OBS Dropped Frames During a YouTube Video Loop: Is Disk Read Speed the Cause?

OBS streaming dropped frames usually indicate a connection problem, not a proven disk-speed fault. Check the precise OBS counter first, then investigate network, performance, or local media activity.

Usually, OBS’s streaming dropped frames counter points to the connection between OBS and YouTube—not directly to disk read speed. First check which OBS statistic is rising, then investigate network, rendering or encoding load, and local media storage as separate possibilities. A looping video can be a local file in OBS or a YouTube video being watched or captured; those setups need different troubleshooting.

First identify what “YouTube video loop” means

There are two different situations behind this phrase. You might be streaming an OBS scene to YouTube while a local video file loops in the scene, or you might be watching a YouTube video that is buffering. You could also be capturing a browser playing YouTube in OBS. A viewer’s buffering and OBS’s stream statistics are not the same symptom.

  • Local file in OBS: A Media Source can play a video file with its Loop option enabled. A VLC Video source can play a playlist with Loop Playlist enabled. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
  • YouTube playback in a browser or app: If you are only watching and the video buffers, troubleshoot YouTube playback rather than an OBS stream counter.
  • OBS sending a production to YouTube: Use OBS Stats and its log to determine whether the reported problem is streaming drops, rendering lag, or encoding lag.

What OBS means by dropped frames

The OBS Project defines streaming dropped frames as a connection problem between the computer and the remote ingest server: the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. That makes the network path and bitrate the first checks when OBS’s Dropped Frames statistic increases. It does not prove the disk is at fault—or, by itself, identify the exact network cause. Follow the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

Rendering lag and encoding lag are different indicators. They point toward the work required to compose and encode the scene, such as GPU load, output resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity. Use the OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide for those symptoms instead of treating every kind of lag as a network drop.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the counter to choose the right diagnostic path

  1. Open OBS Stats and the current log. Reproduce the issue and note exactly which counter changes. Do not record rendering or encoding lag as “dropped frames.”
  2. If streaming dropped frames rise, check the network path. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps, including whether the connection can reliably support the bitrate you selected. Do not buy a faster drive on the basis of this counter alone.
  3. If rendering or encoding lag rises, investigate system workload. Check GPU and encoder load, scene complexity, output resolution, and frame rate. Try the relevant performance guidance from OBS before changing storage.
  4. If the scene has a local looping source and symptoms suggest a source stall, examine disk activity. Note whether other disk-heavy processes are running and whether the issue coincides with their activity. Compare the same file under controlled conditions—for example, with background disk-heavy work stopped or with the file on a different drive.
  5. If YouTube playback buffers in a browser or app, troubleshoot playback separately. YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting guide covers viewer-side connection, quality, app or browser, and device checks. It does not diagnose OBS’s streaming dropped-frame counter.

When disk read speed is worth investigating

A local file and competing disk activity can be a useful lead when the problem appears to track source playback. An OBS Studio project issue describes a specific test in which other disk use coincided with increased Media Source CPU use: Media Source CPU usage increases if other processes are also using Disk resources (issue test updated 2020-09-09). That report is one case, not proof that a slow drive causes this symptom generally, and it does not establish that switching to an SSD will fix your setup.

Before considering a storage upgrade, check whether the file’s location and competing disk activity correlate with the problem. If tests do not implicate the source or storage, return to the OBS counter that actually changes. If storage is confirmed as a constraint, check your computer’s supported drive interface and the capacity you need before choosing hardware; the OBS documentation does not specify a compatible drive for an unknown system.

What details help narrow down the cause

If the symptom persists, keep a concise record while reproducing it. The title alone does not establish a cause; useful case details include:

  • OBS version and operating system.
  • The exact Stats counter that increases and any relevant log message.
  • Whether the source is a local file, a VLC playlist, or browser capture.
  • The video’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, if known.
  • Where the file is stored and whether other processes are using that drive.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your actual goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, rather than diagnose an OBS project, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed.
