  3. Select Audio & Subtitles.
  4. In the Subtitles section, choose Off, None, or the equivalent option shown.

UltraPro OneTouch Backlit Remote Control for Smart TV
  • NO PROGRAMMING REQUIRED FOR SIX TV BRANDS — Preprogrammed buttons instantly control Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Fire TVs and Roku TVs (some Sharp and Insignia Roku TVs may require programming); requires two AAA batteries (not included)
  • STREAMING APP HOTKEYS — Dedicated buttons provide direct access to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and YouTube when installed by the TV manufacturer; support for user-installed apps may vary
  • FULLY BACKLIT KEYPAD — Illuminated buttons improve visibility and navigation in dark rooms, bedrooms, media rooms and other low-light environments
  • DESIGNED FOR SMART TVs — Convenient replacement remote for compatible Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Fire TV and Roku TV models throughout your home
  • EASY SETUP AND CONTROL — Simply insert two AAA batteries and select your TV brand; no programming required for supported TVs

On a TV or streaming player

Start the title, reveal the controls with the remote, and open Audio & Subtitles. Choose Off or None under subtitles. Some TVs display language choices along the bottom of the screen instead of using the usual menu icon. Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, game consoles, and manufacturer-specific TV apps may arrange their controls differently, so use the playback menu rather than relying on a universal button sequence.

If captions will not turn off or keep returning

Make sure you changed the subtitle setting

In Audio & Subtitles, check the Subtitles section and select Off or None. Choosing another audio language changes what you hear; it does not switch subtitles off.

Check whether it happens on one title or many

If captions appear on only one show or movie, they may be subtitles for dialogue spoken in a language other than the title’s original language. Netflix notes that these can appear even when ordinary subtitles are off. Try another title to see whether the behavior is specific to that program.

Check the device’s accessibility caption setting

If Netflix’s subtitle setting is off but captions remain across titles on one device, check that device’s accessibility or closed-caption controls. Device-level settings may also affect other apps or broadcast content.

Netflix documents these paths for older Xbox models specifically:

  • Xbox 360: Settings > System > Console Settings > Display > Closed Captioning > Off
  • Xbox One: Settings > Ease of access > Closed Captioning > Closed Captioning Off

These are Netflix’s documented paths for Xbox 360 and Xbox One; they should not be assumed to apply to Xbox Series X|S. See Netflix’s subtitle troubleshooting guidance.

Consider Kids-title preference behavior

Netflix says subtitle and audio preferences may not be saved for most Kids titles watched from an adult profile. It recommends playing a title rated Teens or above with the preferred subtitle setting to save that preference for future viewing; it also says preferences are saved when watching from a Kids profile. This concerns preference saving and does not guarantee identical behavior for every title or device.

Try the basic recovery steps

  1. Stop playback, reopen the title, and check the subtitle selection again.
  2. Close and relaunch Netflix.
  3. Check for available Netflix-app or device updates.
  4. Test another title and, if possible, another device.

If subtitles remain across titles and devices, contact Netflix support. For some 2011 or 2012 Samsung Smart TVs, Netflix says an older app version may prevent None from turning subtitles off; its workaround is to stream Netflix using another device. That is a legacy-device exception, not general advice for Samsung TVs.

Subtitles, closed captions, and Audio Description are different

Subtitles generally show spoken dialogue. Closed captions can include dialogue as well as relevant sound information, such as music or other audio cues. Netflix provides both in the same Audio & Subtitles playback area; its explanation is available in Netflix’s accessibility information.

If you want dialogue without sound descriptions, choose a regular subtitle track instead of an SDH track when one is available. Netflix identifies titles offering Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) with an SDH badge on the title details page, though availability can vary by season or episode. Turning captions off also removes useful descriptions such as music, alarms, and speaker identification.

If the unwanted feature is a voice narrating actions or scene changes, it is Audio Description—not captions. Open Audio & Subtitles and choose an audio track that does not say Audio Description. On Apple TV and iPhone or iPad, Netflix also documents checking the device’s Audio Descriptions accessibility setting. See Netflix’s Audio Description troubleshooting steps.

Changing caption appearance does not turn captions off

If you want to make text smaller or less prominent rather than remove it, Netflix provides appearance controls for font, size, shadow, and background. On the web, the path is Account page > Profiles > choose a profile > Subtitle appearance > choose settings > Save. On Android, Netflix lists My Netflix > profile name > Manage Profiles > choose profile > Subtitle Appearance. On Android, appearance changes made in the app apply to titles played on that device. These controls affect how subtitles look; they do not disable them. See Netflix’s subtitle appearance instructions.

Can you disable captions permanently for every title?

Netflix’s documented method is to change subtitles during playback. Preference saving can depend on the profile and title, while some foreign-language dialogue may still be subtitled. The documented guidance does not establish a single account-wide switch that guarantees captions will never appear.
