To stream a movie on your PS5, open the Media home, choose All Apps, download a supported streaming app, then sign in and press Play on a movie. You do not need a PlayStation Plus subscription for ordinary services such as Netflix or Disney+, but each service may require its own account or paid plan. App availability varies by country.
What you need
- A PS5 connected to a TV or monitor using an HDMI cable from the console’s HDMI OUT port.
- An internet connection and a PlayStation Network account.
- The streaming service’s app and, where required, its own account or subscription.
Keep the PS5 system software and streaming app up to date. Sony’s PS5 setup and support page covers the console’s HDMI connection. Services, catalogs, and app availability can vary by region.
Install a streaming app and start a movie
- From the PS5 home screen, switch to the Media home.
- Select All Apps.
- Choose a supported app, such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, YouTube, or Crunchyroll, and select Download.
- Open the app and sign in using its instructions. Some services let you activate the console with a code or QR code.
- Browse or search for a movie, select it, then choose Play.
Recently used apps appear in the Media home; Sony says that area shows up to 14 recent apps. If yours is missing from that row, check App Library. App menus and playback controls—including subtitles, audio tracks, and seeking—vary by service. Sony’s streaming-service instructions explain the console workflow and note regional availability.

Sony’s U.S. entertainment page lists services including Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube, Crunchyroll, and ESPN, along with other entertainment options. Check the app store on your console for what is currently available in your country; Sony’s PS5 entertainment page is a useful U.S.-focused reference.

An app’s availability does not mean its movies are free. A title may be included in a subscription, offered only to rent or buy, or unavailable in your region. The PS5 is the playback device, not a universal movie subscription. PlayStation Plus is not required just to use the usual third-party streaming apps.
Can the PS5 stream movies in 4K?
Yes, when the full setup supports it: the PS5, display, HDMI path, app, specific title, subscription tier (if the service limits 4K by plan), and network connection must all be suitable. A 4K TV alone does not guarantee that a stream will play in 4K; services may also lower quality when the connection is unstable.
Check the console’s output at Settings > Screen and Video. Sony’s 4K resolution guide explains the dependencies and settings. For picture problems, confirm the TV is on the right HDMI input and try connecting the PS5 directly to the TV rather than through a receiver, switch, or capture device.

Streaming, casting, USB, and discs are different
Using a phone or computer
The straightforward, officially documented method is to install and use the service’s app on the PS5. Do not assume the console works as a general Chromecast- or AirPlay-style receiver. If you want to watch a movie on the TV, open the service directly on the PS5; streaming the PS5’s display to another device with Remote Play is a different use case.
Playing a movie file from USB
The PS5 can play some video files from a USB drive, but this is local playback, not streaming. Sony’s procedure is to create a folder in the drive’s root, place the video file in it, connect the drive, then open Media Gallery from the games home, choose USB, and select the file.

The maximum listed video resolution is 3840 × 2160. Media Gallery will not play copyright-protected files, and some files distributed online may have additional playback restrictions. USB playback is not a way to bypass DRM or download protections. See Sony’s disc and USB media instructions for details.

Playing a disc
A disc-equipped PS5 supports Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. A Digital Edition without a compatible disc drive cannot play movie discs. Drive support depends on the model: Sony distinguishes the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition from later Digital Edition model groups that may support the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. Check your console model and Sony’s disc compatibility guidance before buying a drive.

The app does not appear
- Look in All Apps and App Library, not only the recent-app row.
- Make sure you are in the Media home rather than looking only in the games home.
- Install pending PS5 system software updates.
- Check whether the service offers a PS5 app in your country and still supports it; regional availability can change.
The app will not open, sign in, or play
- Check PlayStation Network status and the streaming provider’s own service status.
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the PS5.
- Test the internet connection; restart the router or try another network if practical.
- Update the PS5 and app, then sign out and back in.
- If the issue continues, reinstall the app. If only one service fails while others work, contact that provider’s support.
For activation-code or QR-code sign-in, follow the instructions displayed by that app; activation steps are not identical across services.
The picture is blurry or stuck at a low resolution
First check whether that title is offered in HD, 4K, or HDR and whether your service plan includes the desired quality. Then check the PS5 output under Settings > Screen and Video, the TV’s input and settings, and the stability of your connection. Try a different HDMI cable or port, or connect directly to the TV to isolate equipment in the signal path. The service, title, plan, network, and display all affect the result; a 4K television by itself is not enough.

There is no sound
- Confirm the TV is on the PS5’s HDMI input and check the TV, soundbar, receiver, or headphones for mute and volume.
- On the PS5, review Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Try connecting the console directly to the TV to identify a receiver or soundbar issue.
- If other apps have sound, check whether the problem is limited to one app or title.
Sony documents the audio settings and general display checks on its PS5 support page.
A movie is unavailable even though I subscribe
The title may have left the service, be available only as a rental or purchase, be restricted in your region, or require a different plan or profile. Check the service’s listing for that title before treating it as a console problem; streaming catalogs change.

No. The DualSense controller can navigate streaming apps and control playback. Sony’s optional PS5 Media Remote adds dedicated Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, and YouTube buttons, playback controls, and—on compatible TVs—power and volume controls. Its TV controls depend on hardware and settings, and some features may require a system software update. It does not add services or improve picture quality.

A remote may be convenient if the PS5 is a main living-room media device and a game controller feels awkward. Skip it if you watch only occasionally, already have a suitable TV remote, or usually use the TV’s own apps. A separate streaming box is similarly optional: consider one if you want a dedicated, lower-power device or a platform feature the PS5 lacks. If you already own a PS5 and its apps meet your needs, no additional hardware purchase is necessary.
PS5 app or smart-TV app?
Use the PS5 when it is already on and the service app works well there. A TV app may be simpler for other household members, avoids turning on the console, and uses the television’s remote. Neither option is automatically better: app support, speed, picture features, and convenience depend on the particular TV and household.
