To resume a YouTube gaming stream after a brief connection interruption, enable Auto-start in the stream’s YouTube Studio settings and turn on reconnect or retry in your encoder, if it offers that option. These settings do different jobs: Auto-start lets YouTube begin the broadcast when it receives a feed; the encoder must reconnect and send that feed. If the encoder app has crashed or closed, YouTube Auto-start will not relaunch it.
Choose the recovery for the failure you have
First identify what stopped. A dropped network or ingest connection may be recoverable if the encoder is still running and retries its connection. If the encoder application or device stopped, its reconnect setting may not be able to help; the process itself needs to be restarted, or a backup encoder needs to take over.

YouTube’s guidance describes Auto-start and a primary/backup encoder failover test, but does not establish a universal reconnect control, recovery time, or guarantee that every interruption preserves the same live event or watch page. Confirm behavior with your encoder and test the full setup before relying on it.
Enable YouTube Auto-start and encoder retry
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Go Live, then select an existing stream or create one. In its stream settings, enable Auto-start. YouTube explains that when Auto-start and Auto-stop are on, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder; Auto-start does not restart that encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Confirm the encoder’s connection details. Enter the YouTube server URL and the correct stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover these details: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enable retry in the encoder, if available. Look in the encoder’s connection or streaming settings for reconnect or retry controls. Their names and behavior vary; the YouTube instructions do not prescribe one setting for all third-party encoders. Check your encoder’s current documentation and confirm its behavior in a test.
- Test privately or as unlisted. Start the encoder and verify that YouTube receives the feed and starts the broadcast as expected. Simulate the kind of interruption you are trying to recover from, then check whether the encoder reconnects and whether the broadcast resumes. YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health and messages; see its live streaming tips.
- Monitor the stream during the event. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages, and check that the encoder remains connected after a disruption. YouTube recommends choosing quality appropriate to your connection and checking upload speed; its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance covers stream quality and health.
When the encoder itself stops
If the encoder process exits, an in-process retry option generally cannot restart that process. You will need a separate mechanism to relaunch it, or a separately configured backup encoder. This is a technical distinction between restarting a running connection and restarting the application; it is not a YouTube Auto-start function.

For a redundant setup, YouTube describes testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that playback rolls over to the backup. That test is meaningful only when a backup encoder path is configured; it does not show that a single encoder will restart itself. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips and test the backup before depending on it.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not come back
- YouTube does not start when the feed returns: Confirm that Auto-start is enabled for the selected stream and that the encoder is actually sending a feed. Auto-start cannot create a feed or relaunch a stopped encoder. Review Manage live stream settings.
- The encoder reports a startup or authentication error: Check the server URL and stream key, and refresh the key if necessary. Update the encoder with the current key. If your software signs in directly instead of using a stream key, YouTube directs you to the software provider for help. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- The encoder stays disconnected after a network interruption: Confirm that retry is enabled and check the encoder’s documentation for its specific behavior. YouTube’s Auto-start option does not provide a universal encoder reconnect setting.
- The app closed or the device shut down: Check whether the encoder process is still running. If it is not, arrange a separate process restart or use a tested backup encoder; Auto-start alone cannot bring the app back.
- Connections keep dropping: Check upload speed, choose stream quality appropriate to the available connection, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. A wired connection may be one network setup option, but Ethernet alone does not restart an encoder or guarantee a stable stream.
- Power loss caused the interruption: Power continuity equipment such as a UPS is relevant only if power loss is the diagnosed cause. It does not relaunch streaming software.
