “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt. The closest official workaround is to turn off Autoplay, which stops the next video from starting automatically—but it is not a guaranteed way to suppress every interruption, especially during a single long video. Watch-history controls and the “Continue watching” shelf solve different problems.
First, identify which “Continue watching” you mean
YouTube uses similar language for separate features:
- “Video paused. Continue watching?” is an inactivity prompt that pauses playback during extended watching with Autoplay on.
- Resume playback saves your position in a partly watched video so you can return to it. This is not the inactivity prompt.
- Google TV’s Continue watching shelf is a home-screen row that can include items from multiple apps. It is separate from YouTube’s player controls.
If you mean the pop-up over a playing video, start with Autoplay. If you mean saved activity or a home-screen item, use the history or Google TV instructions below.

Why YouTube pauses and asks
YouTube says the prompt can appear when Autoplay is on and videos have played without interaction. Its help page gives approximate thresholds of 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, and 180 minutes on a TV. The prompt may appear before those thresholds, so it need not arrive at an exact minute. YouTube describes it as a safeguard for watch-history accuracy and data use—not necessarily an account problem or playback error. YouTube’s explanation of the prompt documents choosing “Yes” to continue, but does not document a switch to turn the prompt off.

Turn off Autoplay: the closest official workaround
Use this if your main goal is to stop YouTube from automatically moving into another recommended video. Autoplay settings can differ across devices, so change it on the device that is actually playing the video. These paths reflect YouTube’s published instructions; labels can vary with app version, account type, device, or region.
- Android, iPhone, or iPad: Open YouTube, tap your profile picture, then Settings → Autoplay and switch it off. You may also find an Autoplay control on the video watch screen.
- Computer: Open a video and switch off Autoplay at the bottom of the player.
- Smart TV, streaming device, or game console: In the YouTube app, open the left-side menu and choose Settings → Autoplay; turn it off.
- Casting from a phone or tablet: Start playback, tap the control bar at the bottom of the mobile screen, expand the queue or playback controls, and switch Autoplay off.

Turning off Autoplay stops the next video from starting automatically. It does not erase watch history or remove partly watched videos, and YouTube does not describe it as a universal “disable the prompt” control. It may not prevent the inactivity check while one long video is playing. For a deliberate sequence, use a playlist or queue rather than relying on a chain of recommendations.

Deleting a video from watch history addresses saved activity and can affect recommendations; it is not a direct fix for the playback prompt.

- Computer: Go to My Activity, sign in to the Google Account used for YouTube, open YouTube History → Manage history, then delete individual videos or choose DELETE for a time range.
- Android, iPhone, or iPad: In YouTube, tap your profile picture, then Settings → Manage all history. Delete individual items or manage history controls there. To pause future watch history, open the Controls tab and unselect Include the YouTube videos that you watch.
- TV or game console: Open the YouTube app’s left-side menu, choose Settings, then select Clear watch history to remove existing history or Pause watch history to stop recording new activity.
Check YouTube’s watch-history instructions for your device. Clearing history or pausing it can change history-based recommendations and other experiences; removing history for a chosen period may also remove YouTube search history from that period. If you only want one item gone, deleting that entry is more targeted than clearing everything. YouTube Premium’s documented “Continue watching” benefit concerns resuming a video position across devices; it does not establish that Premium disables this prompt. Premium benefits.
If you meant the Google TV Continue watching shelf
On Google TV, highlight the item in the Continue watching row, press and hold the remote’s Select button, then choose Hide. That hides an item from the Google TV shelf; it does not change YouTube’s inactivity prompt. Google TV’s instructions.

Using YouTube for sleep sounds, pets, or background listening?
- Turn off Autoplay if you want one video to end rather than flow into recommendations.
- For a planned run of music, ambience, a podcast, or exercise audio, use a playlist or queue so the sequence is intentional.
- If playback stops unexpectedly, check that the device is connected to power and that battery-saving settings are not suspending the app. Also check for Wi-Fi or mobile-data interruptions.
- For audio-first listening, a dedicated audio service may suit the use better, but switching services is not an official way to disable YouTube’s prompt.
If Autoplay is off but the prompt still appears
- Confirm Autoplay is off on the device currently playing—not just on your phone or computer if playback is on a TV.
- Check whether the video is playing through a cast session, playlist, or another device; open the relevant queue or player controls.
- Make sure the message is the player prompt, not a Google TV shelf item or a resume suggestion.
- Update the YouTube app, then restart the app or device. If playback is unreliable, check the network and power-saving settings as well.
- If the interruption persists, treat Autoplay off as a workaround rather than a guaranteed bypass. You can send feedback to YouTube requesting a dedicated setting.
Some browser extensions or scripts claim to dismiss the prompt, but they are unofficial and may stop working when YouTube changes its player. Their safety, compatibility, and privacy practices are not established here. Do not install an extension or run a script without checking its permissions, publisher, update history, and privacy terms; avoid tools that automate clicks or create account or security risks.

Does turning off Autoplay remove the “Continue watching?” prompt?

Does YouTube Premium disable the prompt?
YouTube’s published Premium benefits describe resuming a video position across devices, not disabling the inactivity prompt.
Does clearing watch history stop the prompt?
Not directly. Clearing history removes saved viewing activity and can affect recommendations; it is separate from the playback prompt.
Why does the prompt show up sooner on my phone than on my TV?
