You can use your device’s normal screenshot shortcut while watching Netflix, but the protected video may appear as a black rectangle in the saved image. If the Netflix controls, subtitles, or browser window appear while the movie frame is black, the shortcut probably worked: the playback path is excluding the protected video from capture.
Why a Netflix screenshot can turn black
A screenshot can capture the Netflix page or app interface separately from the video itself. Content-protection systems may prevent the video surface from appearing in a screenshot or recording. The result can be a normal-looking capture with a black video area. Technical capture-prevention work describes black output as an expected way protected content may be excluded; a long-running Microsoft support discussion also documents this behavior, though its dated user reports conflict about which setups allow capture.
That does not mean Netflix blocks every screenshot on every device. Results can vary by operating system, app, browser, device, and playback path. Nor does every black image prove capture protection: if Netflix itself is black during playback, investigate a playback or display problem instead.

Try the normal screenshot command
Pause at the moment you want, hide playback controls if practical, take a screenshot using your device’s usual command, and open the saved image to check it. If interface elements appear but the video is black, repeating the shortcut or changing screenshot apps is unlikely to restore the frame.

Windows
- Windows + Shift + S: Open Snipping Tool and select the video area.
- Print Screen: Capture according to your current Windows configuration.
- Alt + Print Screen: Capture the active window on supported configurations.
- Windows + Print Screen: Save a full-screen capture automatically on supported versions.
Open Netflix in a supported browser or the Windows app, pause, then try Windows + Shift + S. If the capture includes controls or subtitles but has a black video rectangle, the screenshot tool is functioning; the protected frame may be excluded. Netflix documents playback options for Windows 10 and later, but supported browsers and playback quality can depend on hardware and other requirements. See Netflix’s Windows playback guidance.
Mac
- Shift + Command + 3: Capture the entire screen.
- Shift + Command + 4: Select an area to capture.
- Shift + Command + 4, then Space: Capture a window or menu.
- Shift + Command + 5: Open the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later.
For a targeted attempt, pause Netflix and press Shift + Command + 4, then select the playback area. Apple notes that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows, so a correct shortcut does not guarantee a captured Netflix frame. See Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions.
Netflix says AirPlay and screen mirroring from a Mac to a TV are no longer supported for Netflix, and Sidecar or iPad screen mirroring must be turned off while Netflix is playing. These are not reliable alternatives for capturing the video; see Netflix’s black-screen troubleshooting guidance.

Android
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press Power + Volume Down at the same time. If that does not work, hold the Power button and tap Screenshot, if your device offers that option.
- Look in Google Photos under Collections → On this device → Screenshots, or in your phone maker’s Gallery app.
Button behavior and menus vary by manufacturer. Even if Android saves the screenshot successfully, Netflix’s protected video may be missing or black. The built-in screen recorder is not a dependable workaround for protected playback. See Google’s Android screenshot and recording instructions.
iPhone and iPad
Use the normal screenshot buttons for your model. On Face ID iPhones and many recent iPads, that is generally Side button + Volume Up; on older devices with a Home button, it is generally Side or Top button + Home. Check the thumbnail or Photos app afterward. If the Netflix interface is present but the video area is black, the protected playback layer may have been excluded. Because button combinations vary by model, use Apple’s current instructions for your device.
Read the result before troubleshooting

If Netflix playback itself is black
These steps address a black picture during playback, not a black rectangle in an otherwise successful screenshot. Netflix recommends troubleshooting that can include updating the browser, checking or updating video drivers, resetting the Windows app when it is malfunctioning, testing a supported browser, and checking external display connections. Follow the applicable directions in Netflix’s support article. Fixing a playback fault may restore the picture on screen, but it is not a guaranteed way to make protected video capturable.

Why browser switches and recording apps are not dependable fixes
Netflix in a desktop browser, the Windows app, mobile apps, and TV or streaming devices use different playback paths. A capture that works in one setup may fail in another; switching to Chrome or another browser is not a universal fix. Older forum advice about browser behavior is especially unreliable as a current guarantee.
Screen recorders and capture tools—including built-in options and third-party apps—may capture the desktop while omitting the protected video. Disabling browser hardware acceleration is also an unofficial, inconsistent experiment, not an approved Netflix screenshot fix. It may do nothing or make playback, performance, or battery life worse; restore the original setting if playback deteriorates. Avoid tools that promise to remove DRM, download Netflix titles, or defeat capture protection: they are not necessary for ordinary troubleshooting and may be unsafe or contrary to Netflix’s terms.
Legitimate alternatives when you need a still
- Capture Netflix interface information—such as a title page, episode list, or synopsis—if identifying the program is all you need.
- Look for official promotional artwork or stills through Netflix publicity or title-promotion channels, when available.
- Use a licensed image source for a review, documentary, or other editorial or commercial project.
- Note the title, season, episode, and timestamp for personal reference instead of saving the frame.
- Ask the rights holder or distributor for permission if you need an image for publication, advertising, teaching materials, or commercial use.
Terms and rights
Netflix’s Terms of Use prohibit circumventing, removing, disabling, degrading, or thwarting content protections, and restrict reproducing or publishing Netflix content unless expressly authorized. That is distinct from copyright law, whose exceptions vary by jurisdiction and purpose. A personal screenshot is not automatically cleared for publication; seek permission or qualified legal advice when the use matters.

Why is my Netflix screenshot black?
When Netflix playback is otherwise normal, a black video area often means the protected video surface was excluded from capture. If the picture is black during playback too, troubleshoot the playback or display problem instead.
Why do subtitles or controls show but not the picture?
The interface and video can be captured as separate layers. Seeing controls or subtitles with a black frame is a strong sign that the screenshot command worked but the protected video was omitted.
