To stream portrait videos continuously on YouTube with FFmpeg, prepare a compatible playlist, encode it as a vertical frame such as 1080×1920, and push the output to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. FFmpeg can loop one input, but that is not the same as advancing through a playlist of separate files: a multi-file stream needs a playlist or orchestration workflow that feeds clips into one continuous encoder output.

The steps below explain the setup, the settings to check, and the operational safeguards a 24/7 stream needs. YouTube documents encoder streaming and vertical layouts, but not a single official FFmpeg command for a continuous multi-file playlist.

Choose the playback workflow first

Decide whether you want to repeat one video indefinitely or play a sequence of different clips. The distinction matters because FFmpeg’s loop video filter repeats frames from an input; it does not select and advance through a collection of files. The FFmpeg filter documentation describes loop=-1 as infinite looping: FFmpeg loop filter documentation.

  • One video repeated: use a repeat-capable playback workflow for that input.
  • Multiple videos in order: maintain an ordered input list and feed the files into a continuous output. Depending on the clips and your setup, this may require normalizing or re-encoding inputs and using a playlist or an orchestration process to schedule each file.

For a queue, test the transitions between files. Incompatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or audio layouts can cause playback or encoding problems at a boundary. A continuous process is an operational goal, not a guarantee of gap-free transitions.

Prepare the videos and vertical framing

Check and align your source files

Before building the output, check each clip’s video codec, dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. Make the files compatible where practical. If they differ, normalize or re-encode them so the encoder can produce a consistent stream, and test the result at every transition.

Decide how content fits a portrait frame

Use an actual portrait output frame—for example, 1080×1920—if you want a vertical stream. Choose the composition deliberately:

  • Crop to fill: fills the frame, but can cut off edges. Check faces, captions, and other important content.
  • Fit with padding: keeps the full image visible, but leaves unused space around it.
  • Designed layout: places the landscape image inside a portrait canvas with a background or other layout elements.

YouTube’s vertical live layouts include center crop, fit-to-phone-width, and stacked options. If you use a third-party encoder for a vertical and horizontal output at the same time, send each format to its corresponding stream key. See YouTube’s live streaming help for current vertical-live details.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Enable live streaming on your channel. YouTube requires channel verification, and the channel must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check the channel’s eligibility before preparing a long-running broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s live streaming help.
  2. Open or create the broadcast in Live Control Room. Use the control room’s encoder setup to obtain the stream’s server address and stream key.
  3. Use the RTMPS endpoint shown there. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS. Google’s developer guide specifies port 443 and explains that the correct server, application path, and hostname/SNI are needed for authentication: Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
  4. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, log, or shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s streaming settings.

For a basic encoder push, use RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS live-ingest method is a separate segment-upload workflow with requirements for muxed M2TS segments, a rolling media playlist, supported video and audio formats, and segment sequencing. A local playlist of video files is not the same thing as YouTube’s HLS ingestion playlist. See YouTube’s encoder settings and ingestion guidance.

Choose encoder settings and test the stream

For a conventional SDR stream, YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for H.264 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Use AAC audio when encoding audio. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.

H.264 output YouTube bitrate guidance
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended

These figures come from YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026: YouTube encoder settings. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably; if other devices share the connection, leave headroom rather than targeting its theoretical maximum.

Keep a long-running stream healthy

A 24/7 stream depends on three separate parts: the FFmpeg process reading and encoding the files, the network carrying the output, and YouTube’s broadcast and ingest state. Google’s Live Streaming API documents broadcasts as distinct watchable videos bound to streams, and illustrates a 24/7 feed with another simultaneous broadcast. That establishes that a persistent feed is a supported use case—not that every process or connection will stay uninterrupted. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

For a locally hosted setup, consider these safeguards:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use process supervision or a restart policy so an encoder exit does not go unnoticed.
  • Keep logs and monitor them for encoder errors, file-read failures, and reconnect attempts.
  • Monitor upload capacity and alert on an encoder exit or ingest failure.
  • Check available disk space if source files or logs accumulate on the machine.
  • After a restart, verify the YouTube preview and the playlist position rather than assuming playback resumed cleanly.

These are operational recommendations; they do not guarantee zero gaps or recovery from every failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want an always-on computer and a locally maintained FFmpeg process, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account.
  • Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping, playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.

Copyright and channel eligibility

Before scheduling a long run, make sure you have the rights to stream every video and its audio. A playlist that runs continuously does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or make reused material original. Review the permissions for music, footage, narration, and any third-party clips, and check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and restrictions before going live. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube Wrong endpoint, protocol, path, port, or stream key; TLS hostname/SNI issue Copy the current RTMPS address and key from Live Control Room. Confirm the client uses RTMPS over port 443 and the correct hostname/SNI.
Stream connects but YouTube reports poor health Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the selected bitrate Reduce the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain reliably, and monitor stream health during a test.
Picture is sideways, cropped, or padded unexpectedly Output dimensions or framing do not match the intended portrait layout Confirm the encoded frame is portrait, then check the crop/fit/layout choice in the preview and keep essential content inside frame.
Playback stops or breaks at a file boundary Clip properties differ or the multi-file playlist is not feeding one continuous output correctly Align or normalize codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio layouts; test every transition rather than assuming a single-input loop handles a queue.
Audio drops or changes between clips Audio streams differ or the transition workflow does not preserve continuous output Check audio layouts across source files and test transitions in the actual encoder workflow before using it on a public broadcast.
Live stream ends after the local process exits The encoder process, machine, or network stopped sending Check logs and local supervision, then verify the broadcast state and preview after restarting. A restart policy alone does not ensure a seamless return.
