How to Stream Prerecorded Retail Product Comparison Videos on YouTube Live

Yes. You can play a prepared retail product comparison video during a YouTube Live broadcast by sending it through an encoder-based setup. YouTube lists encoders as one way to stream, but does not prescribe a special prerecorded-video workflow. Before going live, confirm your channel is eligible, clear the rights to every part of the video, and add your own useful analysis rather than relying on a simple replay of retailer or manufacturer footage.

What you need to check before streaming

  • Your channel must be verified, live streaming must be available to it, and it must have had no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance and its live-stream restriction information for current status and details.
  • Have a finished video file or a composed program ready to send. An encoder is a practical choice for a prepared file, not a special method YouTube requires for prerecorded material.
  • Review rights for the narration, product footage and photos, logos, music, sound effects, and any clips supplied by retailers, manufacturers, or other creators.
  • Decide whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private, whether to archive it, and how you will monitor it while it is live.

YouTube lists four broad streaming methods: mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. For a prepared comparison video, the encoder route is the one that naturally fits feeding a file or assembled program into a broadcast. You do not need to buy a particular camera, capture device, microphone, computer, or encoder solely because you are streaming a prerecorded comparison; the right setup depends on whether you want overlays, live commentary, switching, or just playback.

Prepare a comparison that adds original value

Build the comparison around your own criteria

State what is being compared and why the criteria matter. For example, explain the differences in features, usability, compatibility, or intended use that you can substantiate from your own review and the products’ documented specifications. Show viewers what evidence supports each point, distinguish personal assessment from manufacturer claims, and make limitations clear. A prerecorded format can still feel like a live event if you introduce the comparison, invite viewers to discuss specific questions in chat, and respond with original commentary where practical.

Do not treat permission as a monetization guarantee

Copyright clearance and YouTube Partner Program eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and treats reused content separately from copyright enforcement: permission alone does not establish that reused material qualifies for monetization. The policy says examples such as critical reviews using clips or edited footage with commentary may be allowed, but that is not a guarantee for any specific stream. A replay of product ads, retailer videos, or manufacturer footage with little substantive change can raise reused-content concerns even if you have permission. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies; its July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible, while YouTube said its reused-content policy did not change.

Set up and start the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream. Choose the encoder option for the prepared video or composed program. YouTube’s getting-started page describes the available methods; it does not specify a dedicated prerecorded-video mode.
  2. Configure the broadcast details. Give it an accurate title and description, select the intended audience and visibility, and decide whether to archive it. These are production choices; check the current Studio interface because labels and available settings can change.
  3. Connect the encoder. Follow the current on-screen instructions in Studio to obtain or select the stream key and connect your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a signal to your stream. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or encoder setting for every creator, so use settings supported by your source, connection, and encoder rather than treating an unsupported number as a YouTube rule.
  4. Run a test where your setup allows it. Use a private or unlisted test broadcast if you can, and confirm that playback, audio, overlays, and transitions behave as intended. Check Studio for signal or policy warnings before switching to the intended audience.
  5. Start the stream and monitor it. Keep Studio and your encoder status visible. Watch for interruptions, warnings, muted or missing audio, and chat questions that need a response. If the signal stops, use the dashboard’s status information to diagnose the encoder or connection before restarting.
  6. Review the archive and any claims afterward. If you archive the stream, check the finished replay and Studio notifications. A Content ID claim can arrive after an archived live stream ends.

Clear rights for every element, including music

You are responsible for having the necessary rights to the live content, including music. YouTube scans active live streams for matches to third-party content; a match may cause a placeholder image to replace the stream, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. If you have a license for third-party material, do not assume it will automatically prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and its copyright guidance for live streams.

  • Use music and sound effects you created, licensed for this use, or otherwise have the right to use in a live stream.
  • Check that a license covers the actual use, platform, territory, and relevant live and archived formats. When terms are unclear, ask the rights holder before broadcasting.
  • Check product images and video clips individually. Permission to use one retailer’s footage does not clear a soundtrack, logo treatment, or other material embedded in it.
  • Keep records of licenses and permissions where appropriate, but remember that documentation does not itself prevent automated matching or a live interruption.

Disclose paid or gifted product coverage

If a brand influences the livestream in exchange for something of value—including payment, a free product, or sponsorship—YouTube’s branded-content policy applies to live streams. Declare the paid promotion in Studio and make the relationship clear and prominent to viewers. YouTube’s platform instructions do not replace any separate advertising or disclosure obligations that may apply in your jurisdiction. See YouTube’s branded-content policy and its guidance on paid product placements and endorsements.

Troubleshoot common problems

You cannot start a live stream

Check channel verification, whether live streaming is enabled, the account’s live-stream status, and whether any restriction applies. YouTube’s stated eligibility guidance includes a restriction-free period of 90 days and a minimum age of 16; consult the current eligibility page rather than assuming an older setup still applies.

The stream is interrupted or replaced with a placeholder

Check Studio for a copyright notice and identify the matched material. Remove or replace material you cannot use, or resolve the rights issue with the owner. If the material is licensed, confirm whether the owner must allowlist your channel through Content ID; a license alone may not stop live matching.

The broadcast stops or playback is unreliable

Check the encoder’s connection and Studio’s stream status. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended source and that your connection can sustain the chosen output. The cited YouTube pages do not prescribe one bitrate or resolution for every setup, so diagnose against the capabilities of your equipment and encoder.

The replay receives a claim after the broadcast

Review the archived video and the claim details in Studio. YouTube notes that archived live streams can receive Content ID claims after completion; address the identified material through the available Studio process or with the relevant rights holder.

You have permission but are concerned about monetization

Assess the stream against YouTube’s reused-content guidance independently of copyright permission. Add substantial original explanation, comparison, and context; permission by itself does not decide monetization eligibility.
