A local 24/7 YouTube study-music stream can recover after a power outage, but only if each link in the chain works: the UPS and equipment regain power, the computer boots, the streaming encoder launches and reconnects, the network reaches YouTube, and the broadcast is still available or is restarted. A UPS and OBS reconnect setting help with different parts of that chain; neither alone guarantees that your stream returns unattended.
What has to recover after an outage?
Think of recovery as separate stages, not one automatic restart. A computer may regain power without booting; OBS may open without sending a usable feed; and YouTube may no longer have the original broadcast available. Verify each stage before assuming viewers can see the stream.
- Power: The UPS has enough runtime to bridge the outage, or utility power returns before its battery is depleted.
- Computer: The machine starts when AC power returns. That behavior depends on its firmware settings.
- Encoder: OBS launches with the intended YouTube service, server and stream key, then connects or retries.
- Network and ingest: The modem/router and internet connection work, and YouTube receives the encoder feed.
- Broadcast: The configured stream is still available, or you start the appropriate scheduled or new broadcast and confirm it is live.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key to route and accept the feed. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings.
Prepare a local computer-and-UPS setup
Size and connect the UPS for your actual load
Connect the streaming computer and the networking equipment that must stay online—typically the modem and router—to outlets marked for battery backup, not outlets that provide surge protection only. Check the UPS watt and VA ratings, the expected runtime at your measured load, battery condition, and which outlets are battery-backed. There is no responsible universal capacity recommendation without knowing the equipment load and how long you need to bridge.

Runtime depends on the connected load and battery condition, among other factors. APC’s example gaming setups list 13 minutes for a gaming PC with one monitor and 27 minutes for a gaming laptop with one monitor; APC says a router/modem is included by default in those examples. Those figures are specific examples, not estimates for a different streaming setup. APC also notes that frequent use and elevated temperatures can wear batteries faster, and that runtime is approximate. Check APC’s UPS runtime examples against your own equipment and the UPS maker’s guidance.
Set the computer to start when power returns
In the computer’s BIOS or UEFI firmware, look for a power-restoration setting with a name such as “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Back,” or “Power On After Power Failure.” Labels vary by motherboard. Choose the behavior that powers the computer on when utility power returns, then save the setting. APC cautions that the UPS may restart when adequate utility power is restored while the attached computer does not; the computer’s firmware must be configured to power on when power is available. See APC’s explanation of UPS and computer restart behavior.

If the UPS battery runs out, this setting matters: the UPS coming back online does not itself prove that the PC has booted. Also consider how the operating system handles startup, sign-in and application launch. A machine that waits at a sign-in screen may prevent OBS from starting as intended.
Configure OBS and YouTube controls
- In OBS, select the intended YouTube service/server and enter the correct stream key. Store and handle the key as a credential; do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Enable OBS automatic reconnect for dropped connections. This can help with a brief connection interruption while OBS is running; it does not restore power, boot the computer, launch OBS, or guarantee that the same YouTube broadcast resumes.
- Review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. When enabled, these let the encoder start or stop a configured stream. YouTube’s documentation does not describe them as recovery from complete power loss or as a way to extend a broadcast session.
- Arrange for OBS to open after the computer starts, using the operating-system startup options that fit your setup. Confirm that the correct profile and scene collection load, and that the study-music source is available.
For details on what YouTube’s start/stop controls do, use its live stream settings guide. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive note is not a promise that a broadcast will recover after an outage or remain live for 12 hours. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guide.

