Check the server URL configured for your encoder. Match it to the current stream’s primary or backup ingest address in YouTube Studio or the YouTube Live Streaming API. A healthy preview or stream-health indicator shows that YouTube is receiving a feed; it does not, by itself, identify which ingest address your encoder is using.
Check the ingest URL in your encoder
- Open the streaming or service settings for the YouTube stream you are checking.
- Read the server, ingest, or destination URL selected for that output.
- Compare the URL with the primary and backup addresses for that same stream. In the YouTube Live Streaming API,
cdn.ingestionInfo.ingestionAddressis the primary address andcdn.ingestionInfo.backupIngestionAddressis the backup address. The API describes the latter as the backup ingestion URL to use when streaming to YouTube with RTMP, DASH, or HLS. See the YouTube Live Streaming API liveStreams reference.
Use the values associated with the current stream rather than an address saved from an earlier setup. If the encoder or streaming service exposes output logs, check the destination shown there against the current setting.
Check both outputs if you configured redundancy
A primary and backup address are separate destinations, not separate names for a single stream key. A backup URL is optional and can be used for a parallel feed. If your encoder has separate outputs, inspect each output and verify which address is assigned to it. The setting tells you where that output is configured to send; it does not prove that the backup path is working.
Use Live Control Room to check reception, not destination
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check its preview and stream status. YouTube says stream status includes specific error messages with instructions, and Live Control Room provides stream health and analytics. These are useful for confirming receipt and diagnosing problems, but YouTube’s documented health information does not label the received feed as the primary or backup endpoint. Make sure you are comparing the right protocol
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest. RTMPS is a secure extension of RTMP; use the actual protocol and URL configured in your encoder when comparing addresses. YouTube says to obtain the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room; the ordinary URL may be shown by default. Do not compare an RTMPS setting with an RTMP address and assume they are identical. Test failover separately
If you need to confirm that a backup encoder takes over, perform a failover test rather than relying on the address alone. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. This tests whether the backup path functions; it is different from identifying the URL currently selected in an encoder. Follow YouTube’s backup encoder setup and testing guidance.

Quick diagnosis
- You see a healthy preview but do not know the destination: inspect the encoder’s current server URL and compare it with the stream-specific primary and backup addresses.
- The encoder has two outputs: check the destination assigned to each output, as well as any available output logs.
- The URL appears not to match: confirm that you are looking at the same YouTube stream and comparing RTMP with RTMP or RTMPS with RTMPS.
- You want to know whether failover works: test the backup path by stopping the primary encoder and checking for playback rollover.
