How to Stream a YouTube Playlist Continuously on a Raspberry Pi with FFmpeg

FFmpeg can sequence compatible resources, but its documentation does not establish a YouTube playlist page as a supported input. Separate viewing from rebroadcasting before choosing a Raspberry Pi workflow.

Short answer: FFmpeg’s concat features can sequence compatible media resources, but the official FFmpeg documentation does not establish a YouTube playlist page as a supported FFmpeg input. If you want to watch a playlist on a Raspberry Pi, use YouTube’s player. If you want to rebroadcast videos as a live stream, first confirm you have the rights and that your method respects YouTube’s rules; for authorized local files, FFmpeg can sequence resources separately from YouTube playback.

First decide what “stream a YouTube playlist” means

There are two different jobs behind the phrase “How to stream a YouTube playlist continuously with FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi”:

  • Watch a YouTube playlist on Raspberry Pi: YouTube plays the playlist for viewing on the Pi.
  • Rebroadcast a YouTube playlist with FFmpeg: FFmpeg takes audiovisual content as input and sends another stream somewhere else.

The first uses YouTube’s player experience. The second raises separate rights, platform-policy, input-compatibility, and output-configuration questions. The documentation discussed here does not provide a supported direct-input recipe for a YouTube playlist URL, nor does it establish a tested Raspberry Pi configuration.

To watch a playlist on Raspberry Pi, use YouTube’s player

If your goal is simply to watch videos, open YouTube through a supported player route available on your Pi and play the playlist there. This keeps playback within YouTube rather than attempting to make FFmpeg extract or retransmit the playlist’s audiovisual content. The exact route depends on your Pi model, operating system, display setup, and available browser or player; no particular combination has been tested or established here.

Offline viewing is not a general playlist-export method

YouTube Help describes offline viewing through the YouTube app for eligible accounts and locations. Downloaded videos are stored encrypted and watched only in the YouTube app. YouTube Help also describes downloading videos you uploaded through YouTube Studio; that creator download facility does not cover other users’ videos. YouTube Help states: “Note: You can’t download other users’ YouTube videos.” This statement is about the creator download facility, not a universal legal ruling on every independent software use.

Why there is no reliable YouTube-playlist-to-FFmpeg command here

FFmpeg documents concat for reading multiple resources in sequence as if they were one resource, and concatf for reading a line-delimited resource list. Its example uses ffplay concatf:split.txt with local MPEG files. Those features explain how compatible resources can be sequenced; they do not show that a YouTube playlist page, or the changing stream resources behind it, is a supported input to either protocol.

For the same reason, a command that extracts URLs from a YouTube playlist and passes them to FFmpeg would go beyond the documented workflow. It could depend on undocumented behavior, fail as resources change, or conflict with applicable rights or platform rules. This article does not present such a command as a dependable method.

Before rebroadcasting, check rights and YouTube policy

Rebroadcasting is not the same as watching. Make sure you have permission to use the videos and any included music, narration, footage, or other protected material in the new stream. Owning or curating a playlist does not by itself establish permission to retransmit every video in it.

YouTube’s Developer Policies apply to API clients and include restrictions concerning copying audiovisual content without prior written approval, offline playback, playback integrity, and altering player functionality. These are policies for YouTube API Services, not a universal legal opinion about every FFmpeg workflow. Read them in the context of the tools and method you plan to use, and do not treat the existence of a technical workaround as proof that a rebroadcast is authorized.

Use FFmpeg concat with authorized local media

If you have local media files that you are authorized to use, FFmpeg’s documented file access and sequencing features provide a distinct workflow. This is not a way to turn a YouTube playlist into local media; it assumes you already have permissible files available on the Pi or an accessible filesystem.

  1. Confirm the files and permissions. Keep the source files in a location the FFmpeg process can read, and verify that you are entitled to play or retransmit them for your intended purpose.
  2. Check compatibility. The concat protocol works with compatible resources. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes sequencing, but does not establish a universal set of formats or a tested Pi-specific configuration for every collection of files.
  3. Follow the documented local-resource pattern. FFmpeg’s example uses ffplay concatf:split.txt, where the text file contains a line-delimited list of local MPEG resources. Consult the documentation for the syntax and compatibility requirements that match your files and installed FFmpeg build.
  4. Keep playback separate from live output. Playing a sequence locally is not, by itself, a complete configuration for sending a live stream to YouTube or another destination. The reviewed documentation does not establish an end-to-end output recipe, required encoding settings, or Raspberry Pi performance for that job.

FFmpeg’s general documentation includes long-duration network-output options, but that alone does not establish a reliable YouTube-playlist input or a complete, tested configuration for continuous rebroadcasting from a Pi.

What this means for Raspberry Pi setup and troubleshooting

No Pi model, operating system, FFmpeg build, account configuration, or performance level is established for this workflow. The right setup depends first on whether you mean viewing or rebroadcasting, and then on your hardware and authorized source material.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • A YouTube playlist URL fails as FFmpeg input: the documented concat protocols do not establish playlist pages as supported inputs. Use YouTube’s player for viewing, or work from authorized local resources for FFmpeg sequencing.
  • The playlist plays in YouTube but not as a rebroadcast: those are different workflows. A player playlist does not automatically supply compatible FFmpeg inputs or permission to produce another stream.
  • Local files do not sequence correctly: check the file paths, list formatting, and whether the resources meet FFmpeg’s concat compatibility requirements; consult the protocol documentation for the relevant protocol and format.
  • A local sequence works but no live stream appears: local playback does not configure a network output. The sources cited here do not establish a complete live-output setup, so do not assume a playback command is sufficient.

Because no Raspberry Pi setup was tested, there is no evidence-based model recommendation, performance estimate, or universal fix for Pi-specific playback failures.