Test the full recovery sequence safely
Do not wait for a real outage to discover whether the whole chain works. Arrange a controlled test when you can monitor the channel and safely interrupt power. Observe the UPS, computer boot, OBS launch and connection, and the incoming feed in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm the preview and stream health, and check the public watch page. A reconnect indicator in OBS is not, by itself, proof that YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
What to do when power returns
- Check the UPS. Confirm it is back on utility power and is not overloaded or reporting a battery fault. If the battery was depleted, allow it to recharge; runtime may be reduced until it has recovered. APC notes that a recent outage or a battery near end of life can contribute to inadequate runtime. Its UPS guidance also discusses approximate runtime and battery wear.
- Confirm the computer booted. If it did not, inspect its power state and the firmware’s AC-restoration setting. The UPS restarting is not the same as the computer restarting. APC documents this dependency in its restart guidance.
- Check OBS itself. Make sure the correct profile is open, the intended stream key is configured, the music source is active, and OBS is sending data. If the old broadcast has ended, follow your channel’s configured or scheduled stream workflow rather than assuming a reconnect can revive it.
- Verify YouTube is receiving video. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the preview and stream health. Confirm the public watch page shows the live broadcast before leaving the setup unattended.
- Investigate the network if power is stable. Check the modem/router, cables, network card and other hardware between the PC and internet, plus security software or possible ISP changes and congestion. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections can reflect a network problem between the computer and the remote ingest server. If local checks do not resolve it, OBS recommends contacting your ISP.
Know what automation can and cannot do
OBS automatic reconnect addresses a dropped connection while the encoder is available to retry. It cannot start a computer that stayed off, restore a dead modem, or guarantee that YouTube’s original broadcast session remains open. Likewise, YouTube’s auto-start/auto-stop controls operate the configured encoder stream; they are not a substitute for power restoration or session verification.

A UPS bridges only an outage that fits within its available runtime. If utility power stays out longer, the UPS can run down; even after power returns, the computer may need its firmware set to power on after AC restoration. No setup based on one local computer and one power source should be described as truly uninterrupted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate power resilience from internet resilience
A backup internet path can help when the primary connection fails, but changing WAN paths does not restart a local encoder or guarantee that YouTube resumes the same broadcast. Treat power recovery, computer/encoder recovery and network failover as distinct problems. If you add a backup ISP or router failover, verify its behavior with your equipment and test the YouTube feed; no particular failover configuration is established here as a guarantee of continuity.

When a cloud workflow fits better
For a stream made from uploaded study-music videos, a cloud workflow can remove the streaming computer and home power connection from the playback path. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded material rather than a camera feed. Its listed features include automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; that is different from a guarantee against every outage or a promise of uninterrupted availability. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your study-music recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free StreamNeo day.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for study music
A technically recovered stream is not necessarily a stream you are allowed to broadcast. Before leaving study music live around the clock, make sure you have the rights needed for the music and any visuals, including permission for livestreaming and YouTube use. YouTube’s encoder and stream-setting guides explain how to send and control a feed, not whether a particular track is licensed for your channel. Check the terms attached to your music sources and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before using the content. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and do not assume that crediting an artist or using a track available online grants streaming rights.
Common recovery problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| UPS is on, but the computer is off | The PC did not power on when AC returned, or the UPS battery was depleted. | Check the computer’s BIOS/UEFI AC-restoration setting and UPS status; APC explains that computer power-on behavior may require a firmware setting (APC). |
| Computer booted, but OBS is not open | OBS is not configured to launch, or the operating system is waiting at sign-in. | Review startup and sign-in behavior, then confirm the intended OBS profile opens. |
| OBS is open but cannot connect | The internet path is down, unstable or blocked, or the stream configuration is wrong. | Check service/server and stream key, modem/router, cables, network hardware and security software. Follow the OBS network troubleshooting guide; contact the ISP if needed. |
| OBS appears connected, but viewers do not see the intended broadcast | YouTube may not be receiving a usable feed, or the old broadcast may have ended. | Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health; if the old stream ended, use the channel’s configured or scheduled stream workflow and verify the new broadcast. |
| UPS runtime is shorter than expected | The actual load, battery age or condition differs from the assumed setup; a recent outage may also leave the battery undercharged. | Check the manufacturer’s runtime guidance at your load, battery status and supported outlets. APC’s published gaming examples are configuration-specific, not a general runtime promise (APC). |
Choose a recovery plan for the outage you need to survive
For short interruptions, a correctly sized UPS plus a tested computer, OBS and YouTube recovery sequence may be sufficient. For longer outages at home, a cloud playback workflow reduces dependence on local power for the stream itself. For internet interruptions, assess backup connectivity separately. Compare options by actual load and runtime, battery-backed outlets, battery age and replacement, graceful-shutdown support, recovery behavior, control of the music source and stream key, service terms, and what viewers see during a source loss.
