To run a YouTube radio stream with a static station logo and changing now-playing text, send YouTube a video signal made from the logo and a text layer, alongside your radio audio. The text layer must receive current artist-and-title metadata if it is to update as tracks change. An encoder—software on a computer or a standalone hardware device—combines these elements and sends them to YouTube Live.

What you need for the stream

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  • An audio source for the radio programme and a video source. A still image containing your station logo can provide the video signal.
  • An encoder that can send the combined audio and video to YouTube. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and maintains a directory of verified encoder options.
  • For changing now-playing text, current track metadata—at minimum, artist and title—and an encoder workflow that renders that metadata into the video.

A logo by itself does not generate track information. The changing text is a visual overlay in the encoder output, driven by metadata supplied by your radio or playlist workflow.

Choose an encoder approach

Approach Useful when Trade-off
Software on a computer You want a graphical scene with an image, audio and text sources, or want to configure the stream yourself. The computer, encoder process and network must remain available for the stream to continue.
Software automation on a server You want to automate a still-image-and-audio stream and can maintain the server process and recovery setup. You are responsible for configuration, monitoring and restarting failed processes. Example commands and settings from third-party guides are not universal presets.
Standalone hardware encoder You prefer a dedicated device and its built-in graphics or scheduling features. Check that the current model supports your inputs and exact metadata workflow. YouTube’s encoder directory describes AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder with logo, lower-third, picture-in-picture and scheduled-playback features; that does not establish that it will automatically read your radio metadata.

For the software workflow below, Liquidsoap documents a pattern that combines a playlist or radio source, an image as video, and metadata-driven text. A graphical encoder can also build a scene with an image and text layer, provided you have a reliable way to update that layer from current track metadata.

Set up the YouTube stream

  1. Enable live streaming: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and complete channel activation if prompted. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create or select a stream: In the Live Control Room, create a broadcast or select the stream you intend to use. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that setup.
  3. Protect the stream key: Enter it only into your encoder. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
  4. Choose the supported ingest protocol: YouTube’s API documents RTMP/RTMPS, DASH and HLS ingestion options. Use the protocol supported by your encoder and the configuration shown in Live Control Room; do not assume an endpoint copied from another setup applies to yours.

YouTube describes the stream as the audio/video feed sent by the encoder and the broadcast as what viewers see. The exact server URL and key are setup-specific.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build the logo, audio and now-playing output

Prepare the station image

Create a still image with the station logo and any fixed station information you want viewers to see. Use it as the video source. Keep the logo and text comfortably inside the image rather than against its edges, and check readability at the final output size on a phone as well as a larger screen.

Connect the radio audio

Choose the radio feed or playlist as the audio source. Your encoder must send that audio together with the image; a video-only stream will not deliver the programme sound. Liquidsoap’s YouTube example shows the underlying pattern: create a playlist, use an image for video, combine (mux) the image and radio source, then encode the result for YouTube. Its documented settings are examples to adapt, not universal requirements.

Make track text change

Pass current track metadata—such as artist and title—to a text overlay that is rendered into the outgoing video. Liquidsoap documents metadata records with artist and title fields and a video text operator that can use metadata as its input, allowing the displayed text to change over time. If your source does not provide fresh metadata, the overlay cannot reliably show the current track; test the handoff between tracks and decide what should appear when metadata is missing.

In a graphical encoder, arrange the image and text as scene elements and connect the text update to the metadata source used by your radio workflow. Confirm that the text is part of the outgoing video, not merely a label visible in your local encoder interface.

Start, check and monitor the live stream

  1. Start the encoder with the YouTube server URL and stream key for the selected stream.
  2. Open the Live Control Room preview and confirm that the logo appears, the audio is audible, and the text changes when the track metadata changes.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Its API can report issues including missing audio or video, unsupported codecs, and keyframe intervals longer than four seconds. Treat those reports as diagnostics for your actual stream rather than relying on a third-party example’s bitrate or resolution as a guaranteed preset.
  4. Monitor the encoder, audio source and network while the stream is running. Reconnection or restart features depend on the chosen software or hardware; they are recovery mechanisms to configure and verify, not a guarantee that a stream will never stop.
  5. When ending an encoder stream, stop the encoder and manage the broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived when stopped; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for longer streams.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; continued use of matched content can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Archived broadcasts may also receive Content ID claims after the live stream ends. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

If you have a licence for third-party music, check whether the rights owner must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted, even when the operator believes the music is licensed. Keep documentation of your rights and confirm the licence covers the live use, territory and intended archive.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
Live activation is not available yet The channel has not completed initial live-stream enablement. Complete the required YouTube Studio steps and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
Encoder will not connect Wrong or outdated stream key, server URL, or unsupported ingest protocol. Copy the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room setup, verify the protocol your encoder supports, and replace a key that may have been exposed.
Preview has no audio The radio source may not be connected to the encoder output, or YouTube may report missing audio. Check the audio routing at the source and encoder, then inspect stream-health feedback.
Preview has no image or the logo is absent The image may not be included in the outgoing video scene or video encoding may have failed. Confirm the image is an active video source in the encoded output and check YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics for missing video or codec issues.
Now-playing text stays the same or is blank Fresh artist/title metadata may not be reaching the overlay, or the text layer may not be rendered into the stream. Inspect metadata at the radio source, verify the overlay reads that metadata, and test a track change in the actual Live Control Room preview.
Stream health flags keyframes YouTube may be receiving keyframe intervals longer than four seconds. Review the encoder’s keyframe interval against the health feedback and adjust its settings; do not assume one example setting suits every encoder.
Stream is interrupted despite a music licence The rights owner may not have allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Ask the rights owner about allowlisting and follow YouTube’s live copyright guidance. A licence alone does not ensure uninterrupted live playback.
Stream stops after running unattended The audio source, encoder process, computer or server, or network may have stopped. Check which component failed, configure the encoder’s available reconnect or restart behavior, and arrange monitoring appropriate to your setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want an uploaded recording or playlist to play continuously on YouTube without keeping a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
