1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stream an Icecast radio station on YouTube Live, use an encoder or relay to read the station’s listener-facing mountpoint and send its audio to YouTube’s ingest server using a YouTube stream URL and stream key. Icecast hosts and relays the station feed to listeners; it does not, by itself, send that feed to YouTube.
How the Icecast-to-YouTube relay works
The connection has two separate sides. On the input side, the relay connects to the Icecast listener URL for the station’s active mountpoint. On the output side, it sends an encoder feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- Icecast input: the station’s host, port, mountpoint path, and stream format. The mountpoint is the unique path listeners use to access a stream; confirm the full listener URL and format with the station operator. Icecast documentation and the Icecast FAQ explain the server and stream setup.
- Relay or encoder: software or a service that can read the incoming codec and produce output YouTube accepts. The Icecast source client that publishes the radio feed and the relay that forwards it to YouTube have different roles.
- YouTube output: YouTube’s ingest server URL plus the stream key for the encoder stream. These credentials are not the Icecast hostname, mountpoint, or source credentials.
What to check before you configure it
Confirm the listener URL and codec
Ask the station operator for the exact listener URL, including the mountpoint path, and the audio format served there. A URL with the wrong mountpoint can fail even if the hostname and port are correct. Verify that the relay can decode the incoming format and can produce an output format YouTube supports.
Check your YouTube channel’s live eligibility
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and that users must be at least 16 years old to live stream. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio, since platform rules and eligibility can change. YouTube live-streaming eligibility

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose where the relay will run
A relay can run on a computer or server you administer, or through a hosted service. Consider whether it supports the Icecast input codec and YouTube output, how you will monitor a long broadcast, whether the relay host has stable outbound bandwidth, and how it handles buffering and credentials. Self-hosting gives you control but means maintaining the machine and network; a hosted option shifts some operations to the provider, whose capabilities and costs you should verify.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream and locate its stream settings. YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance describes this workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both into the relay’s YouTube output settings. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the relay. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS. YouTube provides instructions for revealing and copying the RTMPS address in Live Control Room: YouTube RTMPS guidance.
- Set the audio output. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 Kbps. Use constant bitrate encoding where the encoder exposes that setting, and check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for requirements that apply to your stream.
Connect the Icecast mountpoint to YouTube
- Enter the Icecast listener URL as the relay input. Include the correct host, port, and mountpoint. Do not substitute the source-client publishing address or credentials unless the station operator explicitly tells you those are also required to listen.
- Configure output for YouTube. Select the YouTube server URL, RTMPS where supported, and the stream key copied from Live Control Room.
- Match input and output formats. If the input audio can be passed through in a YouTube-supported format, the encoder may be able to copy it; otherwise configure the encoder to decode and transcode it. The right setting depends on the station’s codec and the relay’s capabilities.
- Decide what viewers will see. A radio audio feed does not inherently provide video. If your YouTube setup requires a visual, configure an appropriate static or moving visual in the encoder; do not assume the Icecast mountpoint supplies one.
- Start the relay and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm the preview is stable and the audio is audible and correct. Follow the Live Control Room workflow to start the broadcast only after the preview checks out. YouTube recommends checking the encoder feed before going live. YouTube encoder-stream guidance
Using FFmpeg: capabilities and limits
FFmpeg documents Icecast-related input options, including mountpoint, password, and content type, as well as RTMP output. Those protocol capabilities do not amount to one command that is guaranteed to work for every station. The required input options depend on the mountpoint and codec; output options depend on whether audio can be copied or must be transcoded, how you provide any visual, and the capabilities of your FFmpeg build. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and test the exact configuration with your stream before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Test, monitor, and troubleshoot
Before going live
- Open the listener URL from the relay machine and confirm it is reachable.
- Confirm the encoder recognizes and can decode the incoming audio format.
- Check that the YouTube output uses the correct destination protocol and server URL, plus the matching stream key.
- Listen to the Live Control Room preview and check any visual output before starting the broadcast.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No Icecast audio reaches the relay | Incorrect host, port, mountpoint, or listener access | Confirm the complete listener URL and that it is reachable from the relay machine; ask the station operator to verify the active mountpoint. |
| The relay connects but cannot decode the input | The input codec is unsupported or misidentified | Confirm the mountpoint’s actual format and use an encoder that can decode it, or configure a suitable transcode. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Wrong output URL, protocol, or stream key | Compare the relay’s destination and key with the current values in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the relay. |
| YouTube receives a feed, but audio is absent or wrong | Input decoding, output codec, or audio settings are mismatched | Check the relay’s input format and output format, then verify the preview’s audio before going live. |
| The preview is not stable | Input reachability, relay-host network, or encoder operation is intermittent | Check the mountpoint connection and relay process, then monitor the preview until the feed is steady. |
| The encoder feed works but the channel cannot go live | The channel is not currently eligible | Review the channel’s live status and eligibility in YouTube Studio. |
Copyright and broadcast rights
Only relay a station’s programming to YouTube if you have the rights or permission needed for that broadcast. A station being publicly listenable on Icecast does not, by itself, establish permission to retransmit its music, programs, or other material on YouTube. Check the rights for the audio and any visual you add, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before launch. You can use this copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight resource.
